Nisi- Glad you and Kat will be joining us!
I'd like either Big Mama or Big beef tomato.
Let’s Swap some plants! Ric & Holly’s
Ruby, I hope you're watching this thread, too! (I'm trying to keep my requests etc. here rather than on the "lists" thread)
I'd love some Jacob Cline Mondarda, please!
Hi Nisi - nice to see another Jersey DG member. I drive through Bordentown weekly on my way to New Brunswick :) it looks like you have lots of garden goodies.
Ruby if you are checking here too, I'd like to try your Best Beau daylily please. Is your Marionette the yellow one with the skinny petals? If it is, I would love to try that also. I cracked up at your description of the cow sneaking thru the fence...your too funny...and I read your note about the sweet autumn clematis. I'll still see if I can get you more. It is just now starting to grow. I've never tried to root it before, so I'm not sure how it will go.
Wind-If you are successful at rooting that clem I'll take one next year when you try again ^_^
How much of the Bee Balm would you like to have Critter? I have loads and loads of new starts this year. My story with the Jacob Cline Monarda is really quite wacky. For at least three years I have planted it and always lost it, or actually it never grew for me. I will bet you that I could go outside in our front yard right now and find at least 5 labels with the name on it and not a single plant to be seen.
For about two years I watched a lone plant in one of my backyard beds struggle to live. I couldn't decide if it was a weed or a plant, so I just let it grow. Last summer it grew to about three feet tall and began blooming and I realized that it was the Jacob Cline Monarda. My goodness, I did NOT plant it there. The bed that this grew in and which this year has hundreds of baby Clines growing is a bed where a couple of years ago I was wearing a gardening apron and at least one packet of seeds spilled. The spilled seeds were the Black Barlow Columbine, so that little area is thick as can be with the BB Columbines. The only thing that I can figure is that when the Columbine spilled, there must have also been some Bee Balm seeds somewhere in the apron that fell out too. So very strange.
Do you still want the Stella D'Oro and the Prarie Moonlight that he had for you when we were planning on seeing you last fall and the visit was canceled? Let me know please.
Wind, the cow didn't need to sneak in through the fence. The Clematis was growing on the fence in hopes of it being as prolific as your was. All he had to sneak through the fence was his big teeth. John tells me yes, that the Marionette has smaller leaves than some of the others. So, we will bring it and also bring along the laptop to show you a picture that was taken last year. If you don't care for it, someone else will take it hopefully.
Does anyone have Bleeding Hearts that they would consider swapping me something for? A mole, a vole, a chipmunk or a squirrel got mine again this year. I have planted the Bleeding Hearts several times in my front yard also and it keeps getting eaten. I am hoping that since the Monarda lived in the back yard, maybe by planting the Bleeding Heart in the back that the pest from the front won't travel as far for nourishment.
I must admit that I spit out a few choice words the other day when I saw the Bleeding Heart was gone again and saw evidence of something small that had a throw the mulch every where party. Daggone!!!! It was my turn to curse the country animals. John had fits two summers ago after working so hard in planting over 600 Day Lilies and he would go out to check them and all that was left was a very healthy stem.
Enough about us, see you folks soon.
Ruby
Wind, don't worry too much about trying to root the Clematis for me. I know that your time is precious. Maybe mine will grow enough that I can share with Jen, if I can possibly get some rooted. No pressure from me please.
Shoot, a good portion of my garden came from you last year anyway.
Ruby
I'm going to hack my 'Sweet Autumn' clematis way back and give it one more chance to be a better citizen. It's a thug, and it's doing its best to take over my side garden. If hacking doesn't help, then there will be a big 'Sweet Autumn' plant up for grabs this fall or next spring!
Ruby, if it's a big chunk, I can plant the monarda right out at the edge of the orchard; if it's just a few seedlings, I'll keep them potted this summer... so anything that works for you will work for me! Yes please, on the 'Moonlight' DL, and I can always use another clump of my favorite 'Happy Returns', but I don't need 'Stella', unless it's 'Black-eyed Stella', which I'd like to try. Thanks!
Nisi, I'd love to try a 'Summerlong' basil, and I can always find room for a few more strawberries, if you've got more than have been spoken for (but give them first to anybody who might be strawberry-less!).
You folks are so generous I get all confused with the possibilities. I'm just going to play potty arm with whatever I might use with no special plans. By that time I willl pretty well know if I have any space left to play in.
I would like a grafted Northern Pineapple. :)
Sure thing, Doc! You can trade me for some of your Chocolate Basil...
Would you like semi-sweet or bitter Chocolate Basil? I am all out of the sweet variety.
Semi-sweet for me, please!
(OK, if anybody is wondering if we are for real, there are threads in the Herb Forum about searching for Chocolate Basil. It may not be quite as mythical as the Pineapple Doc is after, but... )
I posted another new Swap Chat thread
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/979020/
Hope 3 threads isn't too many, this one has gone over the 200 mark so I thought it was time to extend this discussion to another thread. What great swaps you are all making. Happy Swapping!
When you get a chance, maybe you could post links to other threads at the top of the main swap thread, in case we lose anybody along the way...
I like having 2 threads for plant swapping... with this many people, I think it helps to have a "lists" thread and a "requests/chat" thread.
This is fun! THANKS, Holly!
I agree with Critter, this if fun. Yippies.......I get to play in the dirt.
Critter, when I was out looking at back yarden yesterday, it looked to be about 50 of the Bee Balm starting. Some are already about six inches tall and there are also oodles and oodles of those that are only up about an inch or so. You tell me which and how many you prefer.
Oops, off to new thread.
Ruby, I'll take whatever is easiest to dig up. With the little seedlings, it might be easier to transport a clump of them in a container, maybe something like the bottom of a milk jug left from winter sowing. Bigger ones might be sturdy enough in 2 weeks that you could just put a bunch together with wet paper towel & a plastic bag around their roots, and I'll pot them up or plant them out afterwards. I've got a couple of areas where they could go...
I'll try to dig up a bit of lavender bee balm before I come, also... it looks like it's coming up well this year... will see if I have lemon balm to bring, also. Most of my prep will be done the day before I come, so I'll be flying around the yard LOL.
Critter - I would like to request some of the lemon and lavender Bee Balm from you if you have enough to share. Yes, we had thought of your idea too about digging a clump of the BB and just divide it up while at swap. Let people choose their own.
This great weather that we are having is so wonderful. I love days when I can have both windows and doors open. It is almost like being outside. John just finished mowing the back yard and it is looking so good. I just love the pops of color from the Tulips, Azaleas, Lilacs and Iris that are there.
I don't think that I have ever been as ready for spring as I have been this year. It was not my favorite winter by any means. The thought of Florida just crossed my mind. hahaha Nah, not something that I would do at this stage of the game though. Well, snow birding might be nice. It is times like this that I wished I would have purchased some property down there in order to spend the winters. Spending the summer there is another thing though.
Oh well, I can just about guarantee you that twenty years from now, I will still be living in my hill side retreat. And....that is alright with me.
Thanks for your ideas Critter.
Ruby
