Let’s Swap some plants! Ric & Holly’s

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Critter, Tomatoes!!! I didn't want to start tomato seeds but would love to have some small ones. I really like the grape rather than the cherry and I also like the small yellow. But will try anything you have extra. Last year I only had two of them in pots on the patio. JR ate almost every one. He would come over and pick everyone that was ripe and eat them right off the vine. You would have thought they were gumdrops.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Holly, I can definitely slide some tomato seedlings your way... Oddly enough, I only got 1 grape tomato seedling from the row I sowed, but I've got plenty of gold (Sungold or Dr. Carolyn) and black (Black Cherry or Chocolate Cherry) and red currant (Wild Cherry) ones. Stupice (red) & Jaune Flamme (gold-orange) are saladette rather than cherry sized, but they're early bearing for me & very productive. Do you want a "slicer" or two also?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

If you have them, please.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

See my list (near the top of this thread) and let me know what varieties you'd like... :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Here is a photo of the invasive, spreading Sedum that I was asking about a while back.
I could dig/scoop these up and put them in flats or pots if anyone wanted this plant.

I do not know the name of it, but it will regrow from a single touch of the stem to the earth or a fallen piece.
My neighbor has it ALL over--and, even though I have tried to eradicate it in my one corner bed--it still came back and is thriving....

Here is a picture of it.....Let me know if you want any.

Gitagal...........I bought one of those Sedum at Lowe'e last year to use as a fall in a large planter. Chip and Dale like it. They packed it away like nuts. I see it popping up here and there. Round Up will take it out if it gets to bad. I ran a test last summer when I began to see what was going on. Where they hid it was under the edges of our rather large mountain laurel which is OK. I mow right up to the laurel. If I extend the bark mulch I believe the Sedum will grow like a ground cover. If the Chip and Dale thing is a regular issue I may want to get rid of it befor it gets to going like crazy. I have an eye on it for sure. As a humorous note there was a "you may not probagate tag on the plant". Don't they know Chip and Dale do not read very well? :) mercy :)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I have tons of that sedum, too. Pretty in the spring with the bright yellow flowers. Very easy to weed out so I don't worry too much about it taking over. When we did the stone walls last year I gave a lot away but finally just started to compost it. It's coming back nicely this year. This pic was from last year when it flowered.

Just got to read through and catching up with the swapping!

I have many things started via wintersowing and also underlights...more later, when I can get a better feel of what will be most available.

I do have seedlings of Cornus mas, or cornelian cherry. It has edible fruit, yet I have never eaten it myself. My birds just love it! It has yellow flowers before the forsynthia blooms.
Request list:
1) sallyg

LadyGardener, I have a deep purple Siberian iris, if you would like some of that.

ClayPa, I would really appreciate some of your buckets, as I love to use them in the garden for many things.

Critter: I would love a few of your tomatoes, if you have enough. Some of the varieties really sound interesting! If enough, I would love to try your Chocolate Cherry, either of your yellow cherries (your choice), a Black pear and a German STrawberry Oxheart? Last year, I tried a few heirlooms and loved them! Never knew so many existed! Only if you have enough, I would also love to try a few varieties of your scented geranium.

Would another thread be helpful to post just the items for swap? I was thinking of how Starlight set up the Piggy Seed Swap this past winter. Just a suggestion, if it would help.
Can't wait to meet so many of you in person!
More later...
LuAnne or RatherB

It might be helpful if attendees are willing to clean up and copy/paste their entries to a newcondensed thread.

Rather B--I could sure enjoy a Cornelian cherry seedling.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

The swap lists are getting lost in this thread. Too much chatter.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I figure this thread will be long enough soon that we'll need a new thread anyway... at that point, I'm sure Holly will start another one where we can be better organized! :-)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Started a new thread for swaps. Let the swapping continue.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

But can we try not to fill it up with side comments? It does get to be a chore and distraction. We can dmail specific requests, can't we?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

For me, it's a lot easier to keep track of requests if they're on a thread rather than scattered in DMails (yes, I know, I should make a Dmail folder for them.. but somehow some always seem to get missed). What if we try to keep just 1 post per person (edited as needed) for the new swap thread, but keep chatting here to make requests etc. When this thread gets too long, we can start a new thread for swap chatting.

I think we're going to have a pretty big group for this swap, so trying to limit chat and requests on the main swap thread does make sense.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Sounds good. I'll make that suggestion on the other link. I'll start another thread for chatting and requests shortly. Sounds like you are all in Swap mode. LOL

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Lots of luck...........ROFLMAO

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

YEAH! I echo that...doc!
There are just some things that are hard to regulate......

Holly---This is YOUR Swap--you do what you like.....I, for one, do not mind scrolling up or down--helps me remember what i have already forgotten....;o)

AHHH--Old age!!!! Gotta love it!!!!

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

These thread rules could be a good example as to why governments can only govern those that are willing to be governed.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Regulated, unregulated, it all ends up working out at these sort of events... I'm not worrying about it! Just having a new thread when the old one starts getting long gives us a fresh starting point.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Easy Peasy, I can go with the flow anytime. Just enjoy your swapping. LOL

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

Jill, did I see some where you had Blue Basil, if you do I would like some.

Everyone, I just potted up my Hardy Red geraniums NOID got the seeds in a Round Robin and they germinated better then I expected. Since I don't know anything about the plant, I will need to find homes for at least 5, (the one that I feel will be nice plants) Just raise your hands if you are up to a NOID geranium.

Akron, PA(Zone 6b)

Sallyg:
I would be happy to save a Cornelian Cherry for you.

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

RatherBD, I saw your note about buckets and will save you some.

Sallyg, to answer your question about holes in the metal tags, they can be drilled easily with a regular drill and bits. The trick is securing them while they're drilled, because they're small. Easy - peasy.

And Gita, I cut them with large straight tin snips, similar to these:

http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/productImages/300/3d/3d764d2d-2655-488f-9f68-5b921115e3b4_300.jpg

Again, if anyone has size/shape/hole placement requests for steel plant tags, please speak up and I will be happy to make whatever I can for you, no worries about trades. I will make some for the size Critter mentioned, and whatever else comes to mind unless I get more specific ideas. So, just holler.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

LuAnne, if you have any extra Cornelian Cherries, I would love a seedling.

I've updated my list upthread a couple of times as I've been noticing what's coming up in the yard. If anyone sees anything they want, please let me know.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I updated my list on the other thread a little... hopefully more to come after a weekend of happy puttering around the yard! Found a few extras among my overwintered winter sown seedlings from last year...

I think I have an extra double white lilac from Hart (unlabeled, but I think I know it)... I know I talked to somebody about it, but can't remember if it was Terri (aspenhill) or Chantell or maybe Miata... nudge me! There may even be 2 shoots in that pot that could be separated. :-)

Crooked willow cuttings seem to all be striking roots. :-)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

RatherB- thank you, how fun!

I may be editing my swap post al allong too, as maybe most of us will. But I may not drag every living thing if nobody has expressed interest.

claypa- I'd be tickled to have a few that I could put a hole in and hang from a shrub or tree maybe...like say 1 by 4 to write on with a paint pen, I'd be happy to choose from whatever variety you come up with and make my holes, I don't have anything particular in mind.. or if you get sick of it give me some scraps and maybe my dad will make them for me--the retired engineer wants to make and do things all the time, sigh...tough when you can hardly see.
I tried to use juice can lids but found that they rusted.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

It would be nice to have some tags with a hole at one end that I could put the 5660 labels on... maybe we can work a trade for a ceramic 2-piece self watering planter (big one, 8 inches across, too big for most African violets but I'm betting great for ferns, gingers, etc.) or a pound of moisture crystals... :-)

Oooh, RatherBDigging, I'd love to have a little Cornus mas, please, if you've got enough to go around. I nibbled some of those fruits at a friend's in NC a couple years ago, and they were delicious!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Ack, just realized that my updated list is in the *other* thread. Oops! Well, it's somewhere at least.

Sally, has anyone claimed your lychee yet?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Anybody who's gotten a plant from me knows how much I love polymer moisture crystals...

I just restocked from the recent co-op, but for anybody who missed this co-op or who is wishing they'd ordered more (I keep giving my supply away to friends & family), Tammie just posted a classifieds ad for us...

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/977217/

Given the time and effort she puts into packing & shipping these, I think the price she's charging is extremely reasonable, just slightly more than the rate on this co-op! I appreciate the gift of time she's given to our community with these crystal co-ops and now with this other offer.

If you price a 12 oz jar of crystals at your local garden center or box store, you'll realize what a deal you can get through her... better than the price at Watersorb.com, which was previously the best price I'd found.

I thought this might be a useful place to mention this, because the savings are even better if you fill a big box (shipping), so people might want to split an order at Holly's swap.

:-)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

is pretty smart.... bought mine already

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Kubileya- the lychee is yours and it has a new leaf, seems to know spring is here.
It's in the 'Stacys " pot here but you can hardly see it tho. It has a couple more leaves now

Critter, That is a good idea about the water crystals. I would not be interested as I have quite a good size bag of them left over from one of her co-ops last year. Her co-op price was great in comparison too what I had been paying. I would highly recommend them for pots and window boxes, especially if your anything like me. A bit lax in the watering.

There was some talk about getting coir delivered for the swap, sometime ago. It keeps slipping my mine, but I was wondering if anyone was still interested and if anyone knew a good place to order it. If I get a chance I will check local sources.

If anyone thinks they are interested in either go ahead and start a thread and add the links here to the swap thread.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I have a few friends and family members coming to the swap. They would be looking to do a little swapping so don't hesitate to bring some plants that haven't been spoken for. My DIL in particular will take just about anything that is left over. They have about 2 acres of field to fill in. LOL

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I would be interested in coir if it can get to this swap. I don't know much about which kinds or brands are best, so I would help someone who knew more about what to research.

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Coir is tricky to find. Price levels are tricky. The demand is low except where it has been promoted. The good news is that coir is great stuff and takes several years to decompose. Water considerations are similar but not as good as crystals. Crystals however have no nutrient value unless the water is a form of tea added in the soak. I have started to work with the crystals but can not compair them for lack of time in my experience. Problem is I think some of both may be better than all of either.

I am looking for someone's comment as to how many crystals in a wheel barrel sized potting soil mix. I am aware they should be water soaked or tea soaked in process prior to potting. If I add a light tea like fish/kelp the crystals if they can absorb a tea would be an advantage in the early season for a week or so. I shall do this and see what happens. A fact not discussed much is the fact that if they are full of water...added water just runs around or through the potting medium and none can be absorbed if the crystals are fully loaded. They are an intrestring recent addition to potting mediums. Medium shrink in the pots is a factor if they are fully loaded when potting just as medium expansion is a fact if they are not loaded when potting. Expansion considerations are not an issue when not using crystals.

Bordentown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I was introducing my 19-year-old daughter Katherine (Kat) to the DG site and explaining that there are sometimes gatherings of regional gardeners (roundups?). She was immediately interested and found this site. Then she started typing our trade list, and I came back and said "wait--we haven't been invited yet!" So, I am first asking....

May we please attend this swap?
