Good shots Dyanes....

Thomaston, CT

Very nice shots, Dyane! Haven't seen much in the way of migrants--have to head to Bantam Lake--CT's largest natural lake, & not too far from me---lots of unusual ducks show up about now.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree with everyone, nice pics Dyane!!

Rockport, ME(Zone 5b)

Haunting the bird feeder...I'm afraid that's what my feeder is, essentially a catered buffet for the hawks and probably the neighborhood cats. But I just can't bear to not put seed out.

There's little let up in the snow right now, but more on the way. The birds are ravenous!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Odd how they know when to eat and when to lay low.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

we had another grackle invasion today.... amazing how many travel together... looked like the ground was moving

Grackles have been here all winter.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I tried to get a picture of them all.. but they got spooked away when I opened the window

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

They flock thru here in the fall and early spring, thats a sign we have grubs in the lawn when they flock and aireate the soil.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

they were eating something out in the woods.... don't know what could be active out there.. the ground is pretty solid

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

maybe some late dropped berries, doubt there are insects this time of year.
We get them in the lawns in late april and early may when the ground is thawed.
They travel with Cowbirds and RedWing black birds.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

we saw another bird with them.. will have to go look those two up

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

doesn't look like either of those... it had a yellow beak

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Might be a Immature grackle.
There are also Boat Tailed grackles but the yellow beak I,m not sure of.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

got a photo of them yesterday... at least the tree rats keep the grackles out of the feeder...

:)

Randy had to go save a grackle this morning.. he got his foot caught in the feeder... funny how they sit still when they know they are getting help

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

those black birds w/ yellow beaks are Starlings.
Guess they are dufferent from Grackles I dont really know as they all hang out together.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

love the birds I watch them everyday at my house so many come to visit its amazing
bought this house for the 2.5 acres of mostly woodland, so we would be able to watch nature at is best

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

nice pic's allison - better titmouse pic than i posted on the weather thread - the poor birds shoulders were covered in snow though

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

thanks... he looked cold that's for sure

Thomaston, CT

Your bird shots are always nice, Allison. You mentioned a stuck grackle---we had a bird whose head got stuck in the feeder---he didn't make it---was pretty deteriorated by the time we found him---anyway---I retired that feeder for good. Two days ago we had a flock of 4 bluebirds on top of the nearby dam, & I saw a pileated WP flying over the impoundment area. Today the siskins that are left are hogging the feeder space.

We got about 1-2" and its not snowing as of now.

that's terrible... I only saw one pileated here... he landed on my gutter of the house... I was out weeding and he scared the life out of me... what a racket it made

Why did I put that in this thread!!!!!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

does it really matter???

I thought it was in the weather. You know the The Pomp and Circumstance. Well I just renamed it to The Pomp and Ninnystance...

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I agree. Makes me like this gray day. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Who named them anyway??

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

duck, crow, blue bird were already taken

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Who named the birds? Adam

"Where did it get such a funny name?
Titmouse means small little bird. Tit is an old English word meaning little. And mase meant any small bird, such as a chickadee. About 500 years ago, the word titmase morphed into titmouse. It probably happened because the small, active birds remind people of mice, and everyone knew the word mouse. " quoted from birdwatching.com

That is a great titmouse shot, they are adorable.
