DAILY PICS VOL. 185

Renton, WA

part 4 -- the end.
The hummers were happy and one took up residence under it most of the day..--
for a good stretch of a week till we things returned to the wonderful dreary rain
we enjoy.
But we were entertained with a great show..... one of many pictures of this guy.

OMG Dirt, that was so funny. Pelle said exactly what I was thinking before I even saw her post. Too funny. Thanks for sharing. You're such a good hummie host!

Today I found another place where the Great Blue Herons are nesting. These nest are in an area that is a lot more open and should allow better pics of the young as they grow. The other sites I have found are all thick with trees and difficult to photograph.

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

In all the other nesting sites the Great Egrets also nest. In this one so far all I saw were the Great Blues. I spotted a dozen nest today. All were occupied by the herons.

There used to be a heron rookery on Rte. 2 going west. They had to make it illegal to stop & watch them because of the traffic. The drowned trees are still there, but no herons. I don't know why they left.

pelletory and Mrs. Ed: Thankyou. I do care about the hummers and enjoy all the rest.
Great pic burn_2007.

That's what will make one bird special...when there's a story to go with it... Love it dirt!

Wow Frank, I thought they would be on the ground.Learned something new today!!

I am seeing fewer and fewer Juncos at the feeders this week. Funny we love/hate to see them arrive in the fall. But we so hate to see them go at the end of winter!

Edited because I can't seem to spell today!! lol

NEW BIRD ALERT!!!!!!!

Male Wood Duck!!

Can you imagine?.....

If birds are dinosaurs closest living relative, and are direct descendants of dinosaurs, why do museums always seem to show them as mud colored or green?

I seem to always ask myself that when I see a male wood duck.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

WOW on the Heron photo!! I had no idea either how they nested. Nice to know that!

Love the wood duck, so interesting looking!

Beautiful shot Rose!!! Your news gets me excited!

Congrats nanny!

Very nice pics all!

That's a beautiful Towhee dellrose!!

Hi all, just thought I'd share this from Journey North newsletter. It confirms Rose's post above!

Quoting:

Forget the groundhog; the birds have been saying spring is on its way! Robins and cardinals have been singing here in Tennessee for several weeks, and the bluebirds have started checking out nest boxes. The most exciting sign, however, was seeing the first Purple Martin of the year on Monday! Martins and swallows are the first migrants to return in the spring, so it’s a sign that spring migration will soon be here!

I know my cardinals were at it this morning. MAN was THAT a welcome sound.

Fayette, IA(Zone 4b)

Spring's got to be coming! I glanced out the window last Friday and saw this robin. Grabbed the camera to be my witness.

With my camera still in hand I blinked in disbelief to see this guy fly in for a drink. It's early for robins, unheard of (at least by me) for a bluebird. I wonder where he's on his way to?

Thumbnail by MartyJo
Fayette, IA(Zone 4b)

Then in the afternoon, the small birds were nowhere to be seen. I wonder why? I'm thinking he's a sharpshinned - is that right?

Love all the pics on this thread!

Looks like one to me MJ!

We recently found out that my Chickadee's are actually Carolina Chickadee's.
It should be interesting to see if I can remember to call them by the correct name now. :-)

Next time I visit the Blue Herons I will back up the lense and get a shot from the swamp surface up to the nest so you can see how high they are. I have never seen a nest less than 12 feet high. Most are higher. All I have ever seen were in trees surrounded by water. At the other two nest sites the the Great Egrets and Anhinga also nest. I am watching to see if any of those two nest here later.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks Pelle and Luv!

MJ.. Nice ones! The Robin's and Bluebirds winter here but the Bluebirds have been checking out all the nestboxes and they are doing a lot of wing-waving and chattering. The Robin's have increased in numbers in the past few weeks and are now every where we go and there are dozens and dozens at a time. I also noticed that the Red-winged Blackbirds are starting to make their call also. Eastern Phoebe's have been spotted about a hundred miles s/w of us.

I am really getting antsy...here is a Robin from the other day.

Cute one Pelle...I still haven't gotten a shot of the Dee's!

Last year I had Goldfinch till April. I have not seen any for two weeks now. The Juncos have been gone since mid January. I think spring will be a lot earlier. Yesterday I saw Gadwalls breeding.

Great shot Rose!

Lovely Bluebird MJ!

Thanks for that news Frank!

We don't seem to have as many Junco's either but we still have lots of Goldfinch.

Cool shot Frank!

The Dickcissel is still here and is starting to get his breeding colors I think...also his black bib. What gal wouldn't love this handsome fella?

One of the best signs of spring is that the gators are out.
