I so enjoy lurking or soaring along on this forum and seeing all your bird photos. Not much happening in my yard except my pair of red tails are showing off today rather nicely in "their" tree across the road from my bedroom window. The winter gang are still at the feeders, and a few new robins showing up. I saw one bird go into an unused birdhouse that I put up too late last spring. Hopeful sign. Couldn't id it. But the bunch are really starting to sing. Yippee. Patti

My red tailed hawks have decided that my yard is a prime hunting zone. They have been circling high up above the house for the last few weeks riding the updrafts from this hill. I'm throwing seed under the group of dogwoods now so that the songbirds can get their food in a more protected place. I haven't seen the 2 squirrel families for 4 days now. They were always the first at the feeders in the morning and didn't leave until 8am or so. As I guess that they are the ones that have brought ticks into the yard, I wouldn't be sad to not see them here again.

South Hamilton, MA

Any deer mice or white footed mice that are around are known as tick carriers, I suppose squirrels would if the ticks can get at them while the sq. are on the ground.

Gardenpom, I had a female cardinal last year that either did not have legs or they were severely deformed. I admired her courage but I haven't seen her in several months.

Dirt, I think I had a hawk hit my window this a.m. I was getting ready for work and heard this loud "Bang"! I thought to myself that if that was a bird it was a bigun! I went to the back door and opened it expecting to see a bird lying on the ground but instead I saw a hawk flying off. I guess it had attempted to catch one of my little birdies and overshot it and hit the house instead. It must have been that juvie sharp-shinned I've seen lurking around lately.

Melbourne, FL

Yes, she has a left leg, Iris....its' her right that's missing.

Mrs_Ed:

Here's my story on it.
It all started around Christmas and the dog gone dang cold snowy weather we normally see on TV ( I live near Seattle) or drive up in the mountains and play in.
There was parts on me freezing that never happened before and around that time it got to be in the mid teens. I didn't like it and the little
hummers were complaining that all they got were popsicles to lick. So I thought of a great idea, I took off my old wore out wool socks and cut
the toe off and pulled it over the glass container and wrapped stripped sheet linen under and around the plastic bottom. It worked somewhat but
it was downright ugly. So I was decorating the tree when I came across the sturdy tinsel wrapping and used red plastic normally saved for tomatoes and
viola! a christmasy masterpiece. Now I aint the decorating persuasion, I gotta admit in the first Anna pic, the hummer and the feeder are color coordinated.
continued ......
(you can see the difference during that time-- the normal rainy day (we love it) and the windy city type stuff you get).

part 2--
it needed decorating so in honor of my three sisters I added some decorating,
My one sister, the crazy one, she collects dolls. well not really , she only collects doll heads.
and it looked like this and the hummers would check out the bulbs till it blew away in a big
wind storm a couple of weeks later.
continued.....

part 3
the feeder worked sortof, still froze up while I was away,
so idea #2-- others did it--- I added heat.
Took an old office lamp, hung it upside down, covered in foil and hung the feeder over it or on it--
and it worked keeping the feeder from freezing and the hummer was happy.
continued......

ROTFLOL OMG That's hysterical (the doll heads)!!! Thanks for making me laugh hard dirt!

Very unique !

Your a wonderful person to go to so much trouble for the hummers!

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Like all the Hawks pictures, and the Junco and buntings are so sweet, cute face on the peek a boo Cardinal. So many to comment on, but very nice.

The Downy Woodpecker made an appearance today, haven't seen him, in quite some time.
