She's About To.........#43

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Happ, those are the pregnant onion plants. They multiply fast. I had one once before, don't know what ever happened to it. I don't remember the names of all of them, but the cactus one you mentiioned AuntB does look strange to me but I'm willing to try and make it grow. Monday was a busy day for me so didn't get out to pot them up, have to get out there now.

Put my corn beef and cabbage in the crock pot so now it is play time. If this keeps up I will have a jungle out there. Hoping I have some to share next round up, if I manage to make it. At my age I don't make too many plans far in advance. ^_^

Well, gosh, it IS the middle of March.. Arnolds usually have a season opener sale of 10% off or something.. usually the first part of April... I can't really afford much, but I'll treat myself to a little something. You know you ALWAYS find one or two you can't possibly live without...right? We could all hook up at Beto Junction on Hwy 75.. Stromgrens is in Osage City, which is further south of Beto but still on your way home, but by mid April they should have some nice looking begonias and coleus for a reasonable price.. they usually have nice sweet potato vine for cheaper than Lowe's too.. I wish you girls would call me, you're working and I'm livin' the "easy" life right now..(ha) I can pretty much talk anytime... you're on schedules and I don't want to interrupt you.
It was a glorious summery 82 degrees this afternoon.. Mel and I were trimming spirea and she got a bee sting on her big toe (working in flip flops).. got her in the house and used meat tenderizer mixed to a paste with water, applied and allowed to dry... she's as good as new.. Joyce sorry you were stuck inside today. Pregnant onion plants kind of remind me of Ponytail palms... are they the same thing? (just overturned a small tray of planted ponytail seeds-grrr) Karen, you still planting things outside, down there? Jeanne, hope you see this..... my biggest egg tree seedling (3-4 inches) just kind of toppled over and is wilting away.. any ideas? too wet?

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Bonnie, sorry to hear your egg tree seedling is wilting. It may be too cold. They don't like temps below 50° really. They also don't like direct afternoon sun. If it is too much water, try putting one tsp of 3%Hydrogen peroxide into a gallon of water. Then water again. This will put oxygen back into the soil for the roots. I learned this little trick from a fellow DGer who has never had root rot in the winter using the mix. You can do that with all your plants in the winter when overwatering is a problem. Start out with the tsp per gal, then slowly over one months time increase to 2 1/2 tsp per gallon. I did that this winter everytine I watered and the plants loved it. If none of that helps, then I have no idea. Sorry.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Evening everyone, I had a great day off.. cleaned out the back gardens, got 6 contractor bags full, gonna use them in my compost pile I started.. still have about 20 more leaf bags to get up( I blanket my gardens with them during winter)
My dogwood is budding away! I haven't put it in the ground yet so I am leaving it in the tub a little longer, went into wichita to see my GS and my two DDs' for get together Tuesday and we went to visit Don ( tropicman) he has been getting things ready to get into the yard again, his tub of blue silk is big and beautiful and vining like crazy no blooms yet but he will have a ton from the two seeds in that tub..
I will drive to meet up with you guys when ever you are ready.. let me know..
are we still going to an RU? Don thinks we should have one here in wichita, and I have the room for it at work called the green zone we could use.. seats about 60 and lots of tables and stuff..
glad you are all still here and doing well.. Bonnie if you want coleus and i.batatas, I have tons of them..

Hey Debra, looks like you have some nice stuff growing! I am the worst at starting seeds.. bad a dampening off!

My local hockey team was just in Wichita playing your team on saturday night! We won! I never miss a home game if I can make it! Go Jacks!

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Good morning loved ones! I have been very busy planting my vegetables out this week. Whew, what a job! I know I will be well rewarded with good food though....It's so nice to be outside working and getting the muscles a little sore! Hubby doesn't want me too sore though, after being so sick, so he's hiring two Mexican men to work for me on Monday from early morning until dark, to do anything I want done here in the yard. Woo hoo! He spoils me when he can. I've got alot of tree limbs to cut down and there is no way I will be reduced to something as mundane as chopping wood when I've got better things to do, like plant flowers and paint birdhouses!!!

I've got bougainvilleas coming thanks to my sweet sisters here and look forward to planting them out and giving them a try. Love you ladies, and hope you are having a great day!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Good Morning ladies'. Debra! Look at those seedling trays!! I'll d-mail you about the RU's. Jeanne, thank you so much for sharing that little H202 secret..I might save a couple other plants, too! I'll consider then, too, the 4 egg tree babies had been moved to more fluorescent light which put them in a bit of direct afternoon sun from a small west window.. Pegi, I've never heard of a lilac vine.. please.. tell me more about it.. you don't mean wisteria? Karen so glad you are getting help..Yay for your DH! It's just great to have you back in the garden and feeling so much better! I've chopped wood before, but not in the last 10 years.. too hard on my ol bod.. but I'm a good limb drag-er.. Joyce, meant to reply the epi in the basket has lots of new growth, but no buds or blooms, yet. My other ones bloom in summer time.. maybe this one does, too. I want to keep them in the backyard, dappled shade and repot them in better medium this year. Sunny and pleasant this a.m.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Can I plant devil trumpet, and angel trumpet in the same garden area?

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Bonnie, send me your phone number in an email and I will call you.
April 4th I am busy.
Otherwise I am open.
May 2 is our master gardeners plant sale (really good prices)
May 9 is the Midwest RU (hope you all are going)
May 16 told a friend I would go to a Coke swap meet
Then sometime in May I need to work in the yard.....LOL

Love coleus, ordered some in a coop this year (hope they come out good), overwintered a few that actually made it, and plan on getting more. Sweet potatoe vines are so darn expensive! Love to find some at reasonable price. I kept the potatoes from mine last year and need to get them potted up and see how they do.

Debra that sounds like a wonderful place for an RU.

Debra do you work outside of the home? Bonnie can you go during the week? If you guys can go thru the week and since the 10% is only that week, I could take a day of vacation. Theresa didn't really want to go to Arnolds, but was going to go so I would go to WatersEdge with her. I can go with her on another weekend just to WatersEdge which is what she wanted to do anyway.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Bonnie, my seeds are all showing signs of life. I am so excited. The morning glory came up and it got about 3 inches high and fell over. I am not sure why. They had water. maybe the heat got to them before I got out there. I am hoping they will come back. I am so anxious to see what I actually get from these things. I love surprises like this. Some of the Brug seeds are up two inches. I feel like Jack in the bean stalk. LOL
Working on hibiscus cuttings and more P.prince rupert cuttings. The other ones are growing like little weeds. I put up some of my plants in my ebay store and am having some action but nothing to get too excited about. I want to put some up on this Market Place but it takes so much time and they are so cheap it is almost not worth it. I do not have that many at this time either. Have a good day you lovely ladies. JB

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Have no idea what other name is used for pregnant onion. I'm no good at remembering names of plants, need a crash course in learning. LOL I had a mother of thousands or as I heard it called, a maternity plant, and believe me I had thousands of those plants.

Hot weather in Kansas already so it may be nice when I go to Minnesota next month. I didn't know if I would still have to pack cold weather clothes or not. Waiting to come back on the 18th of April to sow seeds, hubby is not a good baby sitter. I expect him to take care of the doggies and don't let them die. LOL

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Pegi, April in the midwest can especially north can be snow to warm, you need to pack everything! We have had 17 degrees in April in Missouri and we are not as way north as you are going.....I have gone to Oskosh WI, in July and froze or suffocated....we have it all.......sometimes 3 seasons in the same day.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

AuntB - all is well, the droopy morning glory has recovered. It needed more water. Sometimes the medium I use looks wet and is not really. I need to watch that more closely. Now that the heat in the greenhouse is so difficult to control. I took more cuttings from my P. prince rupert again today. I am going to soak them overnight and put them in soil tomorrow.
Karen, I absolutely love Boco Bob's coir...I just ordered 12 more blocks. I got the small blocks because it is perfect for my one big bucket and that way I do not make up more than I need at a time. I planted seeds in the seed starter and they came up in less than one week. I could not believe it. It is tricky to keep it sitting in water and not letting it dry out. I have to remind myself to do that. Thanks again for introducing me to it.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

My egg tree seeds are up. I was looking to see what the plant will look like. It seems according to DG info there are two different ones. Fried egg tree and scrambled. Now I ask you, AuntB, are we fried or scrambled?

Here are my baby P.prince ruperts. Their little heads are growing. First try and I am so happy they all lived. They were planted in those pots after a night in water on February 16th.

Someone please answer Linda Kay's question about planting devil's trumpet with brugs. I was thinking of doing the exact same thing.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

well... I already have devils trumpets planted in the same pots of the brugs.. so there I go.... going with no direction! LOL

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Well, I am going to go ahead, and plant them in the same area. Several of you have come through, and said they have them together, so I am going to give it a try!

LK

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

well i figure.. short with tall.. good root coverage keep em cool.. eh?

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

you betcha. I'm planting them together too.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Guess I'll play it by ear about what clothes I should take. I'm sure if it is freezing my sister will have a warm jacket to wear. Just so I don't have to wade around in the snow.

DH finally finished my grow light and brought it into my office. Talk about being crowded. Have to do some moving around.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Pegi, I agree take both kinds of clothes.. I am in Kansas and was wearing a teeshirt yesterday and a turtleneck today to go to work in.. Bleah

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

LK the only thing I see that may be a problem is that I hear the Devils Trumpets reseed themselves really fast and spread
Some say they can become invasive....especially in your zone...
So if you want to keep them under control and contained I'd dead head some of the flowers so they don't produce too many seeds...

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

oh thats easy.. I have been growing devils trumpets for years and have managed to control them.. dead heading and pod picking is a favorite pastime for me.. I like to make things out of dried pods LOL

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

And you are so good at making things....
All your stuff Flowers and Crafts are absolutely gorgeous... : )

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Good point Phyllis. I will dead head. I have to dead head some of my clems anyway. Maybe save one pod for the seeds.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I do save the seeds for trading also. Debra, show us what you make from the pods please?
Good night everyone.

Boy, did those pictures get large, guess I better find out what I did. LOL

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

This is what Gordo said on the brug thread!

Careful...
Daturas can develop nasty, brown spots and virus. They also don't like wet feet - while Brugs like a lot of water.

Now I am really confused!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

ut ohhs LOL well, my moonflower daturas seem happy when wet.. but I have no clue about these ornamental tempremental ones LOL ;X.. your plant station looks great! I love it! YAY!

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Linda Kay, Gordo may be right on this. I noticed today my dat was wilting and it's soil was wetter than everybody elses. The first thing I thought was, too much water. I'm hoping it will be alright. Either that or it's too much sun and it never minded the sun before. So I think I will pass on planting the dat with the brug. The brugs do love water.

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone.
Happy first day of Spring!

LK

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I got all my plants moved out of the atrium and potting shed yesterday and ready to welcome spring! Yea...most got a shower to wash off the spider mites too! some of my older brugs have been out a few days.. have already dumped their top winter leaves and are starting to grow new spring leaves.. that direct sun just baked those thin weak leaves.. they turned white the first day and wilted away! I just told the plants they are going to have to put out something a little sturdier for our southern sun.

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm on dial up. You all know what that means. We dial up folks need a new thread. This one is taking too long to down load. I know, I know, wha wha wha.

Tammie, I keep telling my brugs to give me two more weeks in the pots then I'll put them in the ground. They are dying to spread their legs. But we could have one more frost. Although Farmers Almanac calls for Apr 1-3 to be the last cool down. So I'll probably put them in the ground right after that.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I have one hundred percent germination on all my brug Star Dancer crosses.. YAY!

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Yippee for Debra. Congrats on the new babies.
