Wonderful pics burn! I love your winter birds!

Nice shot of the Chickadee in the greenery!

Wow, I've been away too long. The pics on this thread are fabulous.
Bebop, what a stunning start. The pic of the white-breasted nuthatch is superb!
Pelle, you added some gorgeous photos.
Angele, I'm so impressed that you were able to get the ruby crown to show on your pic of the kinglet. Wow!
Great pics everyone! Burn, that evening grosbeak is so pretty!

This Yellow-rumped Warbler was hanging out right over my head - serious neck pain! I took about 15 shots, and he's headless in all but three! This is probably the best one. I just loaded it and it looks like I should have cropped more. Too bad!

One more b/c the warbler is in the sun and it's an interesting pose.

Very nice Elphaba!

Crazybirdlady - I have goldfinches year-round, & this past week I thought it was
my imagination, but I thought I saw one with some bright yellow spots, but it flew
off real quick. We haven't had a bad winter here, but I am soooo ready for spring. I thought I was just jumping the gun. Does it seem kinda early, tho?

Burn - the Evening Grosbeaks only come in the morning, huh? Go firgure!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, I wasn't even going to look out there again b/c I have other things to do, but then this Ruby-crowned Kinglet drew me back out. I didn't get a good shot of him, but these cowbirds looked pretty.

They both looked like males to me, so I wasn't sure why one of them started doing a dance for the other one, but I don't judge.

Here a few pics I took of some Cedar waxwings in my back yard this weekend,,,,,,,they are migrating back north,,,,,I have heard the the red on the tips of the wings is a by -product of the sap they eat and their body gets rid of it in that manner,,,,,In this one picture you can see that it might be a wax -like substance,,,,Can someone tell me if that is true,,,,,,,,,,I love looking at everyone's bird pics, thx for sharing,,,,,,Roy

On this one you can almost see that it is candle wax-like on the tips of the wings,,,,,,

LOL Elphaba (not judging)! Both males; very nice pics!

Blytheville, AR(Zone 7a)

Thx Pelletory,,,,,,,,can you tell me how to tell the difference in the males and female wax wings,,,

Marlton, NJ

Hi Roy, Here at Cornell they say the sexes are nearly alike.

I'll do some more looking around.

Marlton, NJ

I don't see anything in the 2 books I've checked so far.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Those waxwing pictures are just stunning! I've never seen those red tips so clearly.

2V.......We seldom see Cedar Waxwings here, but have lotsa Bohemian. If you look closely at the yellow on the tips of their tails, the males yellow coloration is much brighter than the females.

Mount Pleasant Mills, PA(Zone 5a)

Wonderful pictures everyone. I never saw the red on the wingtips of the Waxwings before! I really enjoy looking at everyone's photos. They are all great!

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Not sure if it applies to Cedar Waxwings, but with Bohemian Waxwings, these differences help:

Male: Yellow on tail slightly broader; black throat with solid edge; 6-8 red waxy tips
Female: Yellow on tail slightly narrower; black throat with diffuse edge; 5-7 red waxy tips

Resin

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

So interesting to see those red wing tips up close 2V!

Marlton, NJ

Sibleys doesn't say anything Resin? I checked my 2 other books but they do not say there is any differences between sexes.

Nice pics GW and Adel!

Thx for all the comments and research people,,,,,Resin&Pelletory,,,I appreciate you taking the time to do that,,,The 2V

Howdy, 2v. I'm an Arky, too. Love your pics of the Cedar Waxwings! They are one of my favorite birds but they only tease me by staying around for brief periods and then flying off just as I get my camera! :[

I was able to sneak up on this Fox Sparrow as he scratchin' away in the leaves. He is not as skittish as the other sparrows.

I heard this Pine Warbler just a warbling away this afternoon. He was singing so prettily. The picture is not great. He just wouldn't be still! :))

I love to move my feeders around. I guess it's liking moving furniture around. LOL
Anyway, I moved this platform feeder up to a tree branch. It wasn't long before the Red-bellied found it. I think I may have to trim some twigs though.
