Garden Photos of '09......#4

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

I do however have to be careful what evergreens I get. this Chamaecyparis has not fared winters too well, so I moved it to a new spot, and that isn't working either. not sure where to try next - if it makes it.

evie_beevie wonderful shot of the snow with reflections!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree! If you hadn't of told me that was snow in that first picture, I would have sworn it was water! I'm still not sure about it!! lol. So far, I think your tree will be ok. Chamaecyparis thyroides 'Red Star' is one that i've seen do very well at my sister place in Zone 5, but it is hardy to zone 4. It has tolerated being under snow for stretches of at least a month. .

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

evie i wrap some of mine with burlap not so much for wind burn - it is to keep the snow from damaging them - i've lost some branches with heavy snow fall.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Gorgeous first shot, Eve. Really like it. Please don't talk about the deer. Finally walked around a bit today to survey some of the damage. There are piles of deer crap almost every step. I sprayed and threw some Milorganite out. I'm going to have to do three or four things together this year.

Here is a beautiful Cryptomeria I planted last year. Most of the foliage is gone.

Here is the tree that 'deer walk right by' - Thuja 'Green Giant'.

On a positive note, here is my snowdrop, getting all the attention!

my dark green arborvitae are looking like your giant green, victor.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My arborvitae are completely gone. I was planning on removing them.

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

isn't it early for a snowdrop?? of course you're two (1.5?) zones warmer, so maybe that's it. ugh, this is the tough part of the year for being zone 4

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

O that is bad {{{{Victor}}}}

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Normal for me at this location. Still early in other parts of the garden.

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

so you think the arbs aren't salvageable? if not, there goes two hedges. or try to plant in front of them to cover the bottom halves.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I can limb them up, but don't want to. They are not in danger of dying - just real ugly.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Evie we have the same shiny snow here. I love your pic, it does look a lot like water, even has the ripples. You found the perfect angle for your shot.
Victor your snow drop pics does give me encouragement that something will be popping out soon. The deer have left all of my western aborvitae alone here as well. The eastern ones are a fav of bambi and friends and I was not at all sure the selling point for the western varieties was all together truthful but so far so good. The other eastern variety always get that nice wedge cut from deer browsing. I have been lucky so far here as well that the deer seem to be staying close to the tree line and only visit the bird feeder area so far. I think the icy hard snow might have as much to do with it as anything. I hope you tree recovers and try everything to discourage those four legged trimming machines from dining out at your expense. I will soon be chasing them away myself as well as every other trick in the book.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good luck, Pat. We are just so overrun with them now. With times being as tough as they are, they should be hunting them and feeding people.

Here is a cellphone camera shot of the Hudson from before.

I was just going to say something to that affect Victor. Gotta hunting buddy who would love to stock up for the winter? If you're within city limits.... surely someone is a bow hunter!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Very nice Victor. I like the blue sky. I was hoping for some of that here today but it is even more grey and drab than it was earlier. Oh well there is always hope for tomorrow. Nice puffy clouds too.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

What kind of cell phone do you have Victor? That's a great pic for a cell!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks. It's a Sony Ericsson Z750A. 2 Mpixel camera!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

O I thought you would have a Tweeter 123.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

ahhh.... cool! The two mpix makes perfect sense then.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I may change the shutter sound to a tweet.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

My DH's plays 'You're Cheatin' Heart' no matter what he does with it. (Picture me rolling my eyes).

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

lol

I just got a new phone, but I go for best range out in the middle of no where anyhow and that's it. Never a "stylish" phone for me!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What provider gives the best coverage in the middle of nowhere? I have At&T.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

The phone makes a difference. My DH gets a new top of the line cell from work every year and my little analog 'Murder Phone' always kicked his butt for reception in the mountains. Sigh that was a good little phone considering I don't like cell phones.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Here... it's Verizon, Cingular (now with At&T) is a close second. In fact they are the only two in which your phone will actually ring down in the town I'm nearest two. However, I use a phone with "tri-mode" (analong and digital capabitiy), for the farther out areas.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Dahlia... I agree completely!!! you wouldn't believe the looks that i get when I go into the cell phone place, needing to get a new phone, but with tri-mode. They all look at me as if i'm an idiot and say.... "oh.... that's not even necessary anymore, all of the towers now are digital" For which I reply for 1) I know the coverage there, it's where I live. 2) yes your towers are digital.... and analog! I do say it nicely though, that way I can get them to order the phone from a forgotten warehouse in time! LG, is one of the last to make them, so that brand of phone is what i've used for a long time. They can really take a beating too!

They cut me off RC. Told me if I had to get a new phone or no service :(

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

wish the deer would eat the arborvitae in my yard... just another thing from the prior owner... haven't had the heart to tear them out... not too fond of them

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

ahhhh Allison.... Maybe you can go and catch Victors? Release them in your yard.

That's too bad Dahlia! I know that I couldn't get a phone that is just analog, but the tri-mode is feasable. Maybe that's something that you could work out with them? I actually have to research the phones that fit the description online, then take that info of brand (always LG) and model to them. If I don't do that, they will tell me that they can't get the phone. Once I bring them that information, they'll order the phone for me and hook up the service. You can also try ordering the phones from various places online, but i'm always afraid that I won't get a reputable seller. Verizon won't connect any phone from which they can't find and trace the serial numbers on.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Dahlia, this is the phone that I should have went with the last time, the had this one "in-store" but didn't realize the it had analog features... even though it's in the title. I didn't see it until the day I went to pick up the one that I ordered!!

Victor I don't usually post on this forum as I am in Canada but it is the northeast. This is all that is growing in my garden at the moment and it has become extremely invasive.JOY

Hi Joy,

Please feel free to post here anytime - you are always welcome! We have people from different areas post here. Beautiful orchids.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hi, Joy. Yes, please join in the festivites.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

just spoke to my brother and sister inlaw in fredericton and there place is just buried in snow so they must be close to you south of the city about 30 minutes, just off the highway by the river nice place to far for me hahhahahha

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Yep, Shelly, I really would fit in with that kind of job. Who do you work for? Is it a government agency, like the forestry division or some such? Would love to find a job like that around here. It would be nice to have the winters off, though I would have to take some temp work somewhere during the winter.

Nice hellebore shots. I love that purple color, too. Very velvety looking.

Okay, Jo Ann, thanks for clarifying that for me. Thank you, as well, Allison. We pay I think somewhere in the range of $230 for a large truckload, so I'm guessing that's a full cord. It was quite a bit larger than the small pick-up load I got from my friend's son.

Patti, thanks for that detailed explanation of your fencing project and the renovations it went through and such. I'm wondering how many feet of fencing you needed to enclose that half acre?

Welcome, Joy! Love your pic of invasive snow!!!!!

Karen
