Awful pics Vol. 6

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I had about 6 Turkey Vultures soaring over and around the house today. I love watching them. So graceful with minimal effort.

I am standing on our little back deck and the tree is the tree out the back window that my feeders hang on. It was just too close for my zoom to get this big bird in focus I think!!

But it shows the tail pattern very nicely! Red-bellied Wp, if anyone is wondering.

It's so hard to shoot through all that.

I was out for a while today but there was hardly any light. The Tufted Titmouse provided plenty of awful pics!

Stacysmom, I put out a thistle sock - but nothing happened, so you were lucky to get those goldfinches, I just got mildew!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Hee hee staceysmom, It's pretty fun, huh?

Oh Nanny, he had a nice fish too!

Pell, *almost*!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

So there is/are thread(s) that I can also make some contribution of awful pics. lol. Here is one, purple finch and a pine siskin? Or is that a gold finch? Pelle, I'd give anything to get a pix of a titmouse in flight. They're much too fast for me, they came to the feeder, swoop down for the seed and within a split second they're long gone.

Male & Female House Finch, Lily.

There's something for everyone at DG!!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Oh thanks nanny_56, so the purple one is the male?

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

the one in back...probably actually more a red, is the male.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Okay, let's me try again; goldfinch? Thanks once again for helping me with the cute couple above.

Goldfinch on the right & I think you may have a Pine Siskin there on the left. You can post on the Bird Identification Forum too if you want to be sure.

seemama, I have 3 thistle socks out in the yard and have to fill them every 2 weeks. We get lots of finches but boy do they make a mess.
Love those Tufted Titmice...(is it Titmice or Titmouses?) not bad for an action shot.

Lily, both are pine siskins, I believe

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Lily, I agree with Mrs Ed, for Siskens. I lighten it up a bit to make sure. Hope you don't mind me with it.

Thanks everyone, burn, cool we can even lighten the pix. By all means if that helps viewing the picture.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh I think they are right, both PS... plain as day now that it is day!! LOL

sorry I was really tired last night.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Yep, both Pine Siskins, and whatever else there might be hiding behind those fig leaves on the feeder!

Those little birds are quite territorial!!! They litterally will chase other birds, and defend the feeder as if it (feeder) has their names on it. lol. A little further out from my backyard window where the birds made claim of their home. This beautiful big bird comes to fish every morning.

Pelle -
I have 1 of those SquirrelBuster feeders; mine has safflower in it, Do the
titmice eat safflower? What kind of habitat do you need for them? I'd guess
it's a lot like for chickadees, but I only get a few of them in winter. Sure would love
to get more, & the titmice are so cute!

Marlton, NJ

Looks like Great Blue Heron Lily; nice one!

Hi Carol, I haven't used safflower in a long while but I'll find out for you. The Titmice here love peanut halves best and then sunflower chips.

I did have just peanut halves in the one Squirrel Buster Plus but it was getting jammed up so I mixed up sunflower chips into it basically making it a Deck & Patio Mix.

Marlton, NJ

Hi again Carol, I don't see Titmice listed as one who enjoys safflower here at Cornell.

http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/attracting/feeding/seed_types

I live in a regular development so there aren't ton's of trees around but there are some nice old ugly ones that I love just beyond my fence.

Also here it does not say that they need any particular habitat; they just need to know where birds are mobbing for food.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I have mobs of birds, and yet no titmice here in town. boo hoo.

Marlton, NJ

It was a few years before I had them here. Mine usually come when the big birds are gone or when I'm out there.

I remember how excited I was to get them. :-)
