Just for kicks.... this was the end result that day. I ran out of gas, so we came back later and took another round out of the tree.
Garden Photos of '09......#3
Could have made some nice tables with that.
Cool, Anita!
lol, I think it's just me, I haven't met the others yet. Although, it makes perfect sense when you look at the woods here.
Ohhh..... pretty, pretty Anita!!
victor i think we need to do a road trip and do some hiking in those woods
Count me in, Bill.
Keep an eye out for Sasquatch!!
Fantastic tree! Did you count the rings. We had a MUCH smaller pine fall over here a couple of year's ago and it was at least 50 yrs old.
Just foliage on the snowdrops up against the house & I'm sure all are not going to come up. Zone 6a here because of being near the ocean. West of Boston is zone 5. Snow off one bed which is backed up by a four ft rock which came out of the celler when the house was built in the fall of '72.
Those are some nice looking woods...no wonder Sasquatch is happy there! Seriously, do the 'stories' come down that far to you or are they farther north?
LOLOLOL - see...great minds think alike!!!
Your the best RC.What a great job.
Sorry Iris.... but, I didn't count. sometimes we will, but I was aggitated that I ran out of gas and got sidetracked. But, a good guess would be around 315. Doug firs, in width, grow so much faster than many of the others. A pine that size would be at least 500 years, possible much more.
Anita, yep, a few stories trickle down this way every now and then. A couple of years ago, Discovery channel folks filmed and camped out with a bunch of Sasquatch followers, in an area near here, to see if they could prove or dispell any of the stories from that area. It was quite interesting to see the story when it aired.
Thanks Jo Ann!! It's an interesting job. It's really is a great job from may through sept. March/April and Sept-Nov. (winter ending and beginning in the woods), It has the potential to be many things other than great. But, 75% of the time, it can't be beat!!

I believe in Sasquatch. I do believe. I do. I would like working in the old forests but boy o boy that looks like hard work RC.
ohhhh... pretty pretty, I love the heuchera.
Thanks Shelly. The heuchera was just glowing in the late sun. Took it with the macro lens.
I think I need that heuchera.
What's cool about it is that the new foliage emerges that color before turning the caramel color. Then, when it wimps out in the winter, it goes back to that pinkish. That's an old leaf in that shot.
Yep, definitely need that heuchera now!
Dahlia, I'm glad that you believe! It keeps the spirit of the woods alive. Personally, I'm impartial on the topic. And since it's not an aggressive being, I don't worry about it when out there. The only thing that find odd is that: we unearth dead creatures from thousands of years ago to days ago and can identify them or their relative species, but we've never found a sasquatch. However, i'm not going to say that folks haven't seen what they've seen. So, I say maybe, maybe not! If you're ever out this way... I'll take you to where the folks from Discovery were hanging out at.
Bill, I forgot to mention, by the time the final cut was made in that tree there were two more wedges in it. Two on the top for the thousands of lbs. of pressurs on it and a very large, steel, wedge, on the side for the side bind! Most of the time, we'll do without that one. I'm sure glad that we didn't forget it that day.
seeded half a flat of heuchera and the other half with astilbe noting yet
hope they come up soon
I have 'Carmel' and I too think that is one that everyone needs because of its colour changes. 'Winter red' is another that I think everyone should have. It's flower spikes really pow.
I have now in the garden lime ricky and purple night or something want the others but so expensive
Ya they can be pricey. I go for fall sales.
Lime Ricky isn't as bright as I had hoped. Ours is planted near dogtooth violets.
Is lime rickey getting sun? That's why I haven't brought one home yet. I've seen them in both shade and sun. My sunny spot is too sunny, but it would be pretty there. But, I think that my shade would be dark enough that it would be a nice medium green all year! I love dogtooth violets!!! such a graceful plant.
Man - - - they sure are beautiful
After all the tree-cutting talk yesterday - I see that the Discovery Channel has a new show starting next week - American Loggers.
I said I need a helicopter to read this thread. Look up Heli-logging.

Amazing tree! Shelley--be glad of your height---I hate being short, my DH is 6', my son is 6'2", my stepson is 6'3"---I look like I don't belong to the family. Iris, I have lime rickey coral bells---I moved it last summer to a shadier area because it was getting crispy looking where I had it---I put one of the planet series heucheras in it's place--both look better in their new homes.
That photo was from Oct.---don't have any of the lime rickey--it's still snowbound.
The coral bells which we really had to move was 'Palace Purple'. Sun really fried the leaves.
