When I posted the other day about all these ways to communicate these days, it got me to thinking about how many people over 30 actually are using all these things. So pleas answer yes or no to whether you have or use the following 'conveniences':
cell phone
texting
instant message
blog
Facebook
MySpace
Twitter
GPS
satellite radio
broadband - which?
hi def tv
dvr
hi def radio
mp3 player
Here's mine:
Yes - cell phone, occasional text, GPS (Garmin), FIOS, 20" hi-def tv, Satellite radio, mp3, dvr
No - IM, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, hi-def radio, blog
Guess I'm old! What about you?

Which do you own or use??
just how old, Victor??
I'm "behind" many of my friends on this stuff. I try to only do what I have a need for (like we just got an ipod in the last 6 months, while all our friends got one years ago...we're mid-30s so this stuff is pretty common for our age).
yes - cell phone (rarely), instant message (only for work, otherwise rarely), Facebook, cable internet, hi def TV
no - texting, blog, MySpace (I have a page but never go there), Twitter, GPS, satellite radio (though used to when lived in DC), hi def radio (ok, I admit I didn't know this existed!)
I now have a cell phone (for emergency use only), a GPS that I can't live without, a regular TV with cable and DSL through my phone company. I don't Facebook, Myspace or Twitter but Wallingford has a blog. I bought a USB turntable to put my vinyls on MP3s but I don't have a MP3 player - yet. The CD player isn't hooked up and the VHS thing hasn't worked since AT&T put in the DVR. The CD player in my car is used for books on CD. I have a really nice, regular turntable that I do use for my vinyls.
Wow! You have dial-up, Sherrie?

Right - I should have added mp3 player. I'll change it. 46, Evie.
Oh, you should add DVR. Interesting to see if there's an age gap with that, or if it is pretty universal now. I can't imagine living without it now (I watch TV when I want to...not when the episode is actually on).
Yes - another good one.
broadband, Sherrie.
46, eh? how do you have time to be on here so much, starting big discussions like this?? :)
I am a prisoner in Sing-Sing with unlimited computer access.
cell phone: yes for emergencies, not just conversation
texting: no, don't get why you wouldn't want to talk, say what you need to and get an answer in half the time
instant message: same answer as above
blog: read them don't write them
Facebook: no why would I want every stupid little bit bit of my life on the internet for a billion strangers to see, forever. I believe privacy is still a good thing
MySpace: same as above
Twitter: why?
GPS: Yes a useful tool when in an unfamiliar area
satellite radio: no, don't listen to radio much
broadband - which? Yes, because its faster. Cable company.
hi def tv: yes
dvr: Yes, love it, very convinient to ff commercials
hi def radio: no
mp3 player: no
I do have a very hi-tech bread machine - does that count?
I agree Pat. Can't figure out why people want to expose everything about themselves.
That's just it - you expose what you WANT to expose. You don't have to tell folks every little thing. Has been good for me in keeping in touch with some folks I wouldn't ordinarily keep in touch with (I'm not a phone talker and don't have much to say anyway). It also can help you find people you've lost touch with (for me a person from college, some folks from high school, some folks I've worked with over the years that I like, etc....I've moved around a bit). I don't use it a lot, more like to see what folks are up to.
YOU are in control...remember that! :) [some do seem to get carried away by certain social technologies, so always keep perspective]
And I like IM because again I'm not a phone talker. For the person I work with, we BS on IM (we work in different states), and use it for quick questions instead of using up email. handy for that.
I'm a luddite -- but I have an MP3 player (love music) -- got rid of my cable so no TV -- have a dvd-cd player, a turntable and radio -- and oh yeah, a computer!
cell phone -nope
texting - only if email counts
instant message - nope

Facebook -yep - but I never use it

broadband - which? Comcast

dvr - yes - but they are old
hi def radio - nope
mp3 player - nope
You'll love this! All I wanted for xmas was a radio for my office. Just a radio that would play FM and AM frequencies so I could listen to NPR.
You can't buy a radio anymore!!!!! You can buy stereo systems, or Ipod ports, or mp3 players - but not a simple plug in radio. My husband had to order one on-line! No stores apparently carry radios - Not even Radio Shack!
I have nothing but cable internet and tv. Component stereo system. I have a ton of MP3s but no player other than computer and stereo.
Which is very odd, as I am quite the technophile, actually.
I know. I was amazed. I wanted a little radio with just am/fm for my mom. You have a hard time getting an alarm clock that is just a clock too. Got a large number clock/radio finally, but she cannot use the radio part, too many buttons and modes for her to navigate. Still uses her old "transistor" radio when she goes to sleep. Talk about modern technology. :)

Hi everyone! Interesting thread. I can't remeber exactly what was on the list, but I have cable internet and TV, a cell phone that's either uncharged or on the charger, and I do belong to Facebook - only because my DD insisted I get with the program!! I don't use Facebook very much but only the people you want can see your information. I actually found my college roommate on Facebook and we have been out of touch for over 35 years. Eleanor
Interesting responses. (I'm selling this info to Google.) I have found people using Google. Not easy, but I have found a few. Are all Facebook user names apparent to you if you have an account?
Well, I guess I'm older than dirt. I have a cat.
Does he/she have a cell phone?
No, Chloe doesn't have a cell phone. haha I had an 8 track but it was towed away in the car.
I am so not with the times...
I have a cell but it's for work and that is all she wrote.....
Oh yeah I do have a Facebook account and I did sign up for it because you control who sees your info. You have to approve your friends and if you don't know the person you just ignore their request...I hooked up with many of my high school classmates and one of my best friends I lost contact with when we moved.
I don't have cable, mp3, dvr or tivo...we still watch some movies on our vcr.
This is an interesting thread! Here is what I do:
cell phone - Yes, especially when shopping in big box stores with hubby.
texting - No
instant message - No
blog - No
Facebook - Yes, I'm new to it and have found some interesting things there (hmmm...)
MySpace - No
Twitter _No
GPS - No
satellite radio - No
broadband - which? - Yes, DSL
hi def tv - Yes
dvr - Yes and I love it
hi def radio - No
mp3 player - No, but I'm the only one in this house without one. Maybe someday...
I'm 50, there I've said it!!
cell phone - I've been a Verizon customer since the 1980's. Makes the kids at the counter take a second look! Very amusing.
texting - My daughter forced me into this, but she's the only one I ever text.
instant message - My employers often use it. It's great for keeping in touch with college kids.
blog - Sure, when I want to give someone a piece of my mind!
Facebook - Not ever never
MySpace - Not ever never
Twitter - I do see some use for this, but not for me personally
GPS - I never wanted this, but now that I have it I can't live without it! I even spent $50 to get my cigarette light fixed because I couldn't stand the thought of not being able to plug it in!
satellite radio - I actually really want this, but not in the budget at the moment.
broadband - I have Comcast. I turned off my digital cable to save money, but kept the broad band.
hi def tv - Nah.
dvr - I REALLY loved my dvr that I got with Comcast. Someday I'll buy my own unit, but at $400 plus, not in the budget.
hi def radio - Nah.
mp3 player - I don't have the patience to listen to music all that much!
I have my grandmother's ancient portable radio from the 1960's with big honkin transistors and I just love it! I bought a new clock radio, and I can't get anything on the darn thing.
At work, we had one of Armstrong's original radios! Also had many of his papers.
Is it really big? My father still has a really huge radio, as big as a large microwave oven, and I THINK it had Armstrong on it, but I'm not quite sure. Were they famous?
Ooooo .... that must have been exciting, Victor. Did you "find" any moon rocks?
I was very fortunate to have been allowed to see a lot of historic "things" when I was in college. The best, while on tour (with the college choir) we visited an Abby in Lower England that pulled out one of their manuscripts for us to see .....
The abby started in something like 1218 (maybe even late 1100s) and the monks had started this particular book in the early 1400's. Very highly illuminated. So brilliant and stunning still, 500 years later.
We had to stand back 20 feet, behind a cord, so our breath wouldn't contaminate the manuscript and the handler, of course, wore a mask and gloves to handle it.
The Monks VERY graciously opened the manuscript to several places, all highly stunning. I was shocked that not everyone in the group was interested in seeing it!

I have found that it was our kids who necessitated our need for the cell phones - especially once they began driving. They each now rely on texting and we have that feature on the younger one's phone which is tied to our account. We can send text messages directly to them from the computers, which they prefer to voice mail.
They are also the reason for Facebook, and hubby has really taken a liking to it - me, not as much, but I like being able to post multiple photo albums which can be seen by non-members if you send them a link. I see more and more people signing up for it. You have the ability to control what you put out there or receive from others. Interestingly, I have found and joined the DG group on Facebook. This is quite a powerful thing, but you really must watch what you put out there.
I was 12 years old when the Beatles arrived in the US 45 years ago today. Feb 7, 1964. So that makes me 57.
As for your list, Victor:
cell phone -Yes. For emergencies & long distant calls. If I ever used 30 minutes in a month, I would be amazed. It comes in handy when shopping in the mall & I want to tell Mom I'm heading to our rendezvous point. LOL!
texting - No
instant message - no - In fact, I make myself invisible so no one will bother me.
blog - Yes... sort of. I have a Yahoo360 page but only post on it every 3-4 months or so. My last post was last November.
Facebook - no
I have a Flickr account for all my photos. I love it!
MySpace - Yes... again, sort of-but I never use it. I mostly signed up because my half sister has a page & I wanted to see the pics she posted.
Twitter - no - heck... the name "Twitter" bugs me for some reason.
GPS - no
satellite radio - no
broadband - as a former Verizon employee, I have Verizon DSL. I'll probably get FioS wen they finally get my complex wired for it.
hi def tv - no
dvr - yes - but rarely use it. I still tape stuff on VHS. LOL!
hi def radio - no
mp3 player - no
Nancy
