Weird Weather of '09!! ....... #4

Those chicks are so adorable. Will they lay eggs for the rest of their lives or only for a certain period of time?
When I was working and using Autocad and Revit (for arch) we used all sorts of shortcuts but they were specific to those programs. Shortcuts really are useful & time saving! What would we do without computers???
Thank you Judi, they'll lay for about 6 or 7 yrs. Alot of people only keep them for a yr as that's their best laying period, but I like to keep them for alot longer than that as they do continue to lay.
Susan
Shelly, what's a "character map"?
How long do they live? What do you do with them after they finish laying? I can envision becoming attached to them and ending up with a big bunch of old non-laying chickens!
Rain forecast for this afternoon and the next few days. Actually that may be very good since the gardens are all needing a drink about now.
They can live up to 15 yrs. I do get a little attached to them but not like a dog or cat. I have a friend that knows a Hispanic family and when the birds reach about 7 yrs old I give them to my friend and she in turn gives them to the Hispanic family for their winter meat. I do however have 4 hens and the rooster that I incubated in my incubator and hatched out, the oldest one which is about 7 or 8 now is the mother of the other 3 hens and rooster that hatched 2 yrs ago. I'll keep them until they pass on their own and will bury them. They're the ones I'm attached to. The mother's name is just Mom then there's Punkin, Baby, Sweetie and CG (Cruiser's Grandson) the rooster. I'm going out in a little bit. I'll get a pic of them. Poor CG doesn't have any tail feathers as the other hens that I had kept plucking them and killed the folicles. So I'm afraid he'll never have any. So don't be surprised.
Susan
Katie.... it's how people make all of those unusual signs and symbols like: the trade mark, registered trademark, degree sign.... Use the search function on your computer and search for character map or character bitmap and open what comes up. You'll have find it interesting I think.
Gardner... that's quite the chicken family that you have!
Shelly - so you say people are cutting and pasting character map symbols into their DG posts?
I've seen these symbols as part of the font collections when formatting text in documents, but didn't know there was a separate "character map" file on my machine.
I don't have a file on my computer called "character map". Are you saying it's a file that comes with Windows or with other text editing software?
Ah, I get what you're saying.
I searched online and it's a utility that comes with Windows operating systems for cutting and pasting these symbols into your text. I do have XP at home, so I'll look for it.
For everybody else, here's an online tutorial for accessing your character map utility on Windows XP and Vista. I'm not sure about MAC machines.
http://tlt.its.psu.edu/suggestions/international/accents/charmap.html
it's pretty standard on windows. I haven't dealt with windows Vista if that's what you have. But, it's been on every other systerm that i've used. From the map you can cut and paste the character or, while the mouse pointer is on the character you want, a small prompt comes up telling you how to type it. Such as: alt + 133 à or alt + 215 ╫

Susan, that sounds right up my alley. Just need to talk DH into chickens, kiddos are ready and willing but have been scared by 'bad' rooster stories from Gpa. I would love to find someone to take then... can't talk kids into letting us eat them. The eggs are a different story. I'd love to see pics of your coop sometime too. Might just build one and they will come...
Right - I just didn't know you were referring to a utility, rather than some sort of file. I have XP, so I'm sure it'll be there.
Even if you didn't have this, you'd have the characters installed as part of your font selection, probably, so you could also cut and paste from within a different text document.
I copied these from a Word document and pasted it here, using CTRL-C and CTRL-P: ©.
Great article today on MSNBC: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29034232/#storyContinued
Looks like it only recognized the second symbol, but not the first . . .
I'm going to give it a try let's try a degree sign °. WOW, IT WORKED!!! And my first try! Thanks Shelly!
Kris, you're funny! Here's my little family: Mom's in the center (Araucana/Rhode Island Red), on her left is Punkin and Sweetie, then Baby and CG (Araucana/Rhode Island Red/Plymouth Barred Rock) on her right. See poor CG doesn't have any tail feathers.
Oh yah, forgot Moose on the left and Brute on the right in the background. teehee

Sure thing Susan. glad that it worked for you.
Interesting looking family that you have there!
Thanks Shelly. CG is real afraid of me so he runs from me quite a bit, I don't know why as I've never tried to hurt him. That's why his one leg is in the running position. I just love♥ my chickens!

Interesting article - just because we women don't drool and get dilated pupils.....
I wonder about the implications of leaving that poor rooster with no tail feathers. Are the hens each staking their claim? Are they as a group castrating the poor guy? Did he deserve it? Does he retaliate?
Judi, the girls that did that to him have probably wound up on the dinner table by now as I gave them away in Nov. No he didn't deserve it, but they just thought it was fun I guess and no he didn't retaliate. So I got even with them for him! LOL! His mom and sisters don't bother him.
Susan
Your group is adorable! Some day... I too will have some. Just have to figure out how to keep them safe from the wild life and teach DH that they don't have germs... we're still working on his 'pet' issues. 4 dogs, 2 cats and 2 horses... he's come a long way.
I give up, can't respond.
So lost, I go on the day shift and miss all the talk. Plus to stressed out from the inventory prep to keep up, thank goodness its over. I can get back to me again.
I can hit a couple I hope?
Portland, never knew your name, now do and you know mine, but I like Tills.
Susan, love the little babies. Been a long time for me to have chicks. The first time I got some (12) I had them in a little wire fence area the coup wasn't finish yet. I had a old Samoyed called Czar, and he sat out and guarded them but he was not happy being outside the cage. He got in it, and was their mother they where happy and so was he. This was years ago, I have a pic. in a old album, have to find it was funny.
Kathy (got it right) you ever come out here, you are going to help me with this puter, and show me the ways LOL
As far as all my GD friends that I can't remember who said what and half the things said, I give you a ado. ^_^
Tills
Tills it is then. Dod you mean your DG friends because GD might mean something else :-]
I'm sorry for just lurking, but Portland, you made me laugh my head off at your remark.
Cute baby chicks.
Mary, who is that in the picture? I hope we're not your GD DGers. LOL You will catch up - just will take some time to get your brain off of work. There's no hurry. And I'm happy to help with computer stuff when/if I can.
Shelly, I found the utility. Thank you!
Tills that is one beautiful little girl.
Trying this too. ° Yeah, it worked. Still need a cheat sheet.
Susan, your grown up chickens are pretty too. I would have to give them away too, couldn't do the deed myself.
And here all I did was translate, didn't realize it could have meant something else. Read GD, must mean DG. LOL I do it all the time for DH without even thinking about it.
Well, even if we are GD DGers.....she still keeps coming back!! :-p However, I prefer to think that it was a typo!
Katie, I hope that the map prooves usual for you!
All of you gals are so funny. I don't mind being a GD DGer! LOL! Thanks for the compliments on the chicks and my chicken family!
Kris, I hope your DH will someday let you have chickens.
Mary, that was a neat story. I had a Malamute named Czar! This is really the only pic I have of him when he was an adult. This was one of our DD Senior pics. He died of bone cancer in 2001. I sure do miss him and all of my furbabies that we've lost in the past.
Oh, I forgot to mention, he was the oppposite when it came to chickens. The yard was his domain and if a chicken happened to get through the fence and into the yard he would have it killed and eaten before I could even get the door open. He was the fastest 105# dog I'd ever seen!

both are beautiful.
What pretty faces they both have! Thank goodness only one has their tongue hanging out!
Thank you ladies!
Judi, you're funny!
Susan
Beautiful little, beautiful big girl and very handsome dog.
Great picture Susan :0)
I feel so dumb, that was a typo I did not ketch, glad you all had fun with it.
Susan, love that dog.
Have to wait till I find mine.
Tilly, good grief! Don't feel dumb for that! I have typos all the time. Sometimes I feel like going over what i've typed. Other times.... well, there are better things to do with my time!
Beautiful pics Susan!
So Susan, how about a British farmer for your DD?
Ya I know but no one points it out so well, just made me feel dumb at the moment. I have made many typos in my time, but never put out there that way. Guess it hit me wrong, been a hard week. LOL
So I made this GD, Its meaning will be ' Garden Dreams of Daves Garden' Watch me get kill my Dave and Terry LOL
Hope you like it ^_^
LOL
