Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

Ever hear a turkey take off from a tree? I was resting, leaning on the trunk of a large tree, when one spooked--I honestly thought the tree was falling---put my hands over my head instead of running---real smart! My DH was laughing, I was not.

I dislike the turkeys in the summer since when we have cleared the beds of weeds, they are pleased & wish to take the dust baths & the plants go flying. Newly planted seedlings have to be covered with wire (hardware cloth) to protect them. there is a 'turkey season' here, but I would think they would be tough compared to domestic turkey.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

they do them free range my way which is the same as wild and they are better than the regular ones more taste and more tender

My stepson's friend got one with a bow & arrow in Maine---Mike baked it in a cooking bag----only the breast was good, he said--they should have thrown the rest away.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

my ex-bf got one that way too... his mom put the legs in a slow cooker... nasty looking... real black .. but the rest of the bird was good

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

wild meat is always darker I think it has something to do with what they eat probably a lot of dark green, the ones may way probably taskt great they spend most of their time in the corn field so I would assume that is the primary part of their diet.

Is this the "Where's Big City?" thread? Several of us from the Upper Midwest are looking for him also.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I heard from him a while back. He was okay - just busy. We miss him too. Great guy and great photographer.

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

Thanks, Victor. That's good to know; I haven't seen him around for several months.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No problem. Please let everyone know he is okay.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

hey going back to turkeys on sale this week 99 cents per pound and its lilydale mmmmm
I got three of them mmmm lots of turkey dinners

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

nothing like a deep fried turkey!!!!... do you brine your turkey?... if you don't I would highly suggest it

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I put it in the over over stuffed with cramberry bread stuffing with lots of onions and summer savory mixed in and I bake till golden color and then enjoy every single bite
mmmmm love turkey

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

mmmmmm sounds delish!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

for some reason since I moved out to the country I guess my heritage is growing on me and have started baking and cooking, my husband is very happy with home baking he says his sweet tooth is very happy lol

always knew how just didnt have the time, in the city the kids had activities almost every day so it was always meals made quick now I have more time since there is no acitvities to be had in the middle of nowhere and the kids have to be happy with the fresh air and playing outside which I think is better and healthier for them anyway

My hunch is that all these "short cuts" in food prep is what's causing such poor health in the younger generation.

How will they ever know how to make proper food if everything provided for them is fast and fried, rather than slow and baked!?!

I have to look to grandmom's cooking to find things that aren't fast or fried (or burnt!).

I miss her orange marmalade ...... mmmmmmm

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I did not fry but I did use the crook pot more than I wanted and we eat salade everyday since that is quick and healthy, I always have a fruit plater on the counter and snack for the kids is always raw veggies while doing homework

people today are to quick to go to the frozen section for prepacked food I do not even go to that section

my grocery shopping is always mostly done in the produce section three reasons one health, two I hate to pay tax on food, and three it so much cheaper to buy fruits and veggies than anything else I only buy meet on sale I will check the flyer and get what is on sale and put it in the freezer down stairs because it do that sometime I will go two months without buying any meat average for four people is 125. dollars per week and that is also including yogurt and fresh stuff for school snacks lol what is with the box stuff anyway lol

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Wow! That's really healthy & frugal! Sounds great, so does the calmer lifestyle and, always Italian cooking!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I cook italian, french, greek, chinese, japanese, cantonese, and anything else I feel like
its more fun to try different things the kids like mexican food
DH like food hahahha anything on the plate is alright with him if he is hungry
and me well I get to decide so that works for me

Thomaston, CT

I agree with you, Mona---most of our food is from the produce section---or dairy---have to have our cup of yogurt for the day! If my DH was shopping, all the food would come from the bakery & ice cream sections!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

lol hubby would just come home with bread products.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Isn't it interesting how we gardeners seem to gravitate towards the produce section in a grocery store? That is the biggest portion of our grocery purchases as well.......tons of fresh fruits and veggies.....plus lots of paper towels and tp. LOL

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I can't wait for summer just for the fruit selection.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - the supermarket stuff now stinks. It's kind of in between seasons. Lots of fruit is foreign grown and who knows what they spray them with.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I try to shop the perimeter of a store and do pretty well, if I bring my list. It's when I linger that creates a problem. Maybe if I get my icecream first, I'll move faster so it doesn't melt. :)

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I find the ice cream never goes out of season.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Thankfully!!!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I can't bring ice cream in the house I eat it too fast.

Edy's Girl Scout Cookie Thin Mint is the BEST!

South Hamilton, MA

Not much choice of flavors for 'no sugar added' & they put it on the top shelf!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thomaston, CT

Just tried a new gelato at our tiny store---can't believe they are so avant-garde---anyway it was a combo of espresso, chocolate, & marscapone cheese---delish!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yum

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I'll be looking for that.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Watch the "no sugar added" stuff. They mean refined white sugar.
There are corn sugars they use sometimes with splenda.
Saves some calories but still not good for diabetics who can only have half a cup per day,
WHATS THAT?
MY bites are half a cup.lol

South Hamilton, MA

They will also list--no suguar added & then list 'sugar alcohol', ok people, isn't that a sugar?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

yes.
Any ingrediant that ends in" ose" is sugar.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ore-ose??

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

dextrose,maltose,sucrose.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Menthos?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

It could happen!!
