That is a cool picture RJ. What is the plant with the two light pink blooms? A ginger maybe???

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, it's a ginger..I'm drawing a blank right now...but I've found a way to get them to bloom alot, by taking off all of the lower leaves..these guys are 12 feet plus tall, and they tend to block alot of light...taking of the lower leaves gives more energy to bloom.

Red Oak, TX

Rj, thank you for starting the new thread, that is a fantastic picture. I do appreciate the tip on getting the ginger to bloom more.
That was also a great shot of your first pink magnolia bloom, that is definitely a good sign that spring is on its way.

Rita, I will prolly keep my tropicals inside here this summer as Kansas is too windy and dry for them, although tropic man has good luck, but his whole yard is rigged up with established passis and wisteria and magnoila tree and well, then the bananas and all the other million things he has gives lots of shade .. My DH isn't letting me take the whole back yard.. so I am keeping the Tropicals inside.. ( I may at any time change my mind) I love your amyrills.. I have never been able to get one to bloom.. have two now and a crinium.. love the pink hibisus.. can't wait until mine get blooming.. I cut them back when I bring them in ansd strip them down.. now look at my three.. ( in the freezer room) sorry my house is so yukkky.. these three are Orange, Pink and red.. one double ruffly peach in with a red one for now..
these were just sticks a couple months ago!

Thanks Rita, clipping the ginger actually was Waynes idea...it worked rather above my expectations..

Joeswife..I'll have to dedicate the next blog to you-
Micro-climate Exploration and Exploitation!

LOL RJ....
a gal has to do what a gal has to do I guess.. anything to keep em alive..

How do you get those amarillus to bloom? heck! here is a picture of my Lavender trailing Lantanas from last year ( year two for them) they are inside now..

Hi again everyone..well lets see. Amaryllis. Once it has bloomed, remove the old flower stalk down to the neck of the bulb (skip this if your expecting seed). Wait until the leaves start growing really good and start fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer. When warm enough out side, you can either keep it in the pot or you can plant it in the ground for the summer. Amaryllis like full sun. They should be kept growing until about october. Keep feeding from now until then. Keep moist but not wet. Stop feeding in September. If the leaves start to turn yellow withold watering and let it go dormant. The bulb, after the leaves have died off or have been removed at the neck, should be nice and hard and larger than when you potted it or planted it. If planted in the ground; dig it up, knock off the soil and remove any dead or broken roots. Wash off the bulb and let it dry. If you have any bulb dust it would be a good time to put it on. Those in pots should be removed from it and the dirt knocked off. The damaged roots removed. Store bulbs in a cool not cold dark room. Like a cellar or closet. Always works for me :) If you live in an area that gets very hot during the summer, after noon shade would be very good for them.

Thanks... I think I have better start over trying these.. the ones I have are in the garage in their pots.. prolly frozen (22below out there right now) thanks for the info...

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Pretty hisbiscus Rita. I think you will like the tropical hibiscus nursery in Rockport (Bloomers). They have some really pretty ones. The one gallon size were like $6 last year and the 5 gallon were between $20 to $23 I think. I have resisted buying them cause of lack of room and I just got tired of the regular hibiscus and removed them from my flower beds years back. But now that they have the tropical variety I have two cultivars in mind that I want to buy this year.

I have never grown any gingers, Rita so if you have an extra start I wouldn't mind trying em. Thanks!

I ordered my plants (the tecomanthe and the purple chinese hat) from Zone 9 Tropicals last night. Hey RJ when does Wayne usually mail plants? on Mondays maybe???? I can't wait to get em in the ground. Wayne did say the same thing you did about the long blooming season on the PCH. That's what I'm looking for now--long bloom seasons. I like stuff that blooms through the summer.

Just went out to bring a couple of heliaconias in before the cold tonight......TOO LATE!!

They must have bit the dust last night.

SIGH!!!

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

What's your temp's like Hap? I thought Florida would be warmer right now. I'm in South Texas and it is starting to warm up some--40's at night and high 60's to low 70's in the afternoon.

Come on spring!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

It has been beautiful, 70's to 80's until a couple of weeks ago. Then it all changed. This will be the third cold spell since that time and tonight we are suppose to freeze. Right now it's 65 and a pristine clear sky and a mild breeze from the W. This am it was 48, very cold for here. But tonight? Oh, my. We;re all bringing our stuff in or covering as much as we can.

I thought FL would be warm too, LOL.

Red Oak, TX

phughes, those prices are just about what I can afford, but just being out there with friends is priceless.
I promise you will love the size of the plants fron Zone 9, I will have to look up the purple Chinese hat plant, that one is new to me.
I will dig you a nice clump of the ginger plant. Here it is before I gave it a trim like Rj suggested.

Joeswife, I like your trailing purple lantana, they are a perennial here. I saw a picture of the purple and the white planted together in a flowerbed, it was beautiful.
Tonight is supposed to be our last mid 30's night for a while, next week is supposed to be much warmer.
This is my Ginger plant after a good trim of lower leaves. It not only will bloom more this spring, but it lets in more light and air when the GH doors are open.

drapelady, I am very interested in buying a few EE's, I have never participated in a co-op before, but will take a look. THANKS ( I loved your Elena last year)

Happy_1, Good luck tonight with the freeze, It is not supposed to be so cold in Florida

Planter56, Here is Amaryllis Apple Blosson for you.

Port Vincent, LA(Zone 8b)

Oh Rita, your Amaryllis Apple Blossom is soooooooooo beautiful. Please hurry up Spring. I planted 2 last year and the leaves came up and where gorgeous, but they never did flower. Do you think they will this year?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Guess what! I have a Amaryllis bulb coming up! I thought it was dead! my daughter bought it for me last year for mothers day so I had planted it and forgot about it.. yay! It never bloomed but my DH loved the leaves.. are naked ladies a member of the amarillus family? My bulbs out back came from my Grandmas yard about 35 years ago.. they bloomed real good for about five years, then just leaved.. last year they bloomed again..

Placenciarita, both amaryllis are beautiful!!!
Joeswife, naked lady is very pretty. I think they belonged to amaryllis family.
My plants are taking refuge in my dining room and back bedroom again, it went down to 32 last night. it's going to be 33 tonight and 35 tomorrow night so the outside plants covers stay on the plants few more days. If this cold keeps up I need to move to warmer climate or build a green house or get rid of lot of the potted plants. LOL

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Sun,

Just buy a lot of blankets. LOL

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

OK...this is DEFINITELY THE most active forum on DG, lol! I was out for 2 days and can barely catch up!
Planter56, I have a T. Mysorensis too. I took the pic below in Brazil. Mine is only about a year old and probably too little to bloom yet. I tried it in its pot in different locations and it seemed to be the happiest agaisnt a north facing fence with plenty of water, so that's where I finally planted it (but I am in california keep that in mind).
How large is yours, we should compare notes!

That's beautiful. Does it need a lot to control it?

Hap

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Mine seem to do well on the N. end too. It got wiped out by the Hurricane.
Looks like I have two more chalice flowers opening ..probably tomorrow.

It's a gorgeous day here today...crossvine is throwing out a couple blooms..it also took dammage.

sunshinesw, I am so sorry that you all are having to go through all this bad freezing weather again. You will be so proud of yourself come spring, when all of those plants that you went to all that trouble to cover up, are blooming for you.
We do enjoy all those lovely pictures from Florida.
This has been a very strange winter. My Mother from the Caribbean had to use a heater for the first time in her life (probably the only one in the country). lol
Thunbergia (white eye susie) still blooming

Happy_1, you are too funny!!

Hi robcorreia, I love that picture. I have to remove a old hot tub, and there will be a empty ugly cement slab left befind. I will copy from your picture and build an arbor over it.

I know that you like Bromeliads

Rj, it was a very nice day here too. The buds on my chalice vine are falling off right before they get ready to open.

Where is the arbor picture? I just got a great idea for a part of my yard that is getting some new attention...

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

aaah...say it isn't so Rita! That's been happening to mine too, however there are mice and possums suspected in those disappearances. I put out mice poison 2 weeks in a row, because they seem to really like that vine..not only is it tastey, but it's a lovely highway too!

Joeswife..It looked like they are going to open tomorrow, so I'll take pics..

Buffalo, NY

Hey Robcorreia next to yours mines still a teenager. I have mine in a 12" pot right now in my hallway that gets the sun during the winter. It's growing very nicely too. I've only had mine for about a year and I will have to keep it inbounds. I will pobably put it in a 16" pot this summer and put a 6' bamboo trellis in it to give it something to grow on. If I put the plant on the north side of the house next door it will get morning sun only and no aftenoon sun. Hows that sound :)

Buffalo, NY

Hey placenciarita that Apple Blossom looks great I had one a while back and always did well. I just wish i did have trouble with wireworms and bulb flies and fireblight. :) I keep trying though. I have another Amaryllis coming along, but I can't remember what it's name is! I have to wait to see if it's the orange one or the stripped one. There are three flower stalks coming up so it should look wonderful when in bloom.

Buffalo, NY

Hey Joeswife. Yup those naked ladies are a memeber of the Amaryllis family and they look great!

Port Vincent, LA(Zone 8b)

Oh I hope so Rita. Thanks for the encouragement.

Rj , that has been a good crossvine. How old is it now. That is the same one correct?
