how long from seed to blooms thinking of starting some

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Victor - couldn't avoid the "hand shots" because the little heads were hanging down. LOL

Thanks, Allison! Hope you get some sleep tonight! Also hope Lily is feeling better! We had a similar scene with Molly at 3:15 a.m. She seems fine today. Yuk! Here's a sunflower to cheer your night! They weren't very tall this year for the most part.

I bought all kinds of seeds for sunflowers from 12 inches to over 6 feet I plan on making a good show of them from shortest to tallest in a circle so they will keep each other up if it gets windy also each hight has a different color how I planned the colors right lol

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Mona - I think it was around 6 weeks from germination to bloom. I'll check on that tomorrow for you. Most of the plants are getting pretty full and I think they all have blooms on them. I'm curious to see how they get along when the tropical rainy season comes in the summer.

This tomato bush got moved to make room for some more pole beans on the trellis. The plant has just about had it, but there are some good tomatoes on it still.

ooooh.....that should be gorgeous! Last summer I tried to plant a sunflower house for my grandsons in one end of my big veggie garden in NH. Don't ask......it was a disaster! I like your theory!

We like the "giant" variety, because the plants get to around 12 feet with huge "steering wheel" size flower heads that we use to feed the birds. This year I bought seeds for a variety that was supposed to reach 16 feet. One of them is now about 8 feet and the others are more like 4 feet. I still love sunflowers at any height.

my dahlias that I planted from tubers last summer did wonderfull got huge with many flowers just to let you know that it rained almost every day and it was humid for two months it seeds as long as the soil is free draining so they dont rot they will do great

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

The geraniums are on fire. The color is hard to capture.

Mona - the soil is Florida sandy soil, so I'm hoping they'll do ok. I know that others on DG talk about growing dahlias down here, but I don't see any others around the neighborhood though.

Here's a close-up of one of the new babies....I can't wait to see all the colors.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

they should do fine they love heat and water that is a good combo

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

There's nothing besides geraniums in that pot. Are you looking at the greenery? That's the geranium plant itself.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

no I was looking at the little round leaves think I recognise it as a weed lol just pulling your leg

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Here's another shot of the geraniums that Hank took this afternoon.

Arghhhhh! Now I see the weeds you are talking about. Oh Man!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Bet your milk can isn't painted such a wild color!! LOL We have milk cans by the door in both houses, because they are perfect for setting things on to open the door when your hands are full.

last shot of blooms for the day......more and more zinnias keep coming, but some got a bit discolored by the freezing temps.

HI Louise: Looks like he cold did not do too much damage to you. Neighbors told us that nothing in our yard got hit. That may not be entirely true because some other neighbors say they lost a lot. Getting closer to our next trip down, so we can see for our self's. Only four days this trip , if we have and damage will have to spend time fixing. I had Surgery on one of my eyes last week, had a little complication but now seems to be working. did not spent to much time on the computer, could not see to good.

the large one we have all kinds of them every summer have you ever seen one in flight they have the biggest wing span its an amazing sight

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

birdcam.... how cool is that????

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice shot John.

Thomaston, CT

Hope things are better, John. Louise, that's a great blue heron--night crowns are much smaller, & hunch over in a weird way--we ran into a huge flock of them in Stone Harbor, NJ one spring---someone was filming the flock--they look very ominous!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

yes they do last fall shaw about a dozen fly by I heard them before I saw them i could hear a woush woush sound I looked up and they had to be about 15 up in the air and it was loud.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

John - sure do hope you are doing better very soon with your eye! Enjoy your brief sojourn in Fla.! I hope you find no damage. Even things that get damaged will likely bounce back, I'm finding. My brug leaves that were exposed look terrible, but new ones are right behind them.

Robin and Mona - we didn't think this was a Great Blue because we have a bunch of them here on the River and one that hangs out in and around our seawall regularly. This guy was so much smaller than our Great Blues with their enormous wingspan, and he had some yellow in his crest. At first we thought he was a Louisiana or a tricolor, but they are much smaller than this guy. Once a year we get some various night herons and this is about the right time, so we were thinking he might be a yellow crested one on some A-roids. LOL You might be right since you both think he is a Great Blue. My DH swears not, but I'm just not sure!! Whoever he was, he was quite majestic!

Our resident ospreys have babies in the nest on the channel marker out in the River. We watched some odd behavior from the mother a couple mornings ago. There was a pelican floating around in the River not far away from her nest, and she kept attacking him and wouldn't let him even get away. Given their respective positions in the food chain and the fact that the pelican is not usually predatory as to osprey nests, it seemed surprising to us that he was seen as such a threat. I stood and watched until DH pulled me away.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

it maybe a young one not full size yet we dont see any babies up here so they must have their youngs down your way

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

The reason Hank thinks it is not a Great Blue is that he had yellow feathers in the crest. What do you think about that? We've never seen a GB with any yellow on it.
