Don't want to break the "no politics" rule, so in brief -- she never forgave him or Churchill for caving in to Stalin at the Yalta conference.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Good for her.

If you smother your passions long enough, you won't remember what you love.

....the small group being gardeners, I think.

"Gardens are not made by singing "oh how beautiful" and sitting in the shade" Kipling

+My green thumb came only as a result of the mistakes I made while learning to see things from the plant's point of view. " H. Fred Ale

And one for the rose lovers:

"There is simply the rose; it is perfect in every moment of its existence."
quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

That Kipling one is a gem and I've often used it with people who visit our gardens.

I like this one:

“'O Tiger-lily,' said Alice, addressing herself to one that was waving gracefully about in the wind, 'I wish you could talk!' 'We can talk,' said the Tiger-lily: 'when there's anybody worth talking to”

Lewis Carroll

Here is another that I really like:

"When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it is your world for the moment." Georgia O'Keefe

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Georgia O'Keefe really saw flowers lol
Great thread.
I havnt many quotes about much
"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet"
W.Shakespear (I think)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

She certainly excelled with her paintings of flowers.

Probably my favorite of all time is one I may have quoted above, about weeds:

"But make no mistake the weeds will win. Nature bats last."

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Georgia lived to be about 100 many of her later paintings were done by apprentices.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The saddest event in the life of Gertrude Jekyll must have been that of going blind. For a gardener and a lover of plants it must be the most cruel thing to happen.

This is an interesting link to see some of the gardens she designed:

Just click on any of the small pink dots to see photos of that particular garden. I especially enjoyed the name - "The Nuttery".

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Shoot, the pink dots won't click for me, I may have to open it in IE browser.

How wonderful that some one had the ways and means to restore that garden! I bet the book they wrote about is a great read.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

“A Garden is a Friend You Can Visit Anytime”

“When the world wearies and society ceases to satisfy, there is always the garden.”

"If one were as good a gardener in practice as one is in theory, what a garden would one create!"
V. Sackville-West

"A garden is never so good as it will be next year" -Thomas Cooper

"The trouble with gardening is that it does not remain an avocation. It becomes an obsession."-Phyllis McGinley

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

For some reason the quote about obsession rings so true.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Uh, for me too!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes, it is definitely an obsession. I am obsessed to buy new plants. I am obsessed when I come home to walk the gardens before I even change my shoes. Just to see what's opened. Sometimes in the morning I'm so obsessed to see what opened that I don't even go to the garage to get coffee from Russ before I make the swing around. I'm obsessed to have something new to see every year and season, even though I love the established. (And I'm especially happy if the something new came from a friend.) I'm an absolutely obsessed divider. Although not as much as my daughter who once got 100 divisions from one siberian iris. She just wanted to see if she could get the 100. I'm also obsessed with watering. I just love to water, and we have a well for the plants, so plenty of water.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Sounds like a good article, Polly:

Polly's Obsession

She walks in beauty.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

A writer, I'm not. Just obsessed.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

you guys crack me up.

Brownstown, IN(Zone 5b)

Polly I share the obsession.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The vegetables have burned so often while I go looking for "just a minute" (times 30, 60 or 90) because once I'm out I don't want to come back in. I've done my share of night gardening as well.

Everything takes second place to ordering what I want. Who would or could deny a beautiful plant a home just because we don't have the room? Every year I order and receive plants (some that I didn't order but adore) and magically they find a perfect spot.

I'll accept my gardening obsessions over those who chose to sit all day and then claim they're tired at night. What from? At least I know, when I'm weary and exhausted, that the time was well spent and my reward is beauty from every window in the house and for those passing by.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

AMEN

Glad I'm not the only one, Indynannyof 8. Are you a nanny to eight children? That must cut into gardening time, LOL.

Yes, I've had a smoke filled house, and alarms going off when I came back in. Usually I'm outside grilling, though. I always have to make sure I have extra burgers in the fridge.

Brownstown, IN(Zone 5b)

I'm Nanny to 8 grandchildren. Most of them are pretty grown up now with only 1little 2 1/2 year old. She is my garden helper.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

How cute! She looks ready to help. And it looks like a lovely garden. Do you have more pics?

I love the little gardener, stronger than she look.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks, 49 pounds of pure muscle. She is in the 90 percentile for height and weight, but as she is so muscular she looks skinny. Even slim jeans fall right off her. Wish I had that problem. And my gosh, can she eat!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

in my dreams.

Brownstown, IN(Zone 5b)

Your little GD is burning all those calories constantly right? That is great she can do that. My oldest son could always eat way more than anyone else but still maintain that build. His brother a few years younger eats the same way but has a different body type. He has gained through the years. He is the father of the little gardener and she is a large girl for her age. That was her 2 year old picture. Her parents are both over 6 ft tall and looks like she is going to follow them. I think it will be key to keep her active as she grows and she will be a force. lol I'm thinking basketball and volleyball. lol
Here's another pic of my garden last year. I posted it somewhere else so if you have seen it forgive me. I don't have many as I just got my camera last year. I am going to take a lot this year if my garden does well , maybe I should take some even if it doesn't.

Very nice. Looks like that perovskia again, that I can't grow. I'm going to try it again this year, maybe get a large plant of it locally. We'd love to see more pictures this year.

I thought your granddaughter looked about 2.

Yes, my granddaughter just burns the calories right off. She's 6. Her brother, who just turned 9 does tend to put on stomach chub, but he works it off too. I doubt she will ever had any weight problem. For breakfast here today, she had three slices of toast, ham, three eggs, a donut, a banana and a glass of milk, and one of juice. And no, she doesn't have tapeworm, LOL. She's a whirlwind. Dr. is estimating she will be 5'10" and Jamie 6'4".

I think you're right, the key is to keep them active. It's great to only have nutritious foods around, but when they are so involved in sports, or oher activities they always have junk available. If you keep them moving they burn it. Keeps that metabolism up.

If at first you don't succeed, failure may be your style.

We have a carved metal sign in our garden that sums it up nicely it simply says " Grow Darn it!! " Well actually darn is cleaned up a little but you get the idea.

Brownstown, IN(Zone 5b)

Found this a coupel days ago

There is a garden in every childhood
an enchanted place where colors are brighter
the air softer and the morning
more fragrant thaan ever again
Elizabeth Lawrence

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I almost forgot this one my Aunt Helen used to say. I understand there are lots of variations of it.

Spring has sprung
The grass has riz
I wonder where the flowers is?

How many of you remember that one?
