Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

Great minds think alike! i asked her the same question thinking she'd be buying this stuff out of pocket and it would be awhile before she'd have them ready.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Jim, don't forget the stuffed peppers.
Got a good stroganoff from Flower today.

Phyl, I'll be sure and put the dmail names as well as "real" names by each recipe. THat way we'll have someone to blame if we mess up really bad. lol

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

If a man is alone in the garden and speaks, and there is no woman to hear him... is he still wrong? Unknown

i think we're gonna have to have a No Man Bashing Zone in here, lol.
at work, we only had those on Fridays. =)

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Iove that Phyl, it will go into the book.
LOL, Tubby, I think that's what all our names will be if we make mistakes.
Added a couple catagories to the top post., the one for canning, etc, and for "Fast and Quick" Gotta have that for those days we jsut can't come inside from digging in the dirt.

Ames, NE(Zone 5b)

I'm not going to be able to participate we have had some family issues come up that I need to tend too. Have fun. Rachel

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh so sorry RR that you aren't going to be able to join us in this fun thing. Hope it isn't to serious.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

For Jim's request for "Real Food Recipes" I found my old "Mrs. Elliot's Housewife" printed in1869.....real ingredients and limited instructions in some cases, but very interesting....

My newer book "Scientific Cooking" from 1911 has some unusual recipes also....

Sorry to hear that, Rachel! Shouldn't we make her a cookbook, anyway, gang? One really needs the support of friends when there are family things overwhelming you.

I think those 1869 recipes might be just my kind of thing, Trisha. I love to read cookbooks, but I hardly ever actually follow a recipe; mostly just use them for ideas; things I never imagined would go together or what can I do with what I actually have?

It doesn't matter if there is a woman in the garden; if there are any children nearby, the guy's still wrong! Could that be why guys don't say "I love you" as much as women want to hear it? No one believes us! Oh, poor me, I think the cold capsules are going to my head!

Potagere

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

See the guys aren't always wrong.....I think Rachael needs a cookbook also....

Jim, Bill says I have never in my life followed a recipe exactly.....it's always a little more this, or alittle of that added would be good.....and yes, well This Is What I Have Today...

Hate being on cold meds!

Ames, NE(Zone 5b)

Like Jim said my envy will have an extra 1$ And happy I can
~Tubby

I'll send you a check and add a couple of dollars to help with Rachel's cookbook.

Lorraine, I need to tease you just a little here..
You said that you were putting the dmail names and "real" names beside the recipes.
Just please be sure to put MY name (Chris) and not DH's name (Glen)

Post #6071609 is what I'm referring to LOL!!!!

Hugs,
Chris

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Same here Chris I'll add a little extra for a book for Rachael!

You mean you are NOT the fabled singer?
Too bad, ladies!

(Chris) Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

I'm not and DH is not LOL... DH says that he was called Glen before that "fabled" singer ^_^

Ames, NE(Zone 5b)

See there Jim give them a little push and away they go LOL
Little tug on the heart strings helps to.
~Tubby

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Ok, now I don't know what to call you. Chris, Glen? Maybe I'll jsut make one up. I like that idea. lol
I think I have a haunted garden too and it's not cause I'm a man alone out there talkaing to myself. I just figure there must be little creatures out there moving things around and ruining all my stuff. couldn't be me.
I likek the popcorn box idea. How many times have I had popcorn for dinner. lol

Love those old recipes. I just never could reallyfigure the smidgen thing out.

I'm afraid I always follow a recipe the first time, then the 2nd time, it's Katy bar the door. No telling what might be in there. lol

We will do Rachel a book as well. Good idea. Jim actually has a heart~!!!! lol (Aww, we knew you had a heart Jim)

Found a bunch of gardening quotes todahy to disperse around the book, so if ya'll have some, send them on!
I think it would be cool to put them here and there.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

I want to join in! I'm going to send a check and I only have a couple of recipes, my mom has the slew 5 hours away, so I'm not going to worry about that.

Lorraine, it is alright if I do it on MS Publisher?

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

crissy publisher is one of my favorite programs!

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

It's great for this! I can't find either recipe so I guess I'll just be buying the book.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Make some up Crissy. what did you make for supper tonight snacks this weekend?

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

We ate pizza for dinner tonight and there's stew in the crock pot. I'm craving Captain Crunch right now lol! I wonder how that will work with some weird stomach virus, I guess that's what I got??

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Lorraine did you get the ones I sent to you?

(Chris) Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

Lorraine, that's TOO funny!! Actually, a long time ago, DH and I had a email address and it was ChrisNGlen, so I guess that would cover me either way :)

I'm working on the hints.. do I also need to keep them to the 4x6 format or not?

Chris (the other Glen) ROFL!!

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

I've been looking for REAL recipes too....but sheese...its hard to find recipes that dont call for canned or pkged stuff. I have a southern cookbook from the Blue Willow Inn, in Social Circle, GA. (it was a gift. I dont really think of myself as southern.....I'm an army brat who's family is from TN and lived in ga the last 18 yrs) but it tells about why we eat so much fried food, lots of fried veggies recipes, etc., its kinda fun.

i love reading them too but the only time i follow one is when baking. and then i still switch nuts or flavorings. its called real life and I don't plan...you just can't mess up making a bowl of cereal, yanno? recipes for one suck. or dont exist. I cant remember to bring the list when I shop.....in the winter you eat canned veggies and in the summer its whatever just came out of the garden. I just like drooling over the pictures. my favorite recipes are still in that basket ...handwritten and stained and someday, i'll type them up. my daughter gave me a cute album with 4x6 recipe cards but thats too much work and i dont know how to print on 4x6 card.

the one that everyone asks for the most is BLT dip....and buttermilk pie. and old fashioned boiled peanut fudge.

speaking of.....does anyone have a recipe for buttermilk candy or fudge? I keep hearing about it but have never had it.

Morgantown, WV(Zone 6a)

I'm planning on sending a recipe for microwave peanut butter (or chocolate) fudge.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Am I misunderstanding the rules for this cookbook? No packaged or canned ingredients? Or are we just doing an organic chapter in the cookbook?

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

I think we can put processed food in Becky there was just a conversation about Jim not being able to get much processed food so someone said lets make sure there are recipes with more natural ingredients too.
Just so you all know...We are too late he has already come out and nobody caught him. See http://www.gojp.com/groundhog/
now what are we going to do?
Robin

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

I think I have him. At least next year will be saved.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

There was conversation about having an easy recipe section that called for canned veggies and what-not, but I don't know if that is still on, I haven't had time to catch up.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

arejay you were suppose to run up there and catch him so if he did see his shadow we could have him for dinner. Now I guess we will have to go hungry and put up with 6 more weeks of this stuff. LOL

Becky .....

Yes, you misunderstood.

The "no packaged or canned ingredients": was my personal appeal for "Real Food".
I cannot purchase most of your US canned food products here and, in any case, have not used them in cooking in about 35 years.

In my mind there is a significant difference between a recipe that calls for :
2 cans tomatoes

and one that calls for :
1 can mushroom soup

Canned tomatoes are, universally, "canned tomatoes"
Canned mushroom soup exists, in my -- rather extensive -- experience, only in the USA and its Embassy stores abroad (the latter accessible only to US diplomats).

Beyond that, I normally use canned tomatoes when I run out of frozen;
and canned red beans in chili

"Real Food" means to me (the one who probably started this idea here):
1. natural ingredients
2. canned or frozen natural ingredients
3. No recipes that rely on Brand name or other packeges to make them work

Bottom Line:
I cannot get most American packegded foods here,
Even if I could, I wouldn't want to eat them.

DG is "International"

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Ive got you covered Jim. One of my recipes will be un-canned cream of mushroom soup.
Flower, I missed him by only a minute. He saw his shadow this year. But...He'll be cooked for the cookbook for next spring dont you worry!!

So, Robin:

will this recipe be CONTAIN or be for "un-canned cream of mushroom soup"?
Please don't tell me that it is COMS removed from the can!
On the other hand : 6 large musshrooms, chopped, sauteed in 1Tbsp butter until soft, sprnkle over 1 Tbsp flour and saute until flour begins to turn colour; add 1 cup chicken or vegetable bouillon and whisk until smooth
And, voila, you have the base for COMS without the additives and other poisons.

I await!

Jim

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Wonderful. A new addition to my JIM Collection (Gems from Jim? Could be a new thread...?) Thank you Jim, I will take all the hints and recipes you care to post.

Ames, NE(Zone 5b)

Jim your talented..Like my DB ..I can burn water LOL
Tubby

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Lol that was funny Jim. Mushroom soup removed from the can. The recipe is as you wrote now I am looking for a different recipe. Well I use cream and more butter garlic and some other fresh herbs whatever I have on had. Sometime some onion.

Morgantown, WV(Zone 6a)

I have burned water!! Melted the bottom right out of a tea pot. I was a teenager & it took quite some time to live that down! I am somewhat better than that now. I think that episode made me more determined to learn to cook.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Pam sounds like my DH, my granddaugher who is seven, comes to me and asked if I would come to the kitchen, Bill's pan smells funny and is turning red on the bottom......the pan and its thicker Bottom had at this point become a 2 piece unit.....Sage said maybe Bill shouldn't cook any more.......wise child!
