We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/944506/
Per request... just a fun thread of the photos of "frosty stuff" in the garden. I hope that everyone from anywhere joins in!! I'm starting it off with one taken last week.
The "Frosty Stuff"... #2
Speaking of goats - how much did it eat at your friend's place and do they still have it?
We got about 2 in. of snow last night, but it is now freezing rain, so that there is a 'crust' on the snow. Current temp 30. You all know what that looks like, so since I don't take pics, you have an image of the 'icy stuff' at my house this morning.
Thanks Shelly, those are Russian Olive. Also, those are Barbados Sheep. This is my view of the Cascades from south (left) to north (right), Broken Top, South Sister, Middle Sister and you can just barely see North Sister. This pic is a little far away, I took it from my back pasture. I'm going to town after while and will take my camera with me to get a better and closer pic. The names of the Three Sisters are Faith (North), Hope (Middle) and Charity (South).

Here's a pic of Bachelor south of Broken Top.
RC the black mondo grass picture reminds me of giant cat wiskers! Susan I love the mountain pics, so majestic.
Your view of the sisters is just amazing Gardner. great Pics. I was hoping that you yould post some of them because I think that it help put things in perspective of where we're all at in relation to one another and the "them hills" tee hee.
Cat whiskers! that works too!
Jan - hope you all are faring okay in that nasty weather.
Shelly - the pictures helped a lot. For some reason I was thinking you were looking north, when it seems you were looking west. Give me a zip code for the area and I'll Google earth it tonight when I get home - the topographical orientation really will provide a nice compliment to your photos.
I'm back, and thank you ladies. Here's a pick of just the Three Sisters. You can see the North a little better, it looks like the North and Middle are all one mtn, but the North is just in front of the Middle. I've been to the base of them and they are seperated. DH and I along with my DB, SIL and a couple of friends spent the night on top of the South when I was 18, DH and I weren't married yet. THAT was an experience, there was a dead buck deer on top and had been there for a long time.
I tried not to get the power lines in it.
Susan
It's not easy to get the pics without getting power lines and houses in the shot. One of these days I'll take the camera with me when I go to Redmond, then I'll get some better pic.
Susan
I'm really enjoying everyone's pictures. Thanks for sharing.
So glad you are enjoying them Sami, even though we strayed a little. Have you figured out where we're all at now?
Great pics Gardner! what a view. do you ever get tired of looking at those 4 mountains just beyond your front yard?
Katie.... I'm a little confused, you want the zip code of... where I do landscaping and took those pictures from??? the zipcode there is 97478

I have a nephew who lived in Bend a few years back and it was so beautiful during the summer. I never realized that Oregon got so cold and lots of frost. I've lived in California for 50 years now and don't miss those freezing Minnesota winters. Love to look at all the pictures as they are all so beautiful.
I highly doubt that you're the first to think that it doesn't get cold here. However, nothing like MInnesota! I never want to deal with winters like that. My mom's from there, she never wanted to go back! In fact, I don't think that she has been back there for at least 40 years. Where you're at is much nicer!
Thanks for posting your pictures Susan. Those are great.
Dh wasn't quite prepared for the cold when we moved up here from CA. He knew it got cold, just didn't realize he would get so cold! LOL He's better with it now, getting acclimated I guess.
rc....ebony pearl? I'll have to look that up in my book. hahaha
OHhh.... do look it up!! I'd be very curious to know if it's in there. i sort of doubt it since it really hasn't been on the market for more than a few years. However, I'd bet that it's parent is in there..... 'Pink Pearl.'
I was wondering where everyone was at tonight.
You're welcome ladies. In answer to your question Shelly, ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!^_^
Even our DD that lives in Vancouver now never gets tired of seeing them when they come to visit. She said the last time they moved back from Kentucky (they lived there 3 times, our little gyspy family LOL) when they got to the point where they could see the Cascade Range she knew she was "HOME". We had no idea they were moving back. She called me at about 4:30 one Aug afternoon in '05 and told me that UPS was going to deliver a package at 5:00, she said she had requested they deliver it at that time. So I went out about 4:45, opened the gate, came back in to finish my dinner and wait. I heard what I thought was the UPS truck come in the driveway and went to the door. Well, it wasn't UPS that drove in the driveway it was THEM! They had lived in KY for 4 yrs and DH and I missed them desperately! I yelled to DH that it was the kids and went running out and literally GRABBED DD! The GK's were next (the oldest GD and I fell over laughing all the way down). You know how you see reunions on TV with tears of joy? Well that was ME!
Here's a pic of the GK's while they and DD stayed with us during the summer of '07 while our SIL was working in and looking for a house in Vancouver. Those kids had an ABSOLUTE BALL in that make-shift pool. It was our 8' stock tank and it was PERFECT! They played in there from sunup to sundown. They moved the latter part of Aug so the GK's wouldn't miss any school. They came back to get some more of their stuff in Sept. and the youngest GD (she's the one splashing the oldest GD) was upset cause we had taken the "pool" away (it was 50 degrees out but she didn't care).
Well, now that I've monopolized this thread for a while I guess I'd better get off here! LOL!
Susan
Thanks, Shelly. It's just easier to find you with Google Earth with an address or zip code. I wanted to see what your place and the landscaping place look like from above.
Susan what a wonderful story! I love it! RC love the latest pics :0)
Great story Susan, beautiful GK's you have!
That is a great story Gardner! And what a landmark to know when you're home. And depending on which route one would take when traveling there... you might be able to see "home" 4 hours before you get there. That pool would be so great there in the summer. What a picture too!!
Thanks Rachel!!
Katie, google earth doesn't have the really defined maps to zoom in real close to the area where I am at yet. You can tell that there's a house there, but that's about it. Then there's 150 yr. old trees that will obstruct a view of 2/3 of the property anyhow. However, when I'm at work (google earth is already on the computers there) on Sat. I'll see if I can get a good close up of the place that I landscape at, link it. It's not a really large area, 1/2 acre maybe. It will always be a work in progress there for a quite a few years. They knew that they wanted to put up a large initial investment when they decided to landscape the area, but then they had a priority list of things to be done when there is time and/or money. I also do the upkeep of it (thank goodness they don't have a lawn!!!) weeding, Stupid Deer spraying, deer fencing around stuff, pruning, etc. Their deer are so tame that they can be taking a nap right next to the driveway and wont budge when the vehicles go just feet away from them. They eat everything. They have row of lavender and rosemary that lines the driveway that's absolutely beautiful about 2 months out of the year that the deer forget about it.

Now I expect that last one to get up and walk away! Cool!
haha, Thanks Sally.... you never know, it just might do that! Given that it's a blackberry, they travel wherever they want to, whenever they want to!
Thank you ladies! It just feels good knowing they're back on the west coast. Whenever we would hear they were having tornados in that area I couldn't sleep at night and I'd make her promise me that she would call me to let me know they were ok. They had one tornado in Lexington (where they lived) that she said they were outside and didn't even know that it was a tornado as they didn't sound the alarm. It hit their ex-BIL's place and did some pretty extensive damage. Totaled his new van, tore the awning off of his house, knocked trees over onto his house. I think it was a category 3, and as I said they didn't even sound the alarm! Our GK's were in the house upstairs sleeping and slept through the whole thing while DD and SIL were standing outside in it! I told her she could have talked all day (which btw she's good at, DH nicknamed her Squirrel when she was about 2 lol) without telling me that.
Yah Shelly, you can see the mtns for MILES from the desert (coming from Burns on Hwy 20), and same way coming from the Prineville area after you come up out of the canyon they're in. Great pics.
Susan
But Google Earth does give me an idea of the elevation - I was just relying on it to get oriented from the picture to where you indicated your house was.
I had been trying to get closer on GE and haven't found that you can see much close up, either.
Do the deer eat both the lavender and the rosemary? Wow. That's interesting. So it's not a "given" that they avoid those, as Portland said.
Susan, I bet that the kids don't miss those tornados one bit!! I've never been neer one, and don't want to. My grandmother used to talk about what it was like to here those alarms go off and head to the basement from where ever your at. Which is ok.... if you're at home. Fortunately none, of her family ever took a direct hit from one, but others in the community did and that was enough for her to want to leave. I don't take hwy 20 if at all possible, too hot or too cold. But, I do to hwy 97 pretty regularly. I love Shaniko, so I always stop there. But, it always amazes me that I can see "the west side" (the sisters and bachelor) from Shaniko. and that's still how many hours away?
Katie, yep.... they eat both! I don't think that I've ever taken a picture of it after they've hit, but I'll look when I'm at home. They do prefer the lavender to the rosemary, at maybe a 3:2 ratio.
Shelly, Shaniko is about 92 miles away so it's about an hour and a half drive from here. I know what you mean about Hwy 20 E. There's miles of NOTHING!!! We've only gone that way a couple of times to Vale, OR to go Pheasant hunting with my parents, couldn't wait to get across that desert in BOTH directions. It's such a BORING drive!
Susan
Yep, that's my sentiments exactly about hwy 20. Boring! At least 97 has really cool ghost towns.
So, here's a better picture of the view of three sisters (only 2 can be seen) from the landscaping place. They don't appear so far off because I'm not actually focusing on a close up plant. So... perspective is much better. It was a little too dark for a real clear picture, at least without having something to set the camera on.

That is a great picture of the sisters - the color is kind of surreal, with the pink sky.
Thanks, that's what I was thinking. It had been a little brighter just a few minutes before. But, of course by the time that I got to my camera, the sunset was waning.
Shelley - that last pic looks like lavender, maybe.
