I always loved this container at the old house

this is an overhead of the reeeealllly small border. This was my only garden besides the tubs

That first one is beautiful, Jo Ann. The colors blend well but it's the fact that it didn't get out of bounds because you kept it trimmed that makes it so lovely to my eyes.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I just put plants in pots and hoped for the best with a little fertilizer as a hedge.
When I just looked I realized the first combo has a Peter Wonder? I think it is.
These containers were done in July 2005 waaaaay before DavesG.
I'll see if I have an august or september to see what progress there was.
Yep August 27. The Peter Wonder( unknown to me at the time) is huge.

Lovely combo, Jo Ann. I love that first container, too.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Peter Wonder does want cutting back unless it's in with other larger plants. It is a beautiful coleus.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I ordered two for the container combos this year.
Things are better planned this year.
I feel settled into the house and in better controle of the garden
This is one of the PW combos
OOOPs thats Watermelon
He he

pardon my ignorance, but where is watermelon? Do you mean an actual watermelon plant or is that the culticar name of a coleus ?
(Is it obvious at this point that I've never seen a watermelon plant growing ? LOL )

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Peter Wonder, Caladium"Christmas", non stop begonia trailing and coleus "The Boss"

HO HO JD
watermelon is the name of the coleus variety.
It is similar to Peter Wonder when looking at a thumnail in my files.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Good work, Jo Ann.

JD - real watermelons have tremendous leaves.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the trimming tip Pirl, I would have just let everything just grow like topsy

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The larger the leaf the more you will notice you cut it back. I try and do it when I have plans (or rainy weather is forecast) so I don't dwell on it too much.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Wonderful collages, JoAnn. I need to start growing Coleus. The shade garden looks so boring once the azaleas and rhodies are finished blooming. I usually buy a few flats of Impatiens to brighten up the area until it's time for the Begonias to bring it back to life, but they're getting boring. I used to be able to buy so many more varieties of Impatiens, and now they seem to be limited to single and double and little else.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Jo Ann told me there is a co-op planned with Rosy Dawn. Here's the link:

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Thanks pirl, I think!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Quite welcome.

I had already ordered so I emailed them to see if they'd give me a direct discount since I had mentioned in every Email that I'm a subscriber to DG. We'll see.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

The co-op season is starting off nicely. I've ordered some double hellebores. I'm still on the fence about the glads and lilies. I think I can find them locally at those prices. Besides, I'd rather not wait until sometime in mid-March or April to plant them.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I got some of the double hellebores also. Unfortunately I found the thread a few hours too late and "someone" had ordered the last of a variety that I wanted. drat.

Waiting on the calla co-op to open up. The prices look to be much better than retail.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Same here, Louise, but I missed two of the ones I wanted.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Hi Polly - what's the combination in 6057967? I love blue . . .

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I was curious and looked for the one katie referred to, gorgeous blues: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6057967
(katie, you can click on that post # and it comes up on it's own page so you can copy and paste the URL)

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Oooh, thanks, Sue, I hadn't even thought to do that. The colors in each of the plants seem to pull on eachother and make your eye go all over. That's the best way I can explain it. Love, love, love that combination.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I have to squint to read those tiny numbers!

The color echo here is the euphorbia bloom matching the centers of the aeonium 'Schwarzkopf'.

Oh my gosh! Those are phenomenal. They had a single one in the nursery the other day. I can't even tell you the price, becaue with our rain, shade and freezing temperatures, I know I couldn't keep it alive. How many plants and how old is Schwarzkopf?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I bought one piece from HD 2-3 years ago and now have several large plants scattered in both the front & back yard. Here's the original one blooming as well as all the other PF images.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/190125/

This was a single piece I broke off from the original and just stuck in my heavy clay dirt, it always takes.

Unfortunately, they don't survive the winter even in zone 9a. I have to buy new ones each year.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Ah, too bad, they do fine here, our freezes aren't as extended as yours. Aeoniums are one of my favorite plants, I have several varieties, like 'Sunburst', 'Kiwi' and 'Variegatum' which are my favorites. (can't pick just one!)
Last post, my eyes are drooping! Night Zu.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

ZuZu that is beautiful.
Too bad about winter but worth the eye candy while it lasts

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Beautiful combinations, Sue. I love the depth of color of it.

The cool greens go so nicely with dark colors.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Hi Katie, that is siberian iris Coronation Anthem, nepeta Walkers Low, and ornamental grass calamagrostis Avalanche. I'm pleased you like it.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Love that combo pirl!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Very pretty! Is that a euphorbia?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, it is. I believe it's NOT Bonfire but can't recall the name now.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I love the combination of chartreuse and burgundy/purple/magenta (whatever it is). It stands out so well in the shade gardens in the PNW.

Pollyk, I've never gotten Nepeta to grow that big, so I'm surprised at it's look. Yours appears so blue in that picture. Thanks for the ID.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I bought seeds this year, wee'l see how that works.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Some nepetas grow quite tall, Katie. Walkers Low, oddly enough, as the name indicates otherwise, and Six Hills Giant grow very tall for me. Walkers Low is very blue.
