Show Us Your Birdfeeders Vol. 11

Marlton, NJ

Cool pic Rose!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I dont' worry about what is on the ground from the sock, because the doves and juncos take care of it. I think. It's all such a mess out there right now!

I can just imagine the sound of all those starlings!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Finally a brave American Goldfinch tries the new feeder. It was super windy today too.

YAY!!!!!!

I told DH the other day I have figured which birds are the bravest and smartest. It is the Goldfinch hands down. They find and try anything new first!

I got takers on my new feeder today..and guess who it was????

interesting you say that nanny. goldfinches by me are so skittish. they won't dare be around the feeders if I come out to fill them up, and while they'll go to the feeders if I'm out on the patio, I move and they fly to "safety". Chickadees are braver in those regards, as are nuthatches. and the small/medium woodpeckers are like that too now that I think about it (always forget the names of the small and "medium" woodpeckers...hairy and something)

ooh, just today, I was out filling...ahem...predator urine to hopefully save my arbs from the deer and a red-breasted nuthatch was in one of the arbs. it was quite close and VERY curious as to what I was doing. It didn't mine me looking at it either (some birds seem to be fine as long as you don't look...lol). it was so cute...great moment.

the only thing I hate about the niger seed are the hulls. I use shelled seeds/nuts only for the rest because of the shells on the ground are too much, but can't do that with the niger. oh well, can't win them all.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I just meant in the sense of they have always been first to checkout any new feeder or the first to find the waterbowl. They do scatter up into the trees if I approach them!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Nanny...you have talked me into that feeder...I really like it!

Mrs. Ed..the American Goldfinch love the new feeder!

Bird feeder junkies.

Hey, mine finchies are just starting to take to this new one. I looked up the results for your bird count last year rose and I can't believe how many gold finch you had!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

I must confess that I am a bird feeder junkie! I am just going to buy one like Nanny's and then I will be done...maybe...

Yes Mrs. Ed...last year was the year for bird counts. We had had that late killing frost after everything had started to bud so the natural food was scarce. This year is much better and I see birds eating natural food all the time. We still have lots of Goldfinches but nothing like last year. Of course I cut back the feeders by half and feed on the ground around the brush piles so that could keep a lot of them away from the feeders. When I do my count this weekend I will have to do the brush piles separately...I hope it doesn't rain or that will probably not happen!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

good luck! I just counted 10 here. Not too shabby for a rainy day.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

It is raining here too ...I thought the Redpoll had shown up but it was a Pine Siskin. Hope he shows up for the count this weekend.

Also of note the Starlings found the caged suet feeder but don't like it!! They land and try and eat and fly off..I guess it is too much trouble for them!

I looked at Hummer feeders the other day...I can't wait...

I stuck this orange out the other day just to see if anyone would try it...looky..a bee! Spring is just around the corner!

i got TWO hummer feeders for Christmas! Holy Cow, can't believe the bee! I saw a moth yesterday.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Take pics of the new feeders...I may have to go out and buy some!! LOL!

I saw a bunch of those bugs that skim across the pond yesterday. It is supposed to be turning cold again though so I will probably hold off on putting out the Hummer and Oriole feeders!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

They are both hummzingers…

one is this window hummzinger.

I want to find a feeder like your Havahart Feeder one Rose!

Cute hummer feeder Mrs. Ed. I wish I could put one of those up. I do wish I didn't have to bring stuff in at night sometimes.

I was just looking at those today pelle. I just won't do houses though around here.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh nanny, that would be perfect for your window by the computer.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Pelle you wont' believe this, but my Mom bought that Acorn house last May when we went to the Iowa Roundup. She told me that she saw a feeder later on this fall. So… maybe you've found her mother's day gift!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

That acorn feeder and bird house are so cute..would love to splurge!

Mrs. Ed..I have one of those window feeders for the hummers..they really used it last year! I had it in the bathroom window and it was very entertaining...LOL!

Nanny...I would be happy to pick up one of those Havahart feeders for you, just let me know!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Well Rose, with all those hummingbirds, I can imagine every little one was in use.

I had such fun watching at the kitchen window that I thought it would be nice to have something I could see around, so I asked for the hummzinger from DH. Then DM saw me ooo and ahh over the window feeder and got me that one!

Wanna see the countrys' biggest bird feeder? My entire 8' x 36' covered front porch is a gigantic bird feeder. Right now I have mostly pine siskins and redpolls. There is a flock of 2 -3 hundred of them here now that showed up in early January, and they are so aggressive, they've run off most of my pine grosbeaks. I had around 80 grosbeaks here untill this hoard of lbbs showed up, but I do still have a great variety of birds here. About 15 different species feed on my porch during the winter months. Here is a shot of my 36 foot feeder.

Holy Smokies!!

McLean, VA(Zone 6b)

I got the new finch squirrelbuster feeder today on the way home. I couldn't believe it when I got to the garage and found that I don't have any niger seed!

Marlton, NJ

That's a shame penne but hope you like the feeder.

Wow avaeads!!

Cute one Mrs Ed! Let us know how you like it later.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

It's one of those "dial a bird". You can dial the base to make a tiny finch opening or a larger spillway for other birds. I wonder if I'll have any takers. I'd probably have to take down all the other nyger feeders though, LOL.

I've only had about 10-11 goldfinch at a time right now, but still lots of house finch. They seem to prefer the BOSS though.

Klamath River, CA

Yesterday I saw this piece of 2"x6" cedar laying around and decided to make a feeder...............Now will the birds use it?
