Al's Thread - Part 2 - Come back, Al!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thats really good advice JoAnn and im sure saved alot of heart ache by posting it. Making mental note to tell DH, or have Sophie tell him. Whatever works...

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

that is why I am using seasoned wood that was cut last spring and it is maple the branches are about four inches in diameter

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I have also larger ones for the frame

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I cant wait to see the finished piece.
Pixie does that mean you let Sophie do the dirty work?
You cleaver girl.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

mona- that arbor is beautiful.... how were the individual branches attached?

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

no no you have the wrong idea that is a pic from another thread I am planning on building something like it this spring hahaha and I am hoping it looks half as good I will be happy

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

that is the question I asked the guy that built it, my hubby has a book on building with raw materials will have to do some studying before we start.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

lovely photos and great ideas! I really love that grape arbor, Mona! I can just feel the breeze on a hot summer day! I also like that Adirondack "twig" structure, but do agree that the elements would be harsh after putting so much work into it. Of course, if Sophie wants one, she should get one!!! LOL

Celeste - I am also tempted to order Tomato Soup. I hate the name but love the color and the look. I am fond of the coneflowers......and especially love that they require NO care whatever. I once had a terraced garden that I planted along a very long driveway where the ground was as hard as a rock. The coneflowers spread like crazy and bloomed year after year without water or any kind of care.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

the grape arbor is mine I built it, the pic of the entrance arbor is the one I plan on building this spring

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Very nice!! Impressive that you built it yourself!!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

over the years I have built decks, fences, arbors, trellises, garden shed, pergola, and in my younger days renos of homes like gutting bathrooms etc.. and rebuilding now I stick to outdoor projects that I can do over the season without turning my life upside down to old for that now will not live in construction zones again

all the power tools are mine my hubby does not like them hahahha

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

You go girl!!!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Amen!!!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

ya the fence well we me and hubby redid the fencing at our old property 100feet on both sides and 66 at back and two gate well the weekend we started I was about 6 months pregnant and it was so hot I kept having to sit and he kept saying what is wrong with you are you pregnant or something well it took us four weekends to finish the fence all 266 feet of it man those days are done no more fencing for me, had a chainlink one installed last summer I watched the young guys sweat and smiles a lot hahahhah

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

DH got this rustic furniture workshop book for xmas lol from me it is all about how to connect wood so it will stay and it shows how to do arbors and stuff its cool so when I saw the pic of what the other guy did I just have to have one

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

they grow them tough up there!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

yes us canadian girls with acadian background are made real tough lol hahhaha and we come in good sizes too hahahhahah

Good sizes even Passiflora 7+ ? :-)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

You're something, Mona! What fun!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I admire that. I don't do wood stuff, grass or cement projects. I am really good at getting DH to do it and just hand stuff to him and supervise. In all the years we have been married I have learned that if I do a job once it becomes my job. So I do not do wood, grass or cement projects. LOL

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

sizes and shapes?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Your a smart girl Pat...especially if you trained DH that well! lol

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm not very big but I can work like I am. I'm what you would call.."wiry" maybe? Not sure how you'd describe me but DH says it's all good...."dynomite comes in small packages too and it can move Mountains" lol

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Yep, the truth is I don't mind hauling mulch, digging holes, trucking buckets of stone away but ya gotta draw the line ya know. After all these years I am getting a lot smarter and too long in the tooth to do as much as I would all by myself when I was young and stupid. LOL

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

well that is the idea live and learn there is always a better way of doing things hind sight is 20/20 and I have learned to let hubby do all the heavy lifting that way my back doesnt go out and we can get more done

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh for that I bought me one of these...
I need a new one though as mine is getting old.

They have a lovely dump truck like body...it's heaven for the compost.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

nice do you have the trailer that goes in the back?????

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I don't have one of those cool little trucks :( Does it do wheelies?

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

ill ask my brother he got the vehicle and the trailer he said in came in handy when they built their house lol he is spoiled

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

No wheelies for me but if you open her up she'll do about 40mph. lol

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have a little trailer but I hook it to the Lawn mower instead, it doesn't like doing 40

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Whooo hooo! That's not a little truck; it's a little hotrod. Do you have a bunny seat for Sophie?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

No! lol She was not on my mind when I bought it. I've had it for over 5 years now and i'm lost when it goes in for repairs!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I just have my tracter the kind to cut the grass and this summer I picked up a used trailer for 100 dollars man that little thing is handy when we started to do the wood for the winter we used it to get it all back to the house much easier than carrying it lol

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Boy do I love to talk to smart women!

Pat - "long in the tooth"...LOL. Sounds to me like you're long on wisdom!!

Pixie...love that cute little workhorse of yours! That's just what I need for the farm. Of course, if Hank heard me say that, he'd croak, since of course he looks for any excuse to put "Lydia" on the task. "Ain't she a honey?" LOL

Now thats a SERIOUS vehicle WOWSER DonnieBrook. Man I wish I had one of those to rip out my driveway.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Dahlia - She's a peach! She is named "Lydia" after the first settler wife who first lived in our house in 1763. She had a baby every other year in that hilly forest for 25 years! Can you imagine??? All of them lived and we know the names of each. I'm a real wimp compared to her!!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I am in awe of the settlers/homesteaders.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Me too! Incredible courage and fortitude!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Okay I want one of those little trucks too. The closest thing I have to that is a two wheel wheelbarrow. LOL How fun is that little truck. So jealous.
As to Lydia and to her, may I say, handsome and looking very proud owner there, that ain't too shabby either. I bet a lot of diggin' gets done and mulch moved in hurry with that red beauty.
