beautiful. Amazing looking flower. How can we find out how to buy one?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

O I lied. Seeing the orange euch I realize I also have 'Sundown'. I moved it for deck reconstruction and it hates me right now. Cyndiehook is impossible for me to have just one favorite. Head over to the Dahlia Forum and look at everyone's picture threads and I'm sure you will find the perfect dahlia of your dreams.

not to many perennials that bloom for over three months without watering and as long as you smile at it they just keep smilling back

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

Scicciarella, Beautiful flowers. I would love to see pics of your garden. ( I realize its not a good time for photos).
Do you have good luck with these varieties spreading?

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

no they make a nice clump and stay put because I collect some of the seeds and the birds eat most of the rest
clump is about two by two feet and up three feet tall blooms the foliage about 20 inches they do amazing in full sun that may be a problem for other plants to grow like in bad soil sand clay they always so well

South Hamilton, MA

There is a coneflower in Klehm's catalog named Tomato Soup--surely one could do better than that for red. Luckily we all like so many different plants that gardens don't all look the same.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have 'Tomato Soup' coming along with 'Coral Reef' and 'Fragrant Angel'..I can't wait!!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I cant wait to see them all bloom
I did some areas with many hostas and astibles
and other with daylilies and echinacea
will post when they bloom

I think this is tomato soup it is dark red
most can be bought from regular seed companies and they sell them at walmart and homedepot they are in pretty well all garden centers just remember to loosen the roots and plant water and mulch and they live forever

I like all of them the showy one anyway some with the thin petals not so much

Oh boy lots of pretty pics. I do hope we will see some of Al's beauties too. I can't wait to see them for real this season. Hoping all the new ones from last year return. The new resident that showed up late last summer could be a problem. I may have to put chicken wire around them all so the ground hog doesn't wipe them out before they can get going. These are tough plants and my only problem is getting them through the first year because of critters and the occasional nibble of flowers by squirrels. They all seem to leave them alone after they are established or a little later in the season when other goodies are available to munch on. Here is a pic of the evidence left by one squirrel.

maybe it has to do with the fact that they are edible

well I planted lots of them last june grown from seed if I remember right 8 different ones so now I will have to see if the critters eat them lol will keep a eye on my plants and you nwill have to trap the ground hog and move him out or you may not have a garden

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

He will probably get disappeared like all the previous ones that have set up shop here over the years. They can do a job on a garden very quickly though, so chicken wire, hot pepper, garlic and anything else I can come up with will be in use. I'm hoping he will get an early invite to the fox family's first dinner party. They are cute to watch and I don't mind sharing my space just not my garden. :)

this pic is of my cool spot for hot humid days an arbor covered in grape vines it is amazing that it will be up to 10 degrees cooler and no humidity since the leaves absorbe it all

Looks like a nice place to rest and enjoy just looking at your garden. Just think a nice tall cool drink and a warm breeze with the smell of flowers in the air. Ya can't beat that. Aren't gardeners lucky.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

by july it is amazing it just looks like a pile of leaves but it is all done with 2by2 and has designs built into the walls lol cant see much when the grapes take over

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I TOTALLy luv your arbour. It looks so natural!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

now here is the problem that was on my last property moved last year and will have to start over but this time I want something like what I saw on a thread since we cut down some really big trees last year to put in the pool I want to use the branches to do this

or something like it lol he is very talented and I dont know if something I would build would be this nice but I can try with help from hubby

South Hamilton, MA

Great structure. It looks like you need someone who played with Lincoln logs as a kid.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I think that's worth a try. Will take a bit of time but you will sure appreciate it when its finished.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

scicciarella, After you build it, please send me a video of how you did it, so I can give it to my brothers and DH to build one just like it up at the cottage. It is so perfect for Muskoka. Patti

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Patti, Can I get in line for that video?
Actually DH said "hmmmm, thats neat, let me see it again" then he studied it for a few minutes and said "they did a good job" and walked off. I, of course, followed and said "Think you can make one of those? Looks hard, lots of work..definately made with love" at which point I winked and then grinned really BIG! lol

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

And, of course, batted your eyes. Maybe you should have Sophie ask him. LOL.
It does look great!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Good idea...tie a note on Sophie that she wants Daddy to build her a castle just like that one. lol

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I bet if Sophie say it she would want it. Perhaps she could be looking at it when Daddy walks by ;)

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

no problem I will document it and post pics everyday so we can all have one

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Dont everyone jump on me but!!!
I am sorry to burst a bubble here or maybe just a word of caution.
I have built small trellises and gates from saplings in the spring so they would bend into nice shapes within a frame of larger pieces of new wood. They dry out and shrink and disolved in a bout 2 years.
I believe the variety of wood used is important ..Maybe treating it against rot. These are things I wish I had researched befor building.
I was really dissapointed when my trellis for climbing nastuerteums just buckled under the weight because the cross bars had rotted out after the first year.
I really hope the arch is a success and everyone gets to have one.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Ya that is true. That arbor looks like it is placed in a row of cedar trees maybe. Cedar would be a good wood to use. Lasts a long time in the weather naturally. Doesn't look like he bent anything and used thicker pieces of wood too.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

There must be books about Adirondack style building.
Thats the typ of construction used in that arbor.
Some day I want a gate at the end of the walk along the garden. Its bluestone and ends at the back yard.
I will add this to the ideas for such a portal into the garden.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

That's a really good point ge1836. Wet or dry conditions will affect it for sure. Bent willow is big here and I'm sure it must be treated.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I was using Maple saplings and iron wood.
I have no knowlege of the neture of trees. I just chose certain trees for where the branches came off thetrunk.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

This is my walking stick.
I post it upside down because thats how it grew in the woods with the interesting roots exposed.
I nipped them off and freed the tree and stripped the bark.
As you can see its handy for hooking vines too high to reach and other uses.
It even gives the "Rockefeller Salute" when needed.

Thumbnail by ge1836
Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

LOL very nice. Multi-use tools are always the best. Ones you find growing...priceless. :)

Rockefeller Salute: is that like a Redwood tree?
