(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Me too Maggie... I am new to flower seed starting... and it's addicting isn't it?? I am hooked. Course I'm hooked on the RU's too!! I love Love's Lookout too

Dallas, TX

Sheila, stop it! you are scaring me. Is anyone coming from this way so I can follow?
Heyy Becky I hear you are bringing Sarah in from Houston ... now what are you doing in Houston?
DD I will give you my cell phone number ... actually I will give all yall my cell number. I have Sheila. I think Phyllis and my girlfriend from chicago. :) Anyway yall give to me again.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Sylvia it is really easy to get over here just get on 20 East and get off at the Canton Exit for 64 come in on 64 to loop 323 and turn right and follow that around to Broadway and go right on Broadway (69) South.
I'm sure we can hook up once you are in Tyler and you can follow someone if not me to Love's Lookout.
We won't let ya get lost in the country ......and people are good around here about stopping to help someone stopped along the side of the road.
I had a couple stop about 2 wks. ago on my way home when I had a flat tire and was getting ready to change it myself.
not used to someone helping like that but it sure was nice.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Sylvia... nooooo PEG... but she might be driving here.. haven't gotten the details worked out.. but aint it great she's coming??... yay!!

Gotta get my trade list UP.. I promised it 2 nights ago.. I am a slow poke!!

Dallas, TX

Phyllis didnt you put your cell phone number in mine? Or was that Coco?
I dont remember .. I am so stressed here lately. I think I need to start winding down on the first so i will be ready for the fifth.
I really dont have anything to trade...I will bring food and prizes. I do have 8ft Elephant ear bulbs.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I also need Karen's or someone's cell # up there--I could get lost (which ya'll all might be hoping--lol)

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

gee those grow in Texas? I thought they were only in northern states...those are some lovely trees when in bloom...Lee do you by chance have more then one to get rid of?

Oh heavens, Sylvia. It wouldn't have been me. I hate cell phones, I can barely answer one, much less program a number :0) I still have a rotary phone in my kitchen. lol

Dallas, TX

Oh Coco ... you are too funny. lol are you making something Chocalate for the RU?
Thanks Lee ... I dont know why I like that tree ... but I do! I am going to get thrown of this property if I dont stop planting trees. I just finished planting 8 poplars.
... all around the backyard to hide this ugly fence. I know they are trash trees, but they grow fast. when my pretty one grow I can cut them down, plus I need the shade for my Hostas.
Phyllis I remember, we were at Charlenes.

Oh no, sorry Sylvia. Since closing I've had to get rid of my permits that allowed me to purchase bulk ingredients wholesale, can't afford it otherwise. I was just saying on another thread how much I miss making Easter bunnies :0(

I love the Catapultas too. We only have one, the blooms remind me of orchids :0)

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Phyllis - I have one left w/yr name on it. There are 2 types of Catalpa, I believe...and one type grows down here....maybe the other will too,...I don't know. Lee

Catalpa bignonioides - Southern Catalpa is in the plant files and the one I have. Some good pics of the flowers. There is a particular catapillar that feeds on the foliage (commonly referred to as a "catawba worm" or "catalpa worm" that emit an odor when impaled on a fish hook....that is very attractive to fresh water catfish (note: an old fisherman friend insists that the water must be flowing for the magic to work) I know of folks who have a grove of Catalpa - trimmed yearly to keep the heighth in check,...in order to facilitate collecting of the catapillars - which are then sold as catfish bait....even freezing them for later use (although fresh is always best :~)

oh thank you so much Lee

I did some looking too after I had read the post before about you saving one for Sylvia and found the info about the caterpillar and that there are the 2 kinds of Catalpa trees. ...guess that means I better get my fishing lis. and find a good spot for catfish as that is my fav. kind of fish LOL

Dallas, TX

Am I going to have a bunch of worms everywhere?

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Here's the link to catalpa in the PlantFiles. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1682/ After reading all the reviews, I decided I don't want mine anywhere near the pool. Mine is still potted, so I am going to plant it off away from the yard where the big mess it makes won't be such a problem.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Sylvia - if you don't want the catapillars on the tree - it's easy enough to break the cycle so they don't return each year....kinda like web worms do with pecan trees......they will return each year to munch on the leaves unless controlled

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Roll the worms in a little cornmeal and freeze them..........Catch fish by the kazillions!
Just write worms on the package so no one thaws to eat, LOL@!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

alright Karen! self sufficiency to the max--and Frodo would be proud of you too.
;)

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL, Thanks. My aunt Dinah wouldn't use anything else to fish with, so I learned that at a very young age.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Sylvia.. no , they'll pretty much stay on the tree.. the're some kind a butterfly catapillar.. Josephine or Sheila will know the answer to that one..lol.. but they do make good fishing worms

Patricia... mine too isn't close to the house..lol

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It is the Catalpa Sphinx moth
http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/showimage/1065/
Josephine.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

they're a beautiful cat and don't eat much.....(relatively speakin')

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

TY Josephine.. you always come to my rescue!!

Lee.. that's one ugly cat..lol

Karen.. ty for that info.. never thought to roll them in cormeal.. great idea!!

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Your welcome Becky. I have no idea what the reasoning behind that was, but my aunt is 92 and still fishes with them rolled in cornmeal, so there must be something to it.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

anything that works for someone 92 is good enough for me
=)

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Amen Debbie.. ain't that the truth!! I know from past experience we've just froze them separate and bagged them together, but then when they start to thaw.. it's a mess.. bet the cornmeal keeps they drier

Dallas, TX

Lee... I got to bring you something ... do you like Hostas?

Worms in the freezer ... oh my! lol

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)
