I have to agree wtih DD-dude *giggles*...with the way RU's have gone everyone is almost like a chicken with its head off running around with trades and looking at everything and we never seem to have enough time to visit with everyone.
bring stuff with you for trades and to show off and I bet we can plan a day separate for doing a class or two.
Plus we can plan it at someone house where we would have water and such closer when needed.
Spring East Texas Round Up
blkraven,
I would certainly sign-up for a class, so bring examples of all you do to the RU so we can decide wha class we would like to do. The price is certainly right. I pay $15.00 for a two hour paint class, so $20.00 for a four hour class is great.
I agree with the DD Dude.....haha, I guess my nickname for you stuck David ☺ It suits you! Phyllis is right too. I don't think your class could get the attention it deserves at an RU. People ARE running around like chickens with their head cut off just trying to do trades, eat, prizes, etc....Taking students for a later class might be better for you and the students....
As per Marylyn's request I have listed your Round up....Jo
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/557555/
classes? Somebody say something about classes? as they say on Hip Hop Harry...."I want to learn, I want to learn".
Hey Jo Thanks for listing it !!!!!
Ya only hada ask! LOL Have a great time. Jo
Yeah.. and I am the biggest chicken with her head cut off, running around at the RU... don't think I've started clucking yet though...hehe
I know Jeanne.. I am always interested in "how'd they do that"
Well, you gotta exercise the brain and challenge it or you will lose it. Me, I want to keep learning and challenging my brain. Sometimes I sits and thinks and sometimes I just sits.
Hey Catlady, how are you doing ? Guess you have all your school kids running and gunning. How is your running mate Loraine doing ? ( speaking of chickens with heads cut off ). Look forward to seeing you gals. The bag of gourds I got from you are going to good use. The grands cleaned them up and we made birdhouses during Christmas visits. I am hanging them in my new "Hiden Garden" area. Really enjoyed playing with them as much as the grands did. Ya'll need to come see me.
dude
Morning Dude,
I'm fine now, but was sick, really sick, all during Christmas vacation. The kids are up and downbut doing my best to keep them all in line. Last week was a real challenge. Lorraine is fine, last Sunday she and Maggi came down and did a gourd project.
Think I'll make a trip to the dirt house and get some more gourds to trade at the RU. Hope we have a chance o visit you while we're down that way. If not, will have to put that on the calendar for summer.

Won't be able to make it this year...y'all have fun. Roundups are out of the equation this year, and gardening itself will be just hit and miss.
"eyes"
Just mentioned to DH that we should make an effort to go to Tyler this year, as well as Arlington. I have a lot of things trying to root but have no idea if they will. The trade pages intimidate me something awful. I don't usually know the names of what I have anyway. Will bring anything I can round up. Mainly want to meet all of those that I see their names frequently. May just have to take over the guest room at Phyllis' when it comes to a lesson. hahahaha
Your artwork is to die for, Kathleen. Wish I had just a little talent.
Christi
you know I even have an air mattress if need be too LOL
I wasnt going to teach a class at the RU everyone...lol...Way too much work to prep and to pack..lol.. I want to spend my time meeting every one and having some fun!!!.. I teach my classes at my home. Ill post when I get one set up.. Ill bring stuff to the RU to trade and we can talk about setting up a class (or 2) for the DG group later...
I will probably make this one this year--I have a good friend near Palestine and will be up there a lot this spring as I'm picking up a piece of land next to him.
Debbie
Debbie, do you mean you will be buying some land up here?
Will you be moving to East Texas then?
Josephine.
I'll have two places Josephine--I haven't had a mortgage here for about 5-6 years so I'm not leaving this place. This is mainly an investment for now because I have several good friends up there. Its just land--I will probably put a weekend/vacation kind of house on it within a couple of years. Maybe about 1000 square feet. I'm also probably going to go in half with my brother on a tract of land he wants in Angelina county.
Well that is great, it will give you a chance to spend some time in different climate from the one you have now. Congratulations.
well Debbie, when you get to Palestine let me know. We live just northeast of Palestine off Hwy 79. We are going to start looking for a small piece of land closer to the coast as my husband misses his salt water fishing. We are mortgage free also and Palestine will stay our home. Land is pretty cheap around here.
land is very cheap there right now, that's for sure. Actually, I'm there quite often these days--at least once every 2 weeks.
Well, let me know when you're coming sometime and we can meet for lunch or something. You might also want to join us at our RU in Jacksonville in May.
I have a B-I-L that lives in Tomball. I love antiquing there.
I thought this was the thread for the Jacksonville RU--but I am easily confused. I'm at home today taking contractor bids, that makes for a confusing day in itself.
Debbie
Debbie this is the thread for the Jacksonville RU, so you're in the right place ☺
Debbie,
Thats why I ended up in E Tx.. Cheap real estate!!!...lol.. Land and housing are still inexpensive here especially if you compare it to other parts of the country. I got my home (1200 sq ft ) with 2 out buildings on almost an acre for less then 40,000.00 2 yrs ago. The house was very livable Yes, it needs some work ( all older homes do) but was still a deal. I was brave and bought it sight unseen and am very happy with it
I had a rundown house across the street from me. This guy bought it and the 3 acres it sits on for 15,000.00. He spent about another 25,000.00 redoing it..Its nothing fancy, just a 2 bedroom, one bath home (about 1000 sq feet) on 3 acres and he got it for 40,000.00 when it was all said and done. Not to shabby of a deal..
Just be patient and a deal will show up.
Kathleen
the pic is of my place as it was when I bought it...
That's cute Kathleen with oodles of possibilities!
Good deals out there now with people needing to unload it too--makes no sense to be in paper assets now--glad I got out of them at their peak--I have a real good financial planner in Palestine. He suggests parking money in rural real estate right now (key word rural--LOL) and advised me to sell one of my businesses while it was still worth a reasonable amount.
16 year old houses need work too--I figure it makes no sense to just make hurricane repairs without doing some energy efficiency updating (esp since there are tax credits for it). Houses constantly need something--I haven't figured any way out of that anyway. As far as that goes, cars always usually need some sort of maintenance too.
edited to add: in 16 years I've made really good soil here too!

Josephine--
Could you root me a Tecoma stans by May do you think? I lost my 9 year old one in the hurricane--completely uprooted it and blew it into the neighbor's yard. If so, some of these Manfreda maculosa's have your names on them. =)
I only lost a peach tree, one of my tropical hibiscuses and the Tecoma stans--also bent up my wrought iron arbor (I can live without it). Got off lucky with the plants anyway....
Debbie
O.K. Debbie, you got a deal, that is great!!!
Josephine.
super--is there a trade thread here yet like on the Arlington RU?
I don't think so yet, but I will keep track, no problem.
I got confused. Pretty normal for me. I guess I didn't realize I was still on the RU thread when we started talking about Palestine. Sorry I confused you Debbie. I have several threads going and I just lost track. Mea culpa. ^_^ Didn't I say something about exercising the brain a few posts up?...........
That house is adorable Kathleen. You did good.
DMJ1218,
if your looking for energy help you might check this out.. http://www.usa.gov/
I qualified for it (Im on disability) and they came in and weather sealed the house, replaced one of my doors, added insulation in the attic to bring it up to the recomended R 38 value and insulated the exterior walls, along with retro fitting my AC unit from a 2 ton to a 3 ton all at no cost to me I applied for it an July of 07 and they just got it done last month. It doesnt matter if you rent or own the home.. Not a lot of people know about this and you have to be pretty poor to qualify..lol.. but if you can qualify its a God send!
thanks for the info--but I'll have to just take the tax credit, I definitely won't qualify. But I will get that info to my brother who is on disability--not sure if he would qualify either, but he would long before me. What I'm doing is a radiant barrier up inside the attic--it attaches to the rafters on the inside right under the roof; and more insulation. At least that's what I'm taking bids for this week. Then solar panels, I have a real broad, low pitched roof in the back of the house and a new tankless hot water heater. Radiant barriers, certain insulations, solar panels, and the new tankless hot water heaters all apply for 2009 tax credits.

thats great stuff Im trying to go more green with my home improvements when I have to replace things. While it does save moneyin thelong run and help the earth it still costs to get it in place....lol.. Im doing little things like my rain barrels, composting and a few other things as I can afford it.
Every little bit helps!
Had our attic re-insulated two years ago with cellulose, treated newspaper. Costs a lot less, no scratchy stuff and has worked just great.
I have posted a new place for us to post our photos with our names and dg names. If you would like to post yours here is the link. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/948924/ I do hope we can get this going as I have sometimers and don't always get the names to faces right.
Charlene
but not tax deductable
Charlene, thanks for the link
LK
