burn_2007, that female Evening Grosbeak doesn't look too happy about having her picture taken! LOL

I've noticed a couple of people in northern areas taking pictures of birds at water bowls. How do you keep them from freezing over in this weather?

Melanie

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

LOL , that's why, I post her, because of her expression.
The bowl is a heated dog bowl, that I got at the pet store here. Some have found them at Walmart, Works really good, the birds love it. I got it set on a timer, from 7am to 7pm.

Adel, where did you get an Emu?? lol

Countrymouse, checkout Tractor Supply Company if you have one or you can go online and order the heated bowl. That is where I got mine.

Fox Sparrow...I haven't seen it now for a couple days. But I just might be missing it. We were gone for a bit saturday to pick up sonn from the hosptial. We we got back there was a good size blood spot in the snow. SO something got something. I saw one of the hawks zip thru on sunday.

Is pine siskin the bird of the season? Seems like a lot of us are getting them for the first time (or is it just me projecting??)

A smallish group of the pine siskins have become regulars. When I went out to (finally) fill the feeders, many let me get real close, and two even stayed until I was in about an arm's length of them. Awesome! And I love their chatter. Pretty much any finch chatter is awesome.

For me they like to eat the sunflower chips and the niger seed. they don't touch the peanuts or larger nuts.

Here are a couple of wigeons at the lake on my way home from work today. They are very shy and will fly off into the water if you approach too closely.

I just heard a cardinal singing. I didn't think they sung in winter!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

According to my WBU flyer, late in January the Cardinals and Tufted Titmouse begin to sing as the days lengthen. Yipee!!

The Wigeons are beautiful knip!

I've been on travel and have not been able to post any pics but I have been watching though - nice pics everyone. I finally coaxed the Blue Jays to my backyard for some photo ops. Here's a couple of ground shots.

I'm baaaack and am enjoying all the great pics on this thread! Have wanted to comment but have not been able to put two coherent words together until now...company will do that to you!! LOL!

I had a first yesterday and thought I was dreaming when a Common Redpoll showed up in the backyard. I have wanted to see one for over a year since I saw Burn's and Mrs. Ed's!

I still think I am dreaming but here is a poor window shot that proves it! What a beautiful bird!!

Oh my Dellrose, that is a beauty. I'd love to see that one in my garden.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Nice bright one, too!

Dellrose, that Redpoll looks like he has been hitting a few backyard feeders. Such a beautiful and chubby bird.

I need to load the really fat one we have....I am not sure what type. The birdwatching has been tremendous fun. And seeing yalls photos ....awesome!!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Congrats Rose!!!! Maybe one will venutre my way someday!! lol

My Jays are very unhappy with all the starlings we have right now and eating up all the peanuts.

This Carolina Wren does not come on a regular basis and always shows up in bad light!!

Thanks everyone...I am watching this morning but so far have not spotted the Redpoll again...I can only hope it shows up again.

Nanny that is an adorable Carolina Wren. We have one that is roosting in the light fixture in the garage and actually is living there. It is funny to see the tail hanging in the same place every night!

Here is 3 of our resident male Eastern Bluebirds that come several times a day for mealworms. They still take my breath away every time I see them.

And here is the female Bluebird...my most favorite of all birds!

The Harris's Sparrow is still on the farm and can be found in the same brush pile eating the corn nearby.

The corn also attracts the Cardinals...here is a handsome male!

nanny_56....................The Emus are in a field close to the post office where I took the other pics.

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

A week or two ago there were two Pileated Woodpeckers visiting (which happens sometimes -- a couple or an adult with a kid?). While one was eating from the suet feeder, the other decided to go on the ground. First time I'd seen this.

Cute little Wren nanny. My Bewicks Wren is smaller or skinnier than your cutie, but I usually only see it when the light is too bad for a picture.

Dellrose, I think I'm convinced that when I see my first Bluebird in the spring, I'll put some mealworms out like you do. They're such a beautiful bird. Speaking of beautiful, that Cardinal is sure a looker. Love that Sparrow too.

Wonderful photos that make it fun to visit this link every day. Great job everyone!

While I was taking a picture of a red squirrel, a pine siskin flew into frame. I got lucky!
