DAILY PICS VOL. 173

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

That last thread filled up so fast and with such great pictures! If you missed them, we came from here:

Here's a Pine Warbler that I've been trying to take photos of for days. He's quite elusive!

This was the better picture, but I thought it would look even worse in thumbnail. He likes looking for bugs in all the dead leaves and twigs which makes for a difficult shot.

I couldn't crop this one close enough darn it!

Finch -- I like how the branches frame the face. It's much better than what I usually get which would be a branch blocking the face!

Okay NOW my kids are helping ID these babies!! :)

Pine Siskin?

Great job Elphaba! Love the warbler. Thanks for starting the new thread!

Yes Heny that's a Pine Siskin.

Beautiful Dove knip!

Great photos to start off here. Love the color of that Warbler.
Glad to see the Pine Siskin too. They love to eat my thistle.
That dove is just beautiful Kniphofia. Wow.

I still have 3 Annas Hummingbirds here and I finally caught a photo of this poor little girl. The front of her lower bill has been broken off, but she's doing just fine and living through our weeks of low night temperatures.

Elphaba,
I make a fancy suet that pine warblers love. Have you tried suet?
Johanna

Love the Hummingbird duc!

I have a another female Red-bellied Woodpecker coming to the feeder.

She's quite lovely don't you think?

Wow, Pelle, she's beautiful and the way she poses for you is wonderful!!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

She is lovely Pelle!
Duc, fab hummer!
Heny, cool shot with the mirror image like that.
Knip, pretty dove.

Johanna, I tried suet last year, nothing homemade though. It just hung there for a long time and then the squirrels ate it. I thought it was kind of gross! The warbler comes down to the pond, so if I could just catch him there. Wouldn't you know, I was transplanting stuff around the pond this afternoon and he came right down and landed in the perfect spot in the sun. I just had to stand there and watch him b/c I didn't have my camera.

He came another time when I did have the camera, but he landed in a shady spot. I've brightened the exposure a lot!

Yall these pictures are all awesome.....and helps me ID as well! ;)

Apparently today we had a Pine Siskin party at our feeder today.

We had a red head type of woodpecker but HE would NOT stay still for the picture. The cool thing, my son who is 11 watched for close to an hour trying to take a picture of the fellow. Boys staying still for an hour is basically a miracle.

I want to see some cardinals.....do yall suggest something special?

Sunflower and Safflower seeds for Cardinals. Mine even like peanut halves but I won't recommend that since it might bring in undesirables. :-)

Nice pic Heny!

Even the Northern Flicker came by again yesterday!

The northern flickers are tearing my yard up! They are digging the ant nests up, I'd guess. I've got divots, holes and ankle-breakers in the 2 areas that have the ants. As soon as it started getting real cold around here, they showed up in the yard and at the suet. This is the adult pair that has sent their young'un that was with them in early Dec. away. They appear to be doing some kind of pre-mating activity. They are interacting very differently than I've seen them before. Is this normal for this time of year?

Marlton, NJ

I wish the Flickers would come to my suet feeders.

Nice pics nanny! Naturally I'm partial to the Flicker!

I have know idea if that is normal or not JuneyBug. I have never had both male & female in my yard together at any time I don't think. Only 2 males have been here since the cold weather.

The birds were crazy in my backyard this a.m.! Here are a couple of pics of what it looked like. Primarily Cardinals, juncos, white-throated sparrows, goldfinches and Mourning doves.
Heny, I'll send some of my Cardinals over your way.

Here's another one: It was almost like they thought is would be their last meal!

Pelle, I've never been able to attract any kind of woodpecker to my feeders, not even for suet, but today I had two female red-bellied Woodpeckers come down to my yard for a heel of white bread! I was unable to get a pic of that but I did get a neat one of her and a male cardinal on the same branch

Wilmar, AR(Zone 8a)

Later I decided to rake leaves and I picked that heel of bread up and laid it on the tub that I keep my seed in and a Blue Jay decided to investigate.
This is my last one for the night. I've got to go to bed! Great pictures everyone

Hi cb, Glad the Red-bellieds came to your feeder! The Northern Flicker is the only one I cannot get to come in so I can't really complain. Nice pics!

Lurking today. Great pics. We have red squirrels in our walls and the pest control guy suggested no bird feeders till he gets here and removes them. So I am living vicariously through your feeder pics. I miss my winter birdies. Been seeing lots of hawks around lately-redtails and juvies all over. Those mice and voles are nice and easy to spot against the snow and since more folks are heating with wood to save money (ach! more pollution), more woodpiles for rodents to live in. One year I saw a sharpie catch a robin in winter. I know that our robins are here year round. I've seen them for 6 years now.

Marlton, NJ

Nice pics nanny!

Hope things get fixed soon boojum!

It's a waiting game.

Clinton, MD(Zone 7a)

Henygril what's that you have in your feeder with the Pine Siskens?

Thanks

Plymouth, IN(Zone 5a)

I've been noticing a couple of this particular sparrow at the sunflower seed feeder the last few days. I believe it is a White Crowned Sparrow.
