stinkin' squirrel

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The relaxed look on his / her face just kills me.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What seems to have enticed them is the new suet feeder. There is peanut butter in them and I think the smell drove them nuts. They hang upside down and chew on it through the cage.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

WOW Victor, What great pictures of that Stinkin' Squirrel. LOL

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

you are probably right - they ate all the seed and are now cleaning out the suet here which is also peanut butter - can only hope it is the contaminated pnb.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Holly Ann! Nice to see you again. Have not seen you on Photos in quite some time.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Great pictures, Victor. Does Bullwinkle get his photo op now?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Cat. I would prefer a moose! But not jumping on the feeder.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

No I haven't been there in a long time but I am still taking a lot of pic's. Was just thinking about stopping by and posting a few the other day.
We have tons of Chippies everywhere. I wouldn't mind so much if there were just a few but we are getting overrun.

Great shot! I like them. They were never a problem. Mine are deer, squirrels and bunnies.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

chippies are a problem here and cause a lot of damage - they lost the cute factor a long time ago.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What kind of damage? The tunnels?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Little Napoleon?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yes, although the tunnels are more like complex labyrinths or under ground condo complexes - and they are every where. i do my best to keep the population under control.

Napoleon is right handed not left.

I took that shot in the mirror, Sherrie.^_^

I really enjoy the squirrels, chippies and other wildlife that gets drawn into our yard. We have woods right behind us and I enjoy watching everything. I put out bird seed and have a couple of water sources so I can't blame them for coming in after all I put out the welcome mat. Luckily we haven't seemed to have a lot of deer issues. A couple of years ago during the winter they were coming in at night and cleaning out the bird feeders. I didn't want to encourage them but figured if they were coming in anyway then I might as well feed them. I put out wild game feed and corn. There was a herd of 8 -12 that came most nights as soon as spring came they were gone and we haven't had them come back. We also had them come in several summers ago during a drought for water. Couldn't figure out why my water troughs were so low all the time and then I happened to see one and figured it out. I thought the ground hogs that came in for water were cute until they ate some special plants and decided to live under the barn. Then the humane traps came out and the family (it became a family) was moved. I like watching the Squirrels and don't mind feeding them I just hate that they throw all the seed on the ground, searching for just the piece they want. The chippies are so cute. It's the tunnels that are the issue. They run under the garage, the patio and the raised beds. We also seem to have more black snakes. I wouldn't mind them either if they ate more of the mice. I guess it's like everything else, you have to have the right balance.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

well i have black water snakes here and wished they get more of the chippies - they are cute just too much damage.

Maybe squirrel is auditioning for the flying squirrel olympics. We have a bank area tunneled by chippies. I have my fingers crossed as to the plants appearing in the spring--were their roots eaten? There are I. reticulata, grape hyacynths, & dwarf irises on the slope. When the snow melts about July it will be time to apply the fox urine again.

Victor - your last flying squirrel is the best!!

Thanks Deb. Thanks Jen. Allison sent that to me earlier today.

South Hamilton, MA

It was a fantastic cone year for a large white pine. they shoud have a source of food there. We never feed them (on purpose). One squirrel was diving for food in the snow the other day, not quite the place if looking for acorns, underneath the tulip popular. Perhaps the heavy snow cover put it off. Our 'wipe your feet on the mat' is just inside the door.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nice shot Victor..such determination!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Holly & Victor, Those are great shots of those Stinkin Squirrels & Chippies. Even in the animal kingdom, the good lookers seem to get away with murder!!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

DANGER! DANGER! Innocent lurkers and poppers beware DANGER! DANGER! OK folks I just installed a night lite. All these photos of Spawns of Satan are going to give me nightmares for sure. Victor that one actually has flying powers and Holly's pic is a good capture of them trancing you into thinking they're cute while they eat your garden. This is a very, very scarey thread. DANGER! DANGER!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Dahlianut, I just have too laugh. Your post reminds me of so many that I have made about my nemisis, the voles!!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Whew thanks for the support stormyla. Damien the Spawn of Satan Tree Rat has marked me for life.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Dahlianut, I planted over 1000 bulbs this fall, almost all except daffs in Permatil. So far I've only seen the squirrels bother 2 clumps of BlueBells. Now if only it works against the voles!!!!

I will take a tree rat but not the naked rat. I thought I had a nightmare with eggs.

eeeewwwww

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Eeeewwwww is right. My Voles don't look that bad but they are really my Nemisis. I think they killed a small Dogwood and every, that's every Tulip in my back yard. Is gone. I blame the Voles but Dahlianut could be right. Those Chippies may just have tranced me into believing it's its the Voles. LOL

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I've heard moving your satan spawn only leaves the void open for more. They are very territorial. Again - that's what I've heard.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Chippies here do not make tunnels everywhere. They make a burrow with a front door and a back door with a nice storage room for the winter food supply. The voles and field mice make extensive tunnels under the snow and ground and are the ones that eat the roots of plants all winter. A chippie can kill a tree if they make a air pocket around the roots of the tree but most large trees will no be damaged enough to die. The chippies load up all summer and spend the winter in their little condos and then come out again when spring and warmer temps return which I wish would be soon.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

What happens if they see their shadows ngam? Just wonderin cuz of NE groundhog fiasco this year.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I don't think they make false starts like their big cousins the GH does. They wait for the spring to be sprung to venture back into the world. I kinda feel like I am waiting for the same thing, and waiting and waiting...

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I have a vole killing machine at my house! Anyone want to rent my Holly cat? Her purrsonal best is 5 in one day.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

The crazy ole cat is too slow now to catch Damien. He does still give him a good chase every once in awhile though. I had alot voles in my cliff and gardens in Yellowknife NT. Bonkers disappeared them all in one summer.

South Hamilton, MA

When we have removed the hill supporting boards we can see long tunnels & the chips are the only ones in that hill. Maybe it is an old field mouse tunnel, but the chips are noticable. If they just sleep there it is ok.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Here's the reason for the leaping.
