stinkin' squirrel

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They have a way of picking out the $$ stuff, though.

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Some people spoil them, Victor.

Don't remind me, David!

Hey women wearing fur coats seem to have expensive tastes - my guess is that the same applies to the deer.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They're welcome to deer fur from my garden.^_^

Awesome Sherrie!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Cool! Never had bluejays and cardinals together like that.

Normally when the blue jays come, and the male card comes. Then they come one by one and the male cards will chase each other off. I WILL get a picture of all 7 cards togather if they come all at once again! And hopefully on a sunny day.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

jays usually take over here and push the others away - nice shot - 7 cards would be a nice shoot never more than 4 here.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

That is a really cool shot, Sherrie.

I have squirrels in my attic again! Only recently covered where they were getting in before. They are tenacious and stubborn.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

they can be destructive - i had them chew through eaves in my first house and at night it sounded like they were bowling - called an exterminator who came by a proceeded to tell me EXACTLY how to lock them out with chicken wire.

so i did it myself - i was finishing up at dusk and had to "shoot" them with staples to keep them away. then as night came they all went under an eave and formed a squirrel ball. the largest squirrel then ran up the roof and down chimney came back out went down and squeak squeaked to the other who all ran up the roof together about 8 in all, and down the chimney.

don't tell me they can't speak.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Did they bring gifts?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

so i ran inside the house and started a fire - did not open the flew the whole way - smoke filling the living room - opened the flew a little more, then again. still smoke. opened more and a dam squirrel landed on my arm. i am a big guy and i screamed like a little girl.
wife called the cops to come over and get it out of the house - i grabbed a hockey stick and my helmet just as they showed up - quickly ditched the helmet gave one cop another stick and his partner (a her) grabbed a box.
the dam thing charged me - had to keep the stick low because of the chandelier - so i went with a snap shot - shot the squirrel out of the dining room and it bounced off the radiator in living room. it came to its senses and charged me again it was unbelievable - the lady cop is screaming at me - the other one is laughing his head off standing to the side - second shot did the trick. no more squirrel.

classic story and true.

a week later the big squirrel chewed a new hole through the suffocate. then the real war started..........

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - that's a classic, Bill! When are you available? Or just send the hockey stick. Bobby Orr?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

rotfl....oh my goodness that is so funny Bill.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Mine have not done any damage in the past - at least none I saw. They have come to give birth.

South Hamilton, MA

Our chimney was capper against squirrels when reshingled several yrs. ago. This past fall metal was put oveer the place where they chewed to get in & the overhang closed off. Haven't heard them since but keep an ear open. Also some chemical squirrels don't like was added. DH says he then met one with a disgusted look on its face.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i left out the part when the squirrel landed on my arm i flinched and toused it across the room and it ended up under a chair my 2 year was sitting -

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And she didn't scream...

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

daughter did not scream - did make my ex go over and get the kid while it was opening windows to get rid of the smoke.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That explains the 'ex'.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

those squirrels did 4K worth of damage

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

not laughing at the monetary loss, but HOLY COW!!! You put Chevy Chase to shame!!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

the squirrels got in due to rot initially so it wasn't entirely their fault. they did become very aggressive about protecting their new digs. and they are smart - very smart, i begin bring in artillery to pick them off - it took them about one day to realize when i stepped in the yard they vacated the property until i left. we humans under estimate their supposed lack of brain power.
have had many good laughs retelling that incident.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They are very smart.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

another squirrel incident was in my current home - set up a bird feeder on the deck and red squirrels found it. was working in the yard and for a few hours all i heard was my wife running out on the deck to scare them off - banging pans with spoons - soon enough the red's began to hold their ground and began their red squirrel/spitting back at her.
wife got tired of this and brought the feeder inside. and then went off grocery shopping.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

later that afternoon i'm outside the house and thought i heard something inside. i come in the house through the basement, went upstairs and find the screen door chewed through and bird seed all over the floor and one very anxious red squirrel who can't figure how to get back outside.
i grabbed a broom and went after it - it was running all over the first floor - trying to go out clsoed windows - i thought i had it and barely missed, killing the cheap plastic broom. finally got it back into the great room and opened the screen door and brought the feeder outside.
squirrel followed a short time later.
then my wife came home and the fire works really started. somehow i ended up having to take care of bringing to screen door to the hardware store to repair.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL! You have some MEAN squirrels in Pepperell!
Andrew (golden retriever) almost got one yesterday - it couldn't run in the snow and he got it by the tail. It turned around to bite and the smart dog let go!
We've had a couple of the red squirrels this winter - very aggressive! They've chewed through the base of the squirrel baffle on the feeder. I have to go find some way to keep it on since it keeps slipping down now.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - this was a saga, Bill!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yes it was - could not believe she left the feeder leaning against the screen door - we have a lot of red squirrels and they get real upset, sit on a low branch and just scream at you - wife stands right there imitating them screaming back - funny to watch, she really gets into it sometimes.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Oh my gosh with the red hair maybe they have the irish temper.

South Hamilton, MA

We have a half-moon shaped baffle over the feeder & the edges is all jagged from squirrel chew, both red & grey probably. Because the old branch which held the feeder had to be cut, it is now on a new tree, far enough away from the trunk that they have not as yet made the jump.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

they can jump - once an alfa squirrel show it can been others will follow. i've double baffled the poles to keep them on the ground. surprised they have not taken their chances by jumping off the branch onto the top of the feeder.

South Hamilton, MA

Our used to come down the wire holding the feeder to the baffle, then slid off--heh heh heh.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

love it when they fail

South Hamilton, MA

Right!
