Threw 'em oh, probably about early to mid December ,lol. I 'll try to remember not to weed 'em - they're in my hosta bed, so it should be properly neglected....
Propagation part V based on my own experience
ROTFL Hope you don't have cats, LOL you may never know what happen to them.
Hey no problem on the hijack. I am kind of at a loss on where to head to next. Oh yea an amendment to the advise on pricing your plants based on cost per square foot. I was discussing this with DW and she said in my case I was over complicating it. as this is a hobby we will just track the expenses and sales and base the income or loss based on the figuire we arrive at after sales less expenses.
In my case I am only doing this as a hobby and even though a profit would be nice its not the focus of the business. hey theres a new one... an accountant not pushing for a business to be profitable.
Can I get a count on how many of us are doing sales to offset the outbound cash? I am just curious. Have a great night
Dave
Pagancat/Tilly, I have 4 different Hells and I am zone 5 bordering zone 4. I don't know if they are all the same. Mine are under ice and snow. As soon as the weight of the snow is off of them they start lifting their heads.
Jeanette
Howdy:
Quick poll .... who has what germinating and whats next?
I have tuberous dahlia mix germinating from seed... yea I know it sounds funny....
peony poppies and pampas grass are all poking their little heads up... saying here I am look at me....
265 days on hells... I don't know I am that patient.
Dave
'
Oh if I can put them out side I don't worry about it, I know they will eventually come up. Gotta get me some seed or a couple plants now. Thanks Tilly I knew you kept talking like you had them outside but wasn't sure if I was reading it right. LOL Sometimes when I read things it doesn't register with me.
Ha! You realise the gestation period for a human being is 266 days? LOL!
Okay, I've been germinating coleus - very successfully.
Also...
Salvia Blue Princess (?)- very successful
Yucca - a few have germinated, not many, but I'm still pretty pleased.
Trailing Vinca - good germination
Broccoli - did okay until I left it out all night... s'okay, it was too leggy, anyway.
Got a ton of seeds, just need to figure out what to do next. How early should I do tomatoes, any one know?
I have got coleus up but they aren't growing or at least it doesn't look like it, I sowed some glads and and some hostas yesterday and then some lithrop seed today.
I'm a zone 5er, but I wouldn't start tomato seeds until March at the earliest, and I always start too early!! April would probably be good. They grow really fast!
Pagan, you need to look on the package of each item and go by that. Everyone's area is different. I'm a 5er also and go along with what avianut said. LOL, I always start mine too soon also and end up starting a second planting and it always looks and produces much better than the first.
You are a zone 6 so probably March would be good for your tomatoes. You need to go by your last frost date. And don't rush them you have plenty of time.
Jeanette
Good advice, thanks!
I don't think I would remember to look for the hellbabies after 265 days! I forgot daylily seeds in the fridge once and they actually germinated in little bags of water.
Right now I have brugmansia and plumeria seeds germinating, and a big variety of seeds soaking that I will plant tomorrow.
Yes, I do sell some plants and seeds in order to "support my habit". I don't have a website, but I do sell on ebay and here on the market place. I was thinking about having a yard/plant sale this spring, but I am not sure if I will have anything besides brug and plumies that are big enough.
In my zone, i should actually be starting my garden peas and spinach outside and my broccoli and cabbage inside now. I will start tomatoes early next month and peppers shortly after that. I wasn't planning a big garden until DS told me that he would like to become a vegetarian. Now I am planning a much bigger garden. LOL
Hells are fun, set it and forget it LOL
but put them in pots frist, then you will know.
Dave, have you ever look on freeplants.com
shows how to make money, in your back yard. I have been watching and reading what he does, have not ordered the books I think we all can get that. but it is interesting.
http://freeplants.com/
HI:
Yea I watch the guy selling his system. even bought a striped down version of his system, so now hes sending me weekly emails trying to sell the rest of his system and then add on the growers boards. I am still in a holding pattern with him. most of the info is stuff we all have discussed here on the thread. he did send some contact info on different growers arround the usa. I wont promote his product but I wont slam it either it has pluses and some negatives. My thoughts were for less than $199.00 I can check it out and decide if its for me or not. so far I am still thinking about it. The growers boards look like a good possibility for some sales.
Tomatoes. I would be looking for mid to late february. if you get leggy tomatoes just plant them deeper. they put on roots off the stem. I am planning to start in march but thats because I will be out of town for e few weeks in lat feb-early march. I just have a problem trusting the niecees with watering.
Dave
Sorry if I sound a bit off tonight I have had an interesting week so I am kind of ummmm testy yea testy thats it... anyway I should be better tomorrow
Dave
Dave, thanks for the warning, I was just going to check it out. for sure I wouldn't be ordering anything but always like to read on how others are growing things. I might learn something. but usually if it sounds too good to be true. you know the rest, Jim
I have been to his website too and I like it, but I never have ordered it. I think if you watch the way he protects things he is rooting you can kind of design your own system that would work just as well.
Linda
Linda, jim you are oth right I was very curious and he offered a cheap trial so I thought what the hell. It can all be wroten out by the rest of us here on this link.
.... hey maybe we can set up a system and make a ton of money too...lol
Dave
That was my point, without buying his, but use it to make are own. He's got a geat thing going. But I'm not going to buy his books and things when i know I can do it myself, with help from my friends in sharing.
Just bad at making my point come across right.
Hey guys I don't know if you noticed it or not but if you go to that site and in the upper left hand side of the first page ,if you roll your mouse up there an catch the corner of the page, it will flip the page and gives a warning, better check it out. I found it by accident. I was running my mouse up there to click off of it and caught that corner and then is when it came up. See what you all think.
howdy:
I looked at all that stuff a long time ago. It was common sense most of us should know just from the visits to the local garden center. The big box stores wont be as on target as the nurseries. just look at what they have a ton of the same variety.
Tilly I do agree fully with you. it should be easy for us to do. any ideas on whats 1st in this new system? LOL
I am in the process of beefing my stock plants up so I have a lot more variety to choose from.
Dave
I just looked again ff. Don't see what you do. What is it?
Jeanette
Jeanette:
Its access to free data. just kind of move the mouse to the left hand corner of the inner page. It is worth a look.
dave
Sorry, I still don't get what you want me to see. I have looked at it 4 or 5 times.
There is an x in the corner of the page that is flipped over. Or do you mean the fact that it is an Ebook?
Jeanette
No, What I read was that they had your IP address and somthing about it was illegal. You have to get it to where you can hold the page so you can read it. It happens so fast that you don't notice it the first time but for some reason I caught it but had to go back several times to get a hold of it so I could read what it said. I don't know what it means so I scrambled to get off there.
I didn't see that either. I must have missed it too. My feeling is that most propagation information is public domain. It has been written about in countless books and magazines. The only thing I think he could possibly copyright is his ebook or maybe his business hints. I do know that long before I had internet and ever heard of Mike Mcgroarty, I sold plants from my driveway in a yard sale. That part is nothing new.
There are many methods of propagating different plants, so I don't believe that anyone could copyright a method.
I may be wrong though.
I don't know either but when that happened I didn't want any part of it. I don't want to get in trouble over something I didn't do on purpose just an accident.
Maybe he meant if you read his Ebook that he had your address to charge you for it. I think you are suppose to pay to copy those books. Not sure. You print them out rather than actually buying a book and having it sent to you. I think.
Jeanette
Hi: The ebooks are sent as attachments. they can be stored on the hard drive or printed. Most of the info is nothing new. I don't know how strong the patent is but I don't want to try and get around it. I think its all something we have discussed on this thread.
I am going to try to get the complete thread in a word document to share with everyone for reference. I have been going to do this for awhile. I guess I need to just do it.
Dave
Wow Dave, that sounds like a big job. If I can help I will.
Linda
Well that's wild I never even opened anything on there. Just that corner flipped over and then that warning. I didn't even know what was happening. Oh well done and over LOL.
Dave, do you mean you are going to buy it from him?
If you do that you still can't copy it and hand it out to the rest of us. If he has a copywrite on it that would be in violation of that copywrite law. I think.
Jeanette
way too many caveats to this one. I'm going to let it go. Jim
Janette: you are correct on the handing out of his materials. even if there is no issue with a copywrite. I would not do it just because its wrong. I used to be one that felt like its all fair to distribute others work, but I did a lot of thought and ai ended up on what would I do being in his position. Its just wrong and I feel karma has a way of setting things right and I think crossing that line would be a big mistake
Like I said the system has a lot of good websites to check out. My bigest fear is there will be another part to buy once I get past the next set of info. It feels like a never ending line of this to buy or that to add to the program. Its just my opinion so follow your own inner voice. I have found that my inner voice is rarely wrong.
Well look at the time.
More tomorrow Dave
Dave, you might ask Jim what he meant in his last post. He seems to have some opinions he is keeping to himself.
Jeanette
"... It feels like a never ending line of this to buy or that to add to the program..."
Yeah that's how I'm starting to feel about my greenhouse... sheesh.
Pagan, that's what happens with any hobby. There is always something new out there that you just have to have. Even if everything is working smoothly.
And every hobby is expensive. If it is a specialized product, it is going to cost a lot. Years ago a friend bought a boat. On the coast I might add, which meant salt water. Every screw he bought cost a couple of dollars 'cause it had to be brass so it wouldn't rust through.
Jeanette
Ouch!
Okay propogation afficianadoes (did I spell that correctly?) for those of us with limited funds and talent:
What are the 20 easiest plants to (1) grow from cuttings
and (2) grow from seeds?
Thanks in advance ^_^
hmmm easiest to grow.....
that is a tricky question. some may find other things easier than other. My list would have to start with pothos from cuttings
2. Coleus
3. verbena
4. sweadish ivy
5.lantana
Drawing blanks at the moment on the rest.
seed
1. marigolds
2. zinnia
3. tomato
4. salvia
5. bean (any variety)
It will be interesting to see others thoughts
Dave
