Hello everyone:
We came from here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/930965/#new
As with all of the threads I stat I like to welcome anyone new to our little corner of Daves Garden. Please take the time to read all the past threads. Most of them have some great information in them. There are no dumb questions except for the 1 thats never asked.
Please check in if you are continuing on from part IV. I like to make sure we did not loose anyone. I am still trying to put together the info from the threads into a word document so we all have something to look back on. I will try to edit out user namesbecause I don't want to worry about who is ok with using there name and who has an issue with it ... for what ever reason. I try to keep things on track and a nice calm slow paced thread that everyone can understand.
Welcome and thank you to the loyal readers on this thread
Dave
Propagation part V based on my own experience
I am here Dave. Have to follow there are so many interesting things on here to read or talk about.
Hi Dave. I'm here. We had a great loss of one of our members on PNW and one that is missing, hope to fine her, sent a Blast out. She is a good friend of mine, if all fells I will drive to her place, which is a long ride. for me.
Tilly I hope you find your friend. It gets scary when you don't hear or see someone that you are so use to seeing or talking to almost everyday and then suddenly you don't hear a word.
Thanks, I finally got her answering mach. after 4 calls. hope she calls me back or at least loges on.
But losing Robert, was a great loss to all of us on PNW.
It is sad to lose a good friend . There aren't really any words to help with the loss but I am so sorry.
Jim, I ordered my goodies tonight from Super Grow. Can't wait!!
Mary, sorry to hear about your friend. I am embarassed to ask you, but what was his username on DG? I wanted to pay my respects to him here.
Dave, I'm all ears, waiting for your valuable info. Thank you, by the way.
Dave, I'm here! Just debating what to order by way of growth stimulant. I assume from what you have said that you think it is worthwhile, rather than just using regular fertilizer? I hate making things too complicated, but would like some faster growth on some of my plants, esp. hostas!
From what I have found that the supergro root tonic would be good fro transplants and mixed in for cutting. ( I will have to double check the label on the root tonic for active ingreidents) This way will be a bit more steps but will cut down the cost of everything.
I ordered root tonic, grow tonic, micro maxx, gibberilic acid 3 and the fulvic acid with kelp extract. I also have some stuff coming in from a hydroponics outlet. all premixed and easy to follow. My questions are can I get better results mixing it up myself? it looks like it will be less expensive in bulk.
I ordered pirahana and terantula from the hydro store. they both have different combos of mychorhysa and other key growth stimulants. I am planning to do a test on 3 different ones. one with nothing but water, one with the multistep chemist routine and 0ne using the 2 prepackaged formulas. It will be interesting to watch them and see what happens.
The one thing you need to be aware of if you use any of the michorhyza products you need to use care and not use any fungicide on the plants. the fungicide will kill off the michorhyza. I do know from what I have read, the products all include a benificial fungi that will fight rhizoctonia, phytopthera and pythium. I am going off memory so I will have to reread the labels once they arrive. I will let you know what I am doing along with pics.
Dave
Dave, we are on the same wave length. I ordered the same things, plus the IBA, Compound amino acid plus fertilizer, and Triacantanol. I just ordered the small and the sample sizes.
I am tired. I just got back a while ago from helping sandbag at the Fire Station. MAJOR flooding in our little town.
Lynn:
I hope evrything stays dry. I will add your town to my prayers.
I will have to check out the iba and triacantanol. I spent too much money on the designer packaged root tonics. Please let us know how they work for you.
Dave
Thanks Dave, I was feeling bummed this am because we were without water and power for about 3 hrs, and I couldn't access DG. I was really ashamed of myself when I went to town and saw the devastation. Tomorrow I will go help with the sandbagging again, unless our road is closed.
I bought the triacantanol for my roses. I cannot remember why I ordered the IBA, because it is in the root tonic. Hmmm....what was I thinking?
Lynn, sent you mail.
Its ugly here, I have a creek at flooding stage, but will not come near the house I'm to high. But it will flood the road futher down, turn around go the other way. I worry more of the hill across the road. Mud slides, sand bags won't help me there. Went thru this in 1993 I think or close.
I thought last year was bad, with no spring. This SUCKS. LOL
Lynn, hang in there.
Mary, thank you. for the mail.
Will you be landlocked? The mudslide scares me more than the flooding. It seems (I may be wrong) that it happens so quickly.
If you need a place to stay, you are welcome here. I can come get you, DH, and all your little furbabies (and the Helle babies)
Lynn, you can use the IBA alone for dipping cuttings. or in the cloner. the NAA in the root tonic. makes more root hairs. Jim
Man, am I lost. I gotta go back and get my dictionary, a cup of coffee, and my brain and catch up. What I get for being gone a couple days. Sheesh.! lol
Lynn, I won't be landlocked by a flood, But Iif I get a slide I will be Home locked, only if it hits straight at the drive. Otherwise righ or left I can get out. at least I hope.
Stay safe.
Sorry all, did not mean to mess up the tread.
Hugs
hey no worries. mother nature takes controll some times I would rather us worry about the friends we have than be so riggid about staying on point. It makes me worry what if it was worse how would everyone handle the issues of no home or being stuck inside without food.
Please keep us informed. You are all in my prayers.
I wont be on until tomorrow. I had a shot this am and am sleeping the day away.
Dave
Mary, you could call up one of those Vikings in Poulsbo to rescue you. Jim
Stay safe, you two!!!
Jim , to funny LOL I was one of them a few years back. How are you faring?
All Is well, we are safe, Whats funny is we spent lots of $ on a generator for bad weather. this is the first bad one we have had since we got it, and only lost it a few hours. Times before the Gen. where 3 to 9 days without power and no power no water.
Check the plants in the GH after freeze and the light going out, I don't think I lost to many, they thaw out with the new light. That helped. I did lose my Fancy Geraniums, they where a zone denial plant in others words not for mine. I should have brought them in and I forgot. But that is all I can say I lost for now til spring.
Thanks for your support, Dave and all
Many years ago there were so called room humidifiers which sold for about $25.00. They vaporized air in an enclosed area. I used them for a while in a closed system which used ducts to drop the moistened air into a large chamber (3' x 4' x 4') beneath it. I also had flourescent lights above the chamber. I found the hunmidifier left a fine powder on the leaves of t5he rhododendrons I was trying to root. It was a very efficient system and I was able to root about
85 % of my cuttings. ( If you have tried rooting broad leaf rhododendron cuttings you would know that this is a very good percentage of cuttings rooted). Because of the availability of tissue culture plants I stopped using it, but am going to start again. One problem I have found is that although the cuttings rooted easily I had to put the cuttings in an outdoor cold frame for hardening off for a few months before I could pot them up and place them in the shaded bed I use to hold plants until they are able to withstand ordinary garden conditions. I still have the humidifier but I don't know if anyone sells it anymore. Perhaps an older type hardware store might still have some.
Hi everyone... sorry for the short silence. Unfortunately it will have to be a bit longer. health issues keep me from doing almost everything. We have a game plan and I should be closer to my old self hopefully in about a week. Its bloodpressure, sleep apnea and back issues all rolled into one. Anyone wanting to know morespecifics can contact me at Pughbear7@hotmail.com. I don't go into detail here because I try to keep it as based on plants as possible sorry for my personal issues.
Dave
Hi Everyone, I have missed you all. I finally got my computer back and can get online.
Dave, I hope you feel better real soon.
tillysrat, I am glad the flooding hasn 't homelocked you.
I have been busy starting lots of brugs and plumeria seeds this past week, I also need to get busy on my passies and daylilies.
if any of you have used gibberallic acid before for germintating seeds, did it work. I may order some and try it on my passies.
arfitz, are the humidifiers the same as those I put in my childs room when he was sick?
If so, you may be able to find one at a drug store. I may need to put that one out on my porch with all the plants too. Thanks for the reminder.
Good to be back, hope all is well with everyone and if not now that you will be better real fast.
Linda
Dave, get better soon, I felt bad after calling you, I know what it's like having ambitions and then getting sidelined will illnesses. I'm always fighting the lung issue. I tried to do some heavy lifting today and ended up resting more than working. I did get several things done despite not breathing well. Jim
Jim Don't worry about the call its no problem. I always enjoy hereing how things are progressing. Dr apt in am... hope to get to the bottom of all this. I have almost 200 different daylilies to sow and no energy to do it. You know there is an issue when you can't even sow seeds in prefilled flats. I did some up last time I had the time and a nice day. Nice day tomorrow high in the mid 50;s but rain at the end of the week.
Thank you everyone for the concern. I am sure we will get it under controll...
Dave
How long should it take daylilies to germinate? I had some on a heat mat, and I'm afraid they got too hot but I'm not sure. It's been 2 weeks and there is still no sign of life :-(
Aviannut, I am not sure, mine always came up real fast after I took them out of the refridgerator. ( we don't get enough cold for me to grow them outside). Sometimes they will even germinate in the cold water in the fridge.
I wouldn't give up yet though, you may just have some slow starters.
Linda
I think we are getting mixed up with Tissue Culture as I know it and Hydroponics and mist rooting. could we seperate these 2 things into different catagories in our replies?
Hi:
Aviannut: mine sometimes take a while. I soak mine overnight and then sow them in an unheated greenhouse. Acording to parks guide onseeds it should be between 3 and 7 weeks. I always just leve the ones that have not germinated in flats under a bench until the fall migration inside.
I do agree on trying to specify on hydroponics vs tc.
Dave
Dave, don't you refrigerate your daylily seeds? Maybe it is because we don't have enough cold, but in order for mine to germinate, I have to put them in a baggie of water and put them in the fridge for 3 weeks before I plant them. I have even had some germinate in the little baggie of Cold water!
Linda
Linda, would the seeds in a baggie with moist paper towel or moist soilless mix be just as effective? I'm just curious, not trying to but in. Jim
Hi Linda:
I have found I don't need to refridgerate my seeds I put out into the greenhouse. I have had to duck falling ice particles inside the GH. my pampas grass has started to germinate also. its kind of funny little whisker looking blades.
How is everyone doing. Jim are you haveing to deal with floods or is it blown way out of proportion as usual with the news? we had a negative wind chill this morning and a light dusting of snow. funny thing is it was in the 60's monday low tonight in single digits and back into the 50's tomorrow. I hate our rollercoaster weather.
Ok back on point:
I am not sure if I had chatted about this so please excuse me if I have covered it in the last thread.
One of the best and most overlooked sources of plant material to sell is our own garden excess. I realize most of us like to trade it off for more plants but if you find yourself with excess items and no trades available you might try selling the things we split in the spring. Canna's, ornamental grass's, daylilies, Hostas I am sure we all can add some to the list.
Don't get me wrong I like trading as much as the rest of us but there are times when no one wants to trade or I don't want to part with my last sprig of burmuda grass so I tend to go looking for it on ebay, market place on DG, the lilly auction I am sure there is a hosta auction somewhere, garage sales, farmers market down town on saturdays, flea markets, landscapers may be interested (if they know you have great plants and a better price than anywhere else) and selling to the local garden centers. most garden centers require a nursery license and some a tax id number (which I find dumb...if they are buying from you shouldn't they collect the tax???). You can use your social security number (I think ...check with your tax person) but who wants that floating around all over town.
Jim: would you please go over your technique on the tricks to using the powders. I know we have to mix in specific order and with the correct chemicals. I just don't want to blow up the kitchen...... Honest honey I don't know what happened. All I did was water the seeds and mix up some fertilizer. I think the fire department is done with their investigation. LOL
It's good to see you back on here Dave !!!! Don't mess with the DW she's might make you think twice about it the next time LOL
Dave, ask me specifically like how to mix up the rooting hormones. IBA uses Alcohol, NAA uses Acetone. they're basically the same proceedures that i have improved on over the years, either from some suggestions from the members or I thought of myself. when anyone goes to making up the hormones ask me again and I'll go through the protocol. Jim
Oh! and Dave, always add the mixture to the water not the other way around. allthough I don't think it would cause a fire. Jim
Jim,
I am sure it would probably be just as effective, I just haven't ever tried to germinate them that way.Normally I keep them in the little 2x3 zipper baggies in water and then into the refrigerator for 3 weeks. Last year I forgot some and they did germinate in the baggie. I am sure if you had the space, you could probably go ahead and sow them in the soil. I don't use paper towels because it took me twice as long for germination.
Dave, it has to be the cold factor. We just don't get enough to stimulate them I guess. Last week our temps were in the 60's and now they are in the 20's. Our wind chill was 10 degrees this morning. I know that is warmer than a alot of places, but for us, it is brutal! The ocean winds and moisture add to it too. I just sinks into you bones.
I haven't started as many seeds as normal this year, but i have plumeria and a few brugs germinating. woohoo!
Hope everyone has a good day, Linda
Hi :
Linda I agree about the combination of the salt air and cold mixing makes 30 degrees feel like 30 below. Its brutal. We get the temperature swings here too but we get a few weeks of super chill in the first few month's of the year. Take this week for example. it was in the 60's and 70's over the weekend but this week its been below freezing all week during the overnights and a few days have not goten out of the ice box. today the windchill was like 1 degree and we are already in the 40's It really messes with the body.
I have a bunch of seeds to get sown so its going to be tricky as to what I do get sown and what sits till I get to it.
Thank you to everyone for the encouraging words.
Dave
Okay I am not sure if I am in the right thread or not, but I have a Nelly Moser Clematis I would like to take cutting from. It says semi hardwood method. How do I do that. Simple english please. I am not a scientist or anything. Just want some cutting for Daves Gardens friends!!! Thanks for the help. Ronna
gl123, if you do get cuttings and get them started I would love to have a start. Would be glad to even pay you for it.
