What have you ordered for Spring 2009?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

great info thanks

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi Jan. You left out the Milk Chocolate daylily! It's a nice one.

Jo Ann - which clematis. I am not a fan of Plant Delights. I was treated horribly by them - more than once. Tony Avent has an ego the size of Alaska. They are always expensive.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Wow! Is it spring yet!! I see I'm not the only one with the planting bug biting at my heals.
Well, we ordered fruit trees from Adams County Nursery:
3-Libery Apple
2-Enterprise Apple
2-Galaxy Peento Peach
2-Saturn Peento Peach
2-Black Gold Cherry
1-Schmidts Cherry
2-Hedelfingen Cherry
1-Royalton Cherry
1-Regina Cherry
2-Olympic-Asian Pear
2-Yoinashi Asian Pear
2-Methley-Japanese Plum
2-Shiro Japanese Plum
1-Friar Japanese Plum

Now we are plotting where they are all going! They have a shipping date of 3/25.
And from Fedco:
Beans: Royal Burgundy Bush, Bush Blue Lake 274
Corn: Kandy Korn , Silver Queen, Dakota Black Popcorn
Peas: Oregon Sugar Pod II, Mammoth Melting Sugar Snow
Cukes: National Pickling, General Lee Slicing
Squash: Eight Ball, Paydon Acorn, Waltham
Pumpkin: Jarrahdale, Long Pie
Gourd: Tennessee Dancing
Carrot: Red Cored Chantenay, Atomic Red
Beet, Red Ace
Spinach, Space
Swiss Chard, Argentata
Brussels Sprouts, Oliver
Eggplant, PIngtung Long
Sunflower, Prado Red
I'm flipping through Bluestone to try and take advantage of some of their earlybird coupons!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - great list, Sue! Wish I had space for all those fruit trees.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I want an orchard, too!!!! :-)

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Wow! Are the fruit trees on dwarf rootstock or will they get big? You've planned well for cross pollination I see. This year will be the second for my first baby batch of trees. I'm hoping to get at least a little bit of fruit!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

We're scratching our heads abit on where we are planting. We live on a northern slope-the house is located at the bottom so I'm abit concerned about late frosts damaging blooms. Then there is an area which runs abit wet in the spring....The best spot is right where the deer graze in the upper hay field!
I'm thinking about locating either the plums or peaches in the front yard as it has a southern exposure and the north winds would be blocked. Yes, we built the house south to north instead of east to west!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My dream is to fill in my in-ground pool in a few years (when the kids are no longer interested) and make a combo veggie and fruit area.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

The apples are on dwarf stock. The customer service rep said they would come into production a couple of years sooner on the dwarf stock. Plus 12' is tall enough!
We are surrounded by Cedar trees so we had to get apples that are cedar apple rust resistant. There are so many varieties I would have loved to get but we don't want to be spraying if we can help it.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Sounds great Victor!
I visited a goat friend of mine a couple of weeks ago. She has about 12 fruit trees(apple & pear) in about the same size area of a pool. So you could make great use out of the area!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I could probably get more than that. It's a 20 X 40 pool plus the deck area.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Victor the clematis was the Stolwyjicks Gold.
I really jonsed for it but I simply cant go for $50. per plant .
I settled on a combination of
Viola
Reiman
Dr.Ruppel
for blue
Kiri te Kanawa

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Pool party at Victor's!! Only kidding! But I wish it was warm enough for one....

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Someone who also raises goats. Ahem, not someone who looks like or has the aroma of!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

got it :)

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

grampapa, I started a chocolate bed a few years ago. It may actually look like something this year. I can't wait to see yours. I anchored in last year with a shrub I saw in Victor's garden, Crepe Myrtle Lagerstroemia indica 'White Chocolate' I planted a lot of brown iris too last fall.

Here is a list of my first batch of seeds bought for this spring.

bush bean speedy
delphinium pacific hybid mixed
foxglove candy mountain
hollyhock antwerp mixed
mallow pirouette - malva moschata alba
night phlox -zaluzianskya
pansy envy
pumpkin mars f1 hybrid
sugar pea oregon sugar pod 11
sunflower velvet queen
sweet bell pepper mini belle mixed
tagetes starfire
wahlenbergia melton blue bird

Now off to look at the adams nursery site that Sue listed. Thanks, Patti

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Pixie, look at Garden Watchdog before you order shrubs from Parks. I don't much care for them, personally. They are OK for seeds, but I don't feel they are good for plants.

One of my favorites is Lazy S'S Farm.

http://www.lazyssfarm.com/index.html

Expensive on the shipping, but always good plants and packaged well.

I wish Garden Watchdog had a feature where you could post pictures of plants received. I think that would really help. Wonder if anyone has ever suggested that?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

pixie i will second lazy s i kordered from them last year and was happy. they also have a huge selection of virburnum and most are $9.95.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

PollyK, I would love that feature in watchdog. Great idea.

Wha, guess where I am off too. Their shipping prices always scared me off. But I need to get beyond that for a good viburnum. Plus they have such a fine list of other things too. Thanks to the both of you. I need to check out what Advant has this year and Fairweather too. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

patti - your doing what i've been doing it sounds like - i have my want list and i'm checking out several places for comparison. i did not think the shipping at lazy s was to crazy - not like forest farm. i still need to check advant - although my dad does not live far away so anything i order there will be a day trip in the spring. not ordered from fairweather although i have heard good things from VG.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm going to suggest it then, Patti. Probably already been discussed, but we'll see.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

OK, I suggested it on the Daves Garden thread. Anyone that thinks it's a good idea, please come over and voice your opinion.

Thomaston, CT

Ngam, you asked about plants ordered from Select Seeds---I've been ordering plants from them since they started, & have never been disappointed---the plants are always large, healthy, & well-packaged---I've ordered a lot of annual salvias, nicotiana, the African foxglove, etc. They are based here in CT so the plants don't have to travel far, but we're all close to it in the NE. Victor---we did just what you're thinking of--filled in our pool when our son graduated from college & moved to Boston for awhile---my garden used to be at the bottom of our very steep yard---this is so much easier, although I certainly don't get the exercise I used to---but no huffing or puffing, either! Thom---loved the DL site, but if I paid that much for a DL, I'd be up nights worrying about it!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Just got the Select Seeds catalog and spent an enjoyable hour circling everything I would like to buy. When totalled, it came to $125. Not bad. Good thing the credit card is frozen solid in the back of the freezer though....

Katye, that method of hilling the spuds with dry leaves sounds like a breeze. I haven't put a lot of though into growing potatoes, but I may just change my mind. We do eat a lot of them at my house, including the sweet kind, so I may do those as well.

Thom, I had to resist looking at your link to Kim's Daylilies. Don't know if I can resist in future looks at this thread. ^_^

Karen

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Nutsfordaylily, that is quite a list. I am still slogging through my left overs in my seed box and trying not to order many new ones. But you know I will. I got my Pinetree catalog and it looks good as does TS.

How come socks disappear and seed packets appear? I am going to have to double the size of my veggie patch this year and hop around on one sockless foot to take care of it.

Thom, I am still avoiding that site. You are bad. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's a lot of work, Karen!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Yeah, it is a lot of work. I think maybe I don't know what I'm getting into. Perhaps my ambition is more than I have time and energy for, but we will see. I'm looking forward to this gardening season, nevertheless.

Karen

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

karen what about the dills atlantic pumpkin seeds? i'm going to try to grow a big one. and leeks PT had the best $ on leek seeds.

just kidding - hope you have alot of space to start the seeds.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, I have toyed with the idea in my mind of growing a giant pumpkin. Might still do it yet, at that. Hmmmmm............

Karen

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Deb, thanks for the info on 'Vanguard'. It sure looks like a beauty.

Sue, OMG, you've ordered an entire orchard all at once! sounds wonderful.

Patti, come spring, I'll be looking forward to pics of your choc. garden.
V, I'll look for 'Milk Chocolate' dl

Karen, I wish I had your ambition (and space). I love your list. It has a lot of my favs.

pix, I'd stay away from Park's for plants, too, if I were you. although a lot of folks get some nice roses when they have their sale. Veggie plants are good, but not perennials & shrubs.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Robin thanks for the good report on plants from Select Seeds. Always good to have another reliable local supplier.
Wow you guys are getting the order bug big time. LOL I feel like my affliction is quite normal now. Looking forward to seeing pics and getting reports on all these goodies. Some of you have a lot of work ahead but just think of the fun and rewards when everything grows and blooms. I give some of you a ton of credit for your ambitious plans and having the energy to get it all done. A new year's wish for us all, getting all the plans and dreams to come true and time to enjoy the result. :)

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

There are a few of the, um, pricier items I purchased last year that I'm really, REALLY anxious about. Not that they didn't arrive healthy, but I know how much I paid for them, and how much overtime I worked to afford them...yikes. There are 2 hostas that I'm sitting on pins and needles waiting to come up, and there are 2 daylilies that I'm also sitting anxiously on...lol.

The only bad thing, I know how my mind works, and if all of the ones I splurged on last year come back, and come back healthy, I will justify spending moolah on something again. oye.

Not sure if any of you have ordered from Cherly yet, Cherlady on the Lily Auction, but I got about 25 Munson's from her last year, and she sent really nice sized double fans of everything, and through in a surprise or two! She's a really great seller to communicate with...She also loves to enable fellow hemaholics...lol.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

placed a few small orders today.

Pinetree Gardens - savoy king cabbage, lancelot leeks, dills atlantic pumpkin, foxglove dwarf red, elsei kelsey, and joe pye weed.

seeds of change - sparkler double marigold, rudbeckia gloriosa and double gold (prices were lower online than catalog)

jung seed - double click cosmos, geranium elka & birch double, lupine mix

if anyone has rudbeckia prarie glow i'd be willing to trade some of the two ordered above. select seed has this one, it was all i wanted to order and shipping was more than the seeds.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Lancelot leeks?!! Rumors from the Round Table?

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thom, all the daylilies I listed above, except for Michael's Sword, were ordered from Cheryl this year. I will probably end up adding more to that order as well. Michael's Sword was a very pricey one that I bought for my hybridizing program I'm starting.

Karen

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

not sure pretty stingy with the leeks at our table

usually plant 100 and get laughed at until there gone and then it's why didn't you plant more.
