another 1/3rd TaaDaaa
Caladiums plus a mixed bag 150 in all
lol
What have you ordered for Spring 2009?
Caladiums as well, JoAnn. Sounds like a good co-op.
I had never participated in one.
OMG
I was in shock when ,after I placed my order someone asked Bill how many bulbs in a 5pound mixture
The answer was 100-110
My friends will get nice presents from me, the ones who have spring BDays.
I'm thrilled.
LOL They do provide great color.
Caladiums:
10 Aaron
10 Florida Cardinal
10 White Queen
Canna's
Tangelo
Primrose Yellow
Tropical Sunrise
WOW Pixi cant wait to see your June July pictures.
I can already feel my back breaking...lol
Your young and strong.
You can do it.
celeste you certainly are off and ordering a lot of plants - you will be busy.
for me other than a couple large jm orders i am going to try and keep things in control. have just spent the morning going through catalogs and did not fold too many pages. really want to see what was planted new last year come up this year.
I have posted my new plants further up in this thread but just like you Bill, I am waiting to see what needs to be replaced before I order any more.
Do caladiums require full sun? I have a shady area I'm thinking of cultivating into something more interesting than it currently is....
Purchases so far this year are from Stark Bros. (a temporary bit of insanity - the credit card is now safely in the freezer until June at least!)
2 in 1 pie apple tree
2 in 1 pear tree
25 strawberry plants
strawberry tower & 25 strawberry plants.
This is in addition to several roses coming from Ashdown once it gets warmer...
:)
Deb
There are suntollerant varieties of caladiums but Bill says they all benefit from shade.Sounds perfect for your spot
I am about to make my list of seeds needed for 2009, but it won't be as inspired or long as Willie's or Pixie's.
I have ordered some caladiums from the coop, both sun tolerant ones, as well as ones for the shade. I have coop orders in for some perennials, glads, passion flowers, and a mess of pepper seeds. No new canna's this year as they stored well last and I assume I will have a ton this year to plant again.
I want to plant some fruit trees (cherry, pear and quince) as well as a magnolia, some winter berry and scotch broom.
Then there are new coleus to think about thanks to Ge1836 and dahlia's because of Nut.
I spy a smoke bush on ngam's list which we have been thinking about for a long time.
I want a couple more Viburnums (Victor's fault) and will probably plant another lilac or two due to Polly. Pirl has me seeing I that I should add more Japanese iris to the garden and try again to plant a mass of lupines. Boojum has me coveting everything that she grows so beautifully. Pixie, I am not even going to open any of your Me pictures. I have no more room for lilies and iris. I am going to ignore Thom's DL's too.
Wha sounds as if he is behaving, but I can't bare not to seek a JM 'shirazz' and a stone wall.
Too make matters worse and more expensive, I recently went to the Brooklyn Botanical garden and took notes on many specimen shrubs and trees that I need to research to see if I can plant any of them here.
I am in trouble unless the plant fairy arrives. Patti
If we are this nuts now what will it be like in March?
I never thought I was the obsessed type but I could be wrong.
I have a twofold theory about this ge1836 1) They are Rescues: If I do not buy them they will be thrown in a dumpster and die. 2) Medicinal Purposes: I MUST HAVE them or I will die. It's a large plantarian burden to carry but we shoulder on.

i have now go through the catalogs twice and put pen to paper (just lists - not orders). it is amazing how the exact same seeds differ in price from one catalog to another - then you're just about ready to dump the high priced catalog and what shows up is something not in the others. then you need to compare sizes of plants to make sure it is apples to apples. have to say i enjoyed going through them. tomorrow will be the real test. i'll at least be ordering leeks, cabbage, marigolds, cosmo's and some plants - nothing like last year.
btw - pinehill has some of the best prices of the catalogs i receive and i've been happy with the quality of seeds in the past.
Peppers are my new thing this year so I'm having way too much fun researching them to decide which ones to try. Any pepper fans? I am also going to try cosmos again this year after a hiatus. Aphid magnets in my garden. I'm going to try them in a different spot. Wha do you want some seed from my bronze marigolds. Short. Good self seeders and very prettiful. They do revert back to yellow but I deadhead everything that isn't bronze. Dmail me if so.
I have no new orders just some replacements coming from Bluestone I have tons of seeds I'll be trying this year. We'll see what happens, have some catalogs coming in and I'm getting that "itch"
dnut - thx for the offer. i have a bunch of seed heads of several types - just ordering one pkg for a just in case situation. i probably don't need to order them to tell the trurth.
> I never thought I was the obsessed type but I could be wrong.
*snort*
Lather, rinse, repeat...
This year I ordered 47 varieties of veggies (including 12 varieties of maters), 10 of herbs, 3 apple trees (3 varieties), 3 peach trees (1 variety), 2 cherry trees (2 varieties), 1 mulberry, 30 raspberry bushes (6 varieties), and a few assorted packets of flower seeds.
Ye gods.
Somebody stop me before my credit card (or my DH) has a meltdown!!!
what kind of chery trees did you order - i've been considering getting one.
Oops, you caught me...actually I'm still debating on the types of cherry tree, I need to call the company (Trees of Antiquity) tomorrow and chat with someone who knows more about this than I do (which would probably be anybody :) ). I'm also in zone 6a which is the upper limit for some varieties, and I have heavy soil. Right now I'm leaning towards Bing, Stella, and Lapins, depending on which root stock would be better for my climate and soil.
Who knows, I may just be fantasizing about actually being able to grow cherries here...but it keeps me going when it's cold as a witch's left patootie outside. :)
I would like to add more small fruit trees is possible too. Cherry is one.
I have four mature pear trees (they came with the property, unfortunately I have no idea what varieties they are) and unless there's a late frost they usually do anywhere from OK to splendidly--apparently they are one of the few fruit trees that does well in heavy soil.
I am looking at cherry trees too. I need ones to use for chutney and pies, but DH likes to sit outside and eat fresh cherries and spit seeds until he is sick. So I may need two kinds. Anyone know about them. Small or dwarf would be good. Also a pear tree for mostly cooking. Thanks, Patti
Patti, check out Trees of Antiquity www.treesofantiquity.com , they sell mostly apples but also have other fruit trees as well and they come highly rated.
here are the ones I picked in the co-op

I'm thinking about placing an order with Pinetree Garden Seeds in Maine. I'm thinking that whatever will do well in Maine should do well here. At least it would be hardy, anyhow.
Patti, your long post above made me laugh. Plant fairy! LOL! I need one of those myself. So many things on my wish list, but I don't have room for everything. Can't get many trees if I want to keep enough sun for my DL's.
Went through the Burpee catalog the last night and saw a bunch of stuff in there that I wanted. Help!!!!!!!!! I'm even thinking of getting veggies this year, and I haven't done veggie gardening in ages. Don't know where I'm gonna put everything yet. Was thinking of just putting in veggies here and there with my perennials. don't see why I couldn't. We'll see.
What, Victor, no comment on Phuggins mention of the witch's left patootie? I'm shocked!
Hmmmm...... Cherry trees sound like something I would like to grow if they come in dwarf size. Don't want anything big here. I do love cherries, and they are always so expensive in the store. Oops! Something else to add to that terribly long wish list of mine.
Karen
Phuggins - - That is one obscene tomatoe, looks like medical
problem to me.
When I was a girlm in the 30's my grandfather had Bing cherries, guess that makes them truely antiques.
We live in Z6a
I had to open up two browsers to do this...lol.
So far, this is just in DL's, I have the following coming:
Eye on America, Magic Filagree, Bengal Bay, Larger than Life (salter)
Forestlake Ragamuffin (harding)
Apoolodorus, Baronets Badge, Nile Plum, Renaissance Fair, Thais, Asian Pheasant, Ruffled Lemon Piping (all Munson's)
Tigers Eye
Fancy Face, Ballerina Beautiful, Triangular Tricksy (carpenter)
Elegant Candy
Argyle Socks
Laura Harwood
Wisteria
Steve Trimmer (trimmer)
Uppercrust Society
Ornamental Focus
Mokan Butterfly
Adamas (stamile)
Chief Four Fingers (roberts)
Mildred Mitchel (mitchel)
Garms Dream (Olson)
Raptor Rap (lambertson)
Catcher in the Eye
Starry Eyed Piranha, Jaguar Smile(McCuthceon)
The last two were my DL "splurges" for the year. I may have a few other splurges, but these last two definitely bit into the DL budget...lol.
OMG You really do like DL's
Thats quite a list.Love to see pictures this summer.
i usually look for fruit trees at either Stark bro's
www.starkbros.com
or from Miller Nurseries
www.millernurseries.com
i've had success with buying from both although i am leaning towards stark bro's right now. my neighbors planted several apple trees they purchased at the end of the year, bought at a reputable nursery (Mahoney's). i had just planted a plum and dwarf granny smith from stark. thier trees were bigger and guess what - the mahoney's trees all had stark bro's labels. as these were bought at the nursery they were also larger.
btw both places have dwarf varieties.
Oh my Thom....we are really getting carried away again this year huh? lol Your going to love 'Laura Harwood'!!
I'm trying (very hard) to be good about buying more DL's.....counted to 300 and decided I need to put the brakes on.
This is all i've ordered and most of them because the amount of fans vs money made it to hard to pass up!
'Crimson Edging' 1 fan
'Westbourne Visions' 3 fans
'Fancy Face' 4 fans
'Forbidden Fantasy' 7 fans
Miller Bros is just about 20 miles from me on Canandaigua Lake, really beautiful drive if you ever get up that way.
OMG, you guys are ordering for spring already?? wow, you really are gardeners! of course, spring is closer for you than for me. I'm not yet inspired to think about digging holes yet :)
Pixie - Have you ordered from Park Seed before? You like their shrubs? I need to add a bunch next year for my "next round" in the back. I think I'll be wanting smaller shrubs than the local nurseries provide - easier to handle and dig!
Oh my what a nice list of DLs Thom and Celeste are getting. I don't feel so guilty for adding a few more things from WFF. I like to give all the venders a contribution, some more than others.
coreopsis 'Sienna Sunset'
phlox divaricata 'Blue Moon' that was found in Ma. so couldn't pass that up to go with the purple one I already have.
and an old stand by russian sage Perovskia atriplicifolia
There are more that I would like but I think that is it for now. Also put in the Bluestone order so took the 15% discount on that. This cold snowy weather doesn't help with the self control at all does it. I do love seeing all the goodies everyone is getting even though my wish list gets longer with every post. Off to check out some of those DLs listed now, but I will stay strong.
