Tropical Garden #27

Red Oak, TX

Good Morning All
This is the first bloom of a purple firespike from candela. I tried to compare it with pictures of phughes purple firespike, but they don't look the same.
It does not photograph well either, it is a light purple, very delicate looking bloom.

That is beautiful! I love sitting here drinking my coffee and looking at these beautiful pictures of plants I have never heard of... by the way, Tropicman said he ate hhis own bananas all summer.. he had to chop it down and dig it up to move to the green house.. 300 lbs! I saw some fuschia christmas cactus at the little store up the street on managers special so am going to go get me one for my kitchen window.. this picture is of my Garden heaven last year.. can't wait to do another this year! This is august 31st, looking south... my brugs are going to be the stars this year as well as the tropicals I have collected all this past couple months.. I am so ready for spring! Maybe my new plumerias will get as big as the ones I saw last summer..

Hmm, mabe I should keep some bananas in the green house all year around, or mabe make a banana hut cold frame or something.

Is it spring yet?! Was a rather warm week last week, but have had our weekly cold front push it out yesterday...I guess it was that warm weather that's creating havoc up north now. It was pretty powerful wind blowing through here.

Glad the articles are enjoyed. I'm trying to figure out why I'm even doing it at the moment.

Rob, I use to stand in the Kavala river in Northern Liberia, which was a part of the border between Liberia and Ivory Coast. What are they calling that country these days?
- I also found out the critter munching the buds on the Solandra...have a teenager possum prowling..have busted him climbing the vines, and I've seen him every night all over the garden eating Datura seeds, and Papaya.

Any blue showing on the blue sage Rita.

joeswife, I also love to drink coffee and check the gardening sites in the mornings, my favorite time of the day.
300lb, Topicman must be a very strong man. I am glad that he got to enjoy the fruits of his labor, home grown bananas, YumYum
I love your garden, I can see that you like coleus, vines, and your brugs.will make it exceptionally beautiful next year.
Did you buy that fuschia Christmas Catcus?

Rj, you write those articles because you are good at it and we enjoy reading every one of them.
I can see a little blue showing on the sage, any day now I will be showing it off big time.

Beautiful pics, everyone!

Rita, what a gorgeous place, where did you grow up?

Rj, I looked on the map and saw exactly the region you talked about! I used to live in Abidjan, but travelled with school throughout the country ( I was 10, how did my parents let that happen, lol?!). It's still called Cote d'Ivoire.

I can't believe you have a possum eating your solandra buds, ahah! Don't let it, give it something else to eat if you feel bad about it! ; )

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

That's a beautiful brug color Rita..

I know, but it's too lat Rob, it's snacked it all up..and all that time I waited..The possum is only about 10 inches long, so he can climb up things that adults can't. The worse part is my cat just looks at him when he walks by.

I've been to Abidjan in the late 70's, was so impressed with their Highways at the time as Liberia lacked such infrastructure then.

I'm going to Fairchild the next time the zone9 guys go!

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

I would recommend that you go during the cooler months of the year, not enough shade there in the summer.

LOL...I'm from Houston..I can take it

Dallas, TX

RJ, If you do go to Fairchild Gardens plan on spending all day. As it will take a day to see it all. Do'tn forget your camera with fresh batteries. The last time i went i only had my old film camera.I used about six rolls of 36 exposure film. My new Nikon with 2gb i can take about 650 pictures. Then you can delete all of them and start over again and again and never have to buy another one. Jerry

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

you forgot an empty suitcase!

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

Backpack is less obvious. And carry something in it, like bottled water.

That's a great photo Dale, thanks.
Hopefully I'll go to Fairchild when it is cooler..and the advantage of going with the guys from zone9 is they have the wholesale thing going on. I hear plants are still pricey even then.

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

Prices are low if you go to a wholesaler, but, selection is not large. The places around Homestead are cheap. It probably won't matter to you since our common plants maybe unusual for you.

A specialty nursery is gonna cost you. Places like Boynton Botanicals or Palm Hammock are not wholesale. If you have a sales tax permit you can get a modest discount. Their big plus is that they have rare plants, plants you won't find anywhere else.
