CLOSED: Fall Piggy Swap #11

tcs, it sounds like you have a beautiful plan in your mind. I am awful at planning stuff I always end up just putting stuf where i have room and then move it 3 er 4 times. : )

I want pineapple sage but I don't think I'll ever see a flower from one : ( I've bought plants in spring twice now and never saw a flower. I tried overwintering one and it died. I have three dead ones outside that maybe I could still dig up and see if I can bring back to life under gro lights. It might have already gotten too cold for them though.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I edited my list and put a couple things that weren't on there before so take a peaksy and lmk if you want anything : ) I want to get this in the morning by tomorrowevening so you don't have much time.... Hurry up and oink if you feel you haven't oinked enough : ) lol http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=5892184

Happy Birthday Heavenscent !!

Thanks all I really had a blast in that snow. I felt like a little girl. I won't know about the plumeria for a while. I hope they are ok but had fun anyway. I had a blast. I have just had them a lot of years and still waiting for them to bloom. I feel like I bloomed in the snow. It was so wonderful. I don't care what my neighbors thought. If anything I bet they wish they could be so free to do stuff like that. I kept thinking I was going to do it and I just ran back out and did it. :o) Now I have no regrets it melted and I didn't do it. :o)

I have 2 snow balls in the freezer. I think this is only our 3rd snow to stick on the 30 yrs I have been here. Beautiful. Maybe I will put them on ebay. hehe

Meridith.. Don't know if you've sealed yoru box yet or not, but Canna Girl posted this on the bottom of the list thread yesterday, not sure if she sent ya dmail or not.

"Meredith, If you still have these I would like to get tagged:
Great Blue Lobelia
Anise Hyssop
Lilium Michaganese
Obedient pinkish/purple/white
Button Blazing Star
Thanks again!"

ILoveJesus wil add to yoru list.

Meridith. They normally do not even start blooming until the end of september october and november. They late bloomers. They also go dormant for the winter. They wil put up new shoot sin the spring. Soem may come up right next to the old plants and some may come up a bit further away. Roots travel under the soil a bit. They are also very sklow to come up and need real warm temps befoe they even think about sprouting.

Mornin' all.

It's been a day or 2 since I've had the time to pop onto DG and I see you're all as busy as ever. I had to chuckle when I saw all of the piggies from last year commenting on showing restraint this year. I tried too, and I do think I did better than last year, but I have a feeling I've still got more coming than I'd anticipated. I even passed on a few things that I KNOW I'd like to try, but I'll shoot for it next year instead. There is only so much time in a summer and so much dirt in my yard!

I've not been over to the Cottage Forum thread since this madness began and I'm sure I've missed a ton of good info over there and more than a few giggles at some of your stories. Hopefully after the holidays I can catch up on some of that great reading!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Nope I haven't sealed it up yet. I just got up because I was up so late doing seeds last night : ) I have no edits left right now but I will get those to Canagirl. I'm going to get them ready now.
Re the pineapple sage - Thank you star, we get frost about mid october so it must be to short of a growing season here, I love it even just as an herb. I just wish I could get seeds so I could start them myself every year instead of buying new plants. This coming spring I am going to try ordering one from lazyssfarm - they sell it in quart pots - so if I don't see a flower from one that large, then I probably never will. I noticed someone else in new england posted that they have the same experience of not getting flowers, so I think it just isn't hot enough - long enough here. It's the second comment down http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1913/

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Hi lala : ) Yes we veteran piggies are trying so hard not to fill up at the trough but it is so hard with all the offerings : )
Oinkers!

hi all
it looks like we are going to hole up here at home for awhile..no trips to town..everything is blanketed in white and frozen. DH and i are taking turns to be up all hours to keep the water pipes flowing. This frigid weather is supposed to last at least a week and maybe more snow later on. We have not had anything like this in a while. So i may even be late in sending in my seeds and will go to the pos toffice when we can.

happy belated birthday heavinscent :))

Happy belated birthday Heavinscent!! Hope it was great!

I kept a separate document of everything folks asked for, but didn't keep track of what I asked for - I'm like Star and will just be tickled and surprised with anything that comes :)

I haven't made it by Wallyworld to pick up the plastic envies yet, glad you warned me, I would have stood there and wondered what the heck was going on.

OK, getting everything stashed to go out the door today to you Star!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Pamsue hope everything stays well there. It would be awful to have your pipes burst on you : (

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I made a list of things on peoples wishlists that sounded like I could send them something they liked but now I can't find it anywhere! The only name I remember was singingwolf - I know there were a couple others but I can't find my list!

Singingwolf if you are out there - ask me for something if you want anything. I saw monarda, scabiosa and anise mint - I have these so don't be shy if you want them ; )

Flora, IN(Zone 5a)

Making a final review of all the seeds and should get them in the mail today.
We have ice here also , I thought my DH was gone when the door opened this morning (around 8:00) and he said he just spent the last 20 min. trying to clear a1/4'' ice off the windshield.
Keep warm all and think of a beautiful spring.^_^

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

PamSue... And anybody else. DO NOT BE TRYING TO DRIVE TO PO IN BAD WEATHER!!!!!!!

So what if nobody gets their stuff til the middle of January. Then so be it, peoples health is more important.

We not in any big rush.

PamSue. I hoep yoru pipes don't freeze. Everytime the weather gets to 30 here I have to start drippign all the pipes all night. I turn em on so that they stay just a small steady trickle and put wash cloth down by the drain , not coverign th ehole, and that helps ya keep from heaign the water drip. I spend about two months dripping pipes all night. Miss a night and it froze pipes or burst pipes. Not fun.

Meridith. Remind in spring, cuz I wil forget. I wil send ya a plant or two of it. Mine will already be growing good when ya get it and that way maybe you can finally see some blooms. : )

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

Thank you LeBug!! Meredith and I will have to trade notes on trying to get this pineapple sage to bloom. If there are enough seeds LeBug, throw some in her box too....I'll share. I'm thinking that if we start them in early spring under grow lights, we might get lucky with the blooms. :-)

Meredith, did all your obedient seeds get oinked up? I'd love some if not. Oinks!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

My son could not get into his car.... he could start it [remote start] but all the doors were frozen shut.

regarding pipes.... do you insulate them? That should help from them freezing .... i'd think as long as where ever your pipes are, as long as that is not below 32°

OH -- Ella, you probably do not have a basement.... so yours are probably more exposed.

Our old house, we had baseboard heat ... so the few times we lost power .... DH would use the generator and crank up the furnace to keep the basement warm enough so those pipes wouldnt freeze.... in the 12 yrs we were there, i think we only lost heat/power once in the winter.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey Chele,

If Meredith is out of obediant plant seeds, I sent some extras to Ella in my package. You could probably get some of those if you want light purple colored blooms.

Tonya

hi
No basement..and we have well water. Our weather is usually mild in winter but once in awhile it gets cold. Most houses out here do not have basements.

GA, GA(Zone 7b)

Regarding the blooming of Pineapple sage, it needs warm, short days and long night nights to initiate bloom. Here is zone 7b/8 we only get blooms in very late fall, a few weeks before cold weather hits.

The variety of Pineapple sage called 'Honey Melon' is supposed to stay shorter and start blooming in summer. I bought one from Bluestone last year when visiting family. Unfortunatley, it was still winter and it didn't survive inside so I can't tell you how it performed. I don't think it had enough light where it was. :(

I plan to try it again in the future and it may be the one you want to try for blooms.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Meredith I just looked those 'Button Blazing Star' up and those little flowers are really neat, save some seeds for next year for me lol I really can't ask for more for this year but I would love to try those for next year lol It's hard holding back on seeds! I don't like it one bit but I would never get all that I really wanted from this swap planted so it's best, that's what I keep telling myself anyway :)

When I found those pineapple seeds there were two trades so there will be enough for both of you, Meredith and Chele, I just need to find them again and get these seeds out today sounds like we are going to get some icy and snowy weather here in the next day or two too!

My pineapple sage plants didn't bloom right away the first year I planted them either but I didn't have them in full sun, I planted them in full sun this year and had no problem with them, I hope they bloom for you! Even the reseeders bloomed for about a month before it got too cold for them so hang in there girls and maybe this will be the year for you! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :)

GA, GA(Zone 7b)

re pineapple sage,
I think it really depends on the variety. I've had one as a perennial for at least 5 years and it never blooms until really late fall. It's in full, southern sun so there's no lack of light!

Flora, IN(Zone 5a)

I have grown pineapple sage for years and was always disappointed that it bloomed so late so I switched to Lady in red salvia . The blooms are almost the same it is easy to start from seed (even reseeds itself here) stays smaller but blooms it's head off. I know it doesn't smell the same, but, the humming birds love it so much they try to fight with me when I am weeding that area.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I got some pineapple sage from LeBug last year, and put it in a container and on the north side of my tomato plants. They both bloomed like mad - but then they both were sheltered from a lot of very direct sunlight. I got a few seeds from it, enough to start some for me, but wasn't able to get more. I'm keepin' my fingers crossed that the ones I start this year do as well as LeBug's!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Robin did you notice they didn't smell a lot when you crushed the leaves, the ones I started from purchased seeds smelled more like pineapple for some reason. Has anyone else noticed that or is it just me?

I found the seeds I had left from last year so I put them in your envelopes chele and Meredith :)

I'm packing seeds and on my way to the PO here pretty soon :)

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

Thanks LeBug!!! Hugs!

Hi Everyone -

Finally, the term is almost over and I can read the threads in detail. Happy Belated Birthday, Heavenscent!

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Update. Maillady just came and PerenniallyMe your seeds arrived and

Tuink. One big box arrived today from you.

LOl. The piggy piles are stackign up. Looking good!!!!!!! : )

The thign with the Pinapple sage is the reason it is the last thign usually to bloom is because it provides a last bunch of nectar for the hummingbirds before they start to head south and warmer pastures. Usually whenevrthign else is dying or puckered out the Pineaple sage wil start to come into its own and provide food and color when many other things are no longer available.

GA, GA(Zone 7b)

Yep, It's native to Mexico and blooms through the winter months there feeding the hummers that are overwintering there. Many salvias are native to that region and that's why so many of them wait so late to bloom for us. They really want to bloom through the winter but it just gets too cold up here for them. They just get started blooming and then get frozen. :(

My seeds are on the way :)

Welcome back Seandor! :)

Now I need to start doing some of the things I have gotten behind on in the house lol

We have a winter storm watch out for this evening, it was starting to sleet when I got home, we have a mixture of rain, sleet and snow coming tonite, sounds like fun doesn't it lol

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Lea -- we got that over night.... rain then sleet - a bit of snow too... but outside everything is just crunchy. [about 95% of our snow melted yesterday with the warm temps.] expecting snow tomorrow.... but at least when it snows, it's a bit warmer... it's only 10 frigid degrees now. Brrrrrrrrrr.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

It's 20 here lol Just gotta love these warm temps lol I'm staying in that's for sure, I have a hair appointment Wed. I may just have to go with gray or a while lol Our temps aren't suppose to warm up any I don't think with everything going on haven't gotten to see what the temps are for the next few days, I tend to stay away from the weather more in the winter though I don't like what they say I figure if I ignor them they willl go away LOL

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Well that whole "they come from Mexico" thing certainly explains a lot. Mine looked gorgeous up until the first hard frost nailed them. And you're right Lea, mine didn't really smell like pineapple, but what the heck. I think they're a great alternative to the Lady in Red, as my Pineapple didn't get as big.

My box is nearly ready to go - except it took me too long to get it together so I missed going to the PO today. No, I didn't start putting seeds in envies as people asked for them, I just waited until today and sat down with my list and seed boxes and starting pulling and such. Not sure if that was the wisest way to handle it, but Oh Well..... (yeah, my head is still having trouble getting used to this without running over to Suzy's - LOL!)

congrats Seandor, glad you're able to take a breather in between terms :)
