Ice Storm Pictures

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Yikes, Bill! We'd be in the same boat if we were up there!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes you can set your clock by me!

2:20 AM the lights came back on. Dog barked and I looked up the driveway and saw a truck. ELECTRIC!!!! Took that guy/gal 5 minutes as it must of been a trip switch...

Now I get to take a shower..............Ninny is Backkkkkk :-)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yay for Sherrie!! Enjoy that shower!

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

Wow, I had no idea it was so bad for so many. I may be far from everything being up here in North Country, but I think we miss a lot of these bad storms that you southern folks get. (we do get some, but whenever you guys get a bad one we seem to be fine) Man I feel lucky.

Good luck to all!!

SongsofJoy - bet she is in a demolish zone.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Hope today is your day Bill! Congrats to Sherrie for her return to heat and hot water. Hope anyone still waiting gets good news soon too.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Wow, hope everything is back to "normal" for all you guys soon.
Pixie that sunrise pic is AWESOME.
Bill, that hickory wood be great wood for the smoker.
ooooo, I don't know if I want to see Songsofjoy damage

When will they learn to put the utilities underground???

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

I would think burying the utilities would cost a fortune. Just about everywhere around here has above ground lines, and only in newer neighborhoods are they underground. Just too many to do.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Wouldn't it be cheaper than having to fix it after every storm and pay all that overtime.

If a tree root grew through a line how would you find it quick? You would have to dig.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I've never heard of that happening, it's installed in conduit

I dont know how its done. I know it can happen to septic system especially the leech field.

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

I believe that is because of the nutrients coming from the septic, &/or the moisture

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Hi everyone!

We still do not have power, but a kind friend loaned us a generator, so the freezer and one power strip is lit up and running.

Here are a few things I am thankful for:
1) Gregg & Anna decided to put in a woodstove this summer.
2) We got wood for free in return for clearing the top of a hill
3) We have a propane stove in the kitchen
4) Our town just finished building an emergency shelter this summer where we can go and get fresh water and a hot shower
5) I have always insisted we keep fresh batteries, fresh water, canned foods, and a hand-crank can opener handy
6) We have a cooler that would fit only in the back of a pick up truck it's so large
7) Our freezer is a commercial grade tall one, and even after five days, everything in it is still solid
8) Gregg has insulated most of the downstairs portion of the house, in fact had just finished up the dining room portion earlier in the week
9) We have a well in the basement that we can use to haul water upstairs to flush the toilets!

And, I am grateful for all of my DG friends. I will begin another thread soon as Sammi went out on Friday and got some fantastic photos that she said I could share with you all.

We are fine. We are healthy. We are eating and cooking well. We are warm.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Great to hear from you, Candyce! Hopefully you'll be back to normal soon.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I hope so too!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hooray!!! you are fine. Now, we are waiting for a few more to report in - is that correct?

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Yes. We are waiting for a significant number of us to report in. I hope everyone's OK.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, Liza & John I believe are in one of the hard hit area's along with SongsofJoy

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

kdcon lives in alfred, Maine....his was one of the first place's in Maine to loose power. He lost it on Thursday before 10pm...there was 487 out in his town by the time the 11 o'clock news came on. He has a generator though so he should be OK..

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Are parts of Maine still out?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

It is good to hear from you Candyce, glad to hear you are all well and were well prepared. Hope they get the mess cleaned up soon and get the juice on for all of you up there.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes Victor there are parts still without power here.
Has anyone seen Grampapa(Jan) post?? Or Eleanor? I know Glenville area was without power at one point, not sure if that meant Glen Falls too.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

day 6 not! we have power!
wife got home from work and sat in the car watching me chop up the hickory as dusk was coming - i had decided only two more fill-ups to the chain saw and we would head off to our third marriott on the second fill up the lights came on!

spent the moring raking up all the white pine mess before the snow hits - glad i did as we should have 4" tomorrow and more this weekend. can cut up the rest tomorrow - mostly the 3 to 4 foot wide base. Have already broke on chain and had to run around to three stores before i found one - got two just in case. my little 16" will be doing double duty.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Glad to hear you are well, Candyce. I hope you get your power back soon. I think my friend Karen may want to think twice now about living up there. When we were there in Oct. she kept saying she would like to live up there.

Karen

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I'm very happy for you, Bill! Woo hoo! It's nice you can sleep in the comfort of your own home now. Don't have to use up anymore of those points.

Karen

Great news Bill!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Hi everybody. We were Ok up here! We were just north of all of the power outages. The Albany area was hit hard with ice and they still have some outages down there. My posting is limited because of Colin - I spend a lot of time working with him and by naptime I'm ready to crash too!! Hope the ones without power get it back on soon. This pic was taken Saturday, so you can see it was not bad at all up here. This was the pretty winter-wonderland ice!! Eleanor

Bill, I think that I mentioned this in another thread. But, if everywhere is out of chains, or yours get eaten by the Hickory and there is a saw shop around, they can fix broken chains and grind them fairly quickly and it's usually cheap. In many cases, those places that call themselves... small parts shops, or that do work on small engine type things (repair lawnmowers, weedeaters, etc. ) can do that stuff as well.

Glad that all is well in your area Grammyphoeb!

I did not have to get up and fill the fire place. I did not have to get dressed and go out and fill the generators with gas. I did not have to sit in the dark and twittle my thumbs...........My 1st good nights sleep since last Thursday. I am back to normal.

Hope you all get your lights back on as it can be tedious!

My DH files his chains. Hes done it all his life. It seems many folks cant sharpen the chains like he does. Hes very picky with his chainsaw. He has to have a specific file. He tried to show me the other day how he goes straight and then rolls the file under - DUH Dont show me that as it wont happen. He will only use an Oregon chain (pays more $ ) but that is what he wants. He says it stays sharper and last a lot longer. 2nd chain would use would be a Stihl. Of course if you hit nails, rocks or dig dirt it gets dull.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Schicken... I'm the same way. To the point of being called compulsive :-p That's how I had to learn it for one of my jobs. At work, we have all that stuff .... for the Work saws. The right file for the right chain, the right angle and with just a little bit of a twist! But, once it has become a "bad chain" the only savior is the grinder, that's at work too. Your DH has good judgement in the brand of Saw as well!!!

Unfortunately, at home I have one file, one chain, a little patience and nothing else! I just figure that I'm helping to support the local economy! And it really is cheap. $5 - 12.

I forgot to mention.... I'm glad that things are finally getting back to normal for you. what a relief that must be.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh Eleanor I'm so glad your alright!! Thank you for checking in.
Say Hi to Colin for me and Merry Christmas!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Happy to hear, Eleanor!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

sounds like your hubby just uses the file. i have a file set in a piece of metal with the proper angle shown to idiot proof sharpening - can't do the little twist at the end - i might do a little shimmy if it comes out sharp though - lol. i am also using the oregon chains.
oh well off to finish the rest of this beast in the snow.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Can you put a better chain on a bad saw?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Saw that grampapa (Jan) posted over on seeds just 2 days ago so I guess we can take her off the M.I.A. list.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Great. Who's left?
