this coral bark maple lost one of its three main branches - it is up now after surgery

i am hoping that this tree wrap will work - i'll keep it on for a couple years as long as the branch shows signs of life. lesson learned here though to tie the branches together for winter.

i - use to have - four or five 100 ft white oaks back by the pond - two fell like this - the ground just too saturated.

in this picture is five new additions (4 - jm's and a smoke bush) that somehow survived! they are next to a batch of white pines that missed - thank god!

we were up all night long - literally - when a branch went it sounded like a gun shot - some hit the ground hard.

this - we think - is the reason we have no electric. Verizon and nat'l grid did a drive by when i was out cleaning up today - almost thought to hold them with chain saw in hand until they finished the job. instead they drove off.

Wow - some serious damage there, Bill! Glad you're okay and no people or your house were affected. Shrubs and trees can be replaced. Count your blessings! Amazing that the big one fell between the nice new trees!

Beautiful pics, Celeste. Too bad we know what it represents. Glad you're okay and back on already.

My best to those we have not heard from yet.

It was so hard on all the tree's...my Hack has branches frozen to the ground. One large branch is very high up and is dangling it needs to come down as it's a danger.

we have a lot of very tall pines and hickories near our house that could fall on our home. this could have been a lot worse. glad we weren't like this pic!!

Wow what pics you guys. Glad everyone is okay. Half of our town lost power because of the high winds knocking down trees. Only was off for 5-6 hours and mine just flickered but never went out. No where near the damage you have Bill. The electric co. workers are doing a tremendous job, big thanks for the job they do in usually very nasty conditions. Still many people without heat in this cold weather. They say the burst pipes from freezing could do more damage if people didn't shut off their water and drain the lines in time. At least the next couple of days it is supposed to warm up a bit.

Just looked at the second half of your pics Bill. Your poor feeder, ouch. That old hickory tree will be fun to split. Isn't that wood a real killer to split for firewood? We have a lot of 100-150 foot white pines and oaks around here too so I know what you mean. There are two really tall pines half way down the drive that are in low land wet area that were swaying a couple feet in each direction. I keep telling DH to call the tree guy to get them down before they fall down over the power lines. All night I could here creaks and snaps out in the woods. I hate it when you can't see what is breaking but can hear it and know its not too far away. I love those coral bark maples. I hope the other one will recover, sure looks like it is getting A1 care. Glad the only dead duck is in your pic too.

Beautiful pictures, Pixie! I'm so happy to hear that you have your power back on, and that you are all safe! Sorry for the damage you and Bill have had to your trees, etc.. Whew! Hope you don't have many more of those storms this winter!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

What amazing pictures, Celeste! I do hope your trees (and you) don't suffer too much damage.

How are others doing? We do not have any damage here (luckily)

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Dang Bill, that's not fun at all. However, you did have some pretty good luck in how things feel in that none of your trees were demolished. That little wolf eye has it's own angel. I love the ducks!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Beautiful pics, Celeste. Thanks for sharing. Glad to hear you got your power back on so soon. Sad to see all the bent over birches. It's been my experience at my place that when a birch gets bent over from heavy snow or ice it never goes back the way it was. It just stays bent and sends shoots off the top of the bent part that go straight up.

Bill, too bad about the big hickory. Glad it didn't hit the house! You sure got a lot of damage. Wow, is all I have to say!

No bad weather here, thank God. We got a lot of wind and rain, some downed branches and trees here and there, but not like you guys got.

Thanks everyone, im sure Candyce, Sherrie, and the others who were hit by it will have more to share. I only drove around my area, there are some other place's that were very hard hit. My DH said to stay close to home as the ice is still on the tree's. All we need it a good wind to come up and more tree's & branches will come tumbling down. I'm hoping for above freezing temps so it can melt!!

(Zone 4a)

Pixie your photo's are just brilliant! It is so sad that ice storms can cause so much damage. However their after math can be sooooooooo beautiful when looking at nature. So majestic and strong.

In Quebec several years ago there was a major ice storm that caused a LOT of chaos. Some parts were actually shut down and the storm basically rendered the city dormant. It was pretty scary. I will always remember that cause DH's dad was from Quebec and he headed there to help out when that happened. I remember him telling us the stories of devastation there....it was terrible.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

We too had a bad one 10 years ago....1998. We were without power for 11 days and no one could get to us as we had tree's down at both ends of our road. DH and a few other neighborhood men took the chainsaws out and cleared the way. We have an elderly gentleman on oxygen 2 house's away...we needed to clear the roads to get him out and some place safe. It also allowed the lineman to get through to us sooner.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

wow glad you guys are ok.... that's some terrible stuff

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

This link will explain the areas hardest hit...Canyce is in this area I believe and we may not here from her for a week.

New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York and Maine declared either limited or full states of emergency.

About 170,000 of the quarter-million affected in Maine still were in the dark Saturday.

At its peak Friday, more than 430,000 customers were without power in New Hampshire, the worst power outage in state history. About 375,000 still were in the dark Saturday afternoon.

Another 350,000 lost power in Massachusetts, down to about 200,000 Saturday. About 311,000 customers were knocked out in upstate New York, with at least 185,000 still without power Saturday

We have 2 generators going. No furnace heat but I have COMPUTER!!! NH is a stinking mess along with MA. I am just telling a little information that I have as we have had nothing since Friday - "that includes a shower"! A wash cloth and warm water works wonders.

Southern NH is a total disaster. Jaffery NH they showed a bucket loader going down the street just pushing tree limbs after tree limbs. Trains are shut down and 46 shelters in NH have been put into place.

Candyce is down there. John and Liza are down that way. People from Nashua NH are driving up her to get gas and head back home.

The Governer said " IF YOU DONT HAVE HEAT AND POWER IT WILL BE SEVERAL DAYS"

I did not take a close up picture but here is the woods in back of my house.

Hi Sherrie!! Glad to see you posting! Roughing isn't so great in the winter as it is in nice weather is it? lol

I would take a hurricane anyday. At least I could go jump in a lake! :-)

Exactly! lol
