Did you ever get Buddleia alternifolia?
Margaran was offering it - and just knew someone was looking for it... and you were at one point.
Are you still in need by chance??
Drop her a note if so....

CLOSED: Fall Frenzy Piggy Swap #6
Thanks, Danita! I ordered some other dwarf Hardy Hibiscus from the Summer Hill co-op... am thinking of putting them all along the back of one area, where "regular" H. moscheutos would probably be a bit too big.
Danita,
May I have some of your Luna Hibiscus? I don't remember if I previously asked for this. (Sorry). I have not been keeping good track of what I asked for. I am so happy to get what I get!
I'll put your name on one Lynn!
Thank you! Gosh, I Need to get off this site and go do something more productive than daydreaming about the new flower gardens!
Someone was offering Buddleia alternifolia? How did I miss that? I've been trying to buy that plant for 2 years now and I keep going on back order due to crop failure.
MGR -- no, you didnt miss it.
it was brought up last year in the swap, then Margaran mentioned it to me in Dmail that she recalled someone looking for it.... but no one stepped forward to claim it.
I was able to track down that Deborah was looking for it at one point... and this is where we sit.
Mygypsyrose - I did not see any Buddleia alternifolia - maybe we all missed it. :-)
Hey Danita,
May I have some of your Luna Hibiscus too? I would love to give it a try. I read that it will bloom the first season if you start the seed 4 months early.
Did everyone see there is a Seed Heating Pad Interest co-op going on.
Does anyone here use those seed mats? I use a regular heating pad and it seems to work nicely. Any pros and cons?
toofew
I am going to try the cat litter, rope lights methid this year-MUCH cheaper!!
I didn't realize a regular heating pad would work! I just (UNFORTUNATELY) won a bid on Ebay - with shipping $44.00, and it is a small one with a seed tray and dome. Can you say - stupid? I'm going Value Village shopping for a heating pad!
Ok fairy, I heard about the rope lights, but fill me in on the cat litter. You know I have a sweety kitty. Here he is.
Oh, and Critter, I have catnip constantly trying to take over my garden. But Ahi Cat loves it and so do some of the neighbor cats. I'm like you, I forget to deadhead it. And it is kind of pretty with the white/grey flowers.
toofew
OK< Me dumb. What is the cat litter/rope light method?
I've used a heat mat. I think it worked pretty well, but ruined the table i had it on
[was a cheap-ish laminate table, which is now a lil warped]
I'd think the heating pad may be too warm... plus, dont they have that auto shut off? that would not work at all.
I think what i read on my heat mat was... it makes it 5° warmer than the room temp.
the first year, i had really good germination.. last year i had a lot germinate, then about 90% died.. not sure why though.
I'm sticking with WS for my seeds.
I keep my regular heating pad on the lowest setting. I have it attached to a timer so it is on only during the day for a couple hours. tcs, sorry to hear about the table. I start my seeds on a tile counter, so I'm ok.
Oh, and I keep my house cold - 65 - and the basement is even colder where my light set-up is. So for a lot of my seeds I do need a heating mat.
toofew
You get a shallow contaner that is bigger than wahtever seeds you are sowing-if you are sowing a tray, then the shallow container should be a bit bigger.....put a set of rope lights in it and dump on cat litter-reg kind not the kind I use for actual kitty like feline pine-you can plug it into a timer like you do for outside and get a temp hookey on thingy to regulate it, but 1 set of rope lights should provide just about the right temps-high 70's, low 80's
tcs.... thanks! my eyes go crossed looking at all these posts and lists and then trying to my own @#$! straight. I was sure I missed it somewhere:-) That saves me from trying to look and going crazy not finding it! LOL
thanks for the tip of the day!
Toofew, I have that problem with germination temps too, the plant room stays too cool. I've got a lighted shelving set up, and the warmth of the lights on the shelf underneath has been my salvation. But I'm still needing a heat mat or something reliable at least. Hmmm...I've got an idea I may explore; my room upstairs is above the wood stove room, and the floor is always nice and toasty. I may just have to set up a little germination spot on the floor there! As soon as they're up, they can go right to the plant room.
Terese, I stick to wintersowing with just about everything I can- love the way it enables starting mass quantities with so little effort! Still have my tender things I have to get an early start on though, and already got lights set up for coleus and begonias anyway. Its also fun to handle baby plants when its frigid out and I'm longing to garden. This piggy wants it all, LOL!
Just updated with some new goodies...
Fairy, thats just brilliant! I'm too cheap for heat mats, and couldn't possibly afford as many as I really need. Excellent idea!
I found it online someplace...
Please think twice about using heating pads, electric blankets, etc. for purposes other than what they're designed for... read all those warnings about not leaving them on 24/7, not using under potentially wet conditions, not (in the case of blankets) using them with something on top of them, etc... I'm big on making do with what I have, but I don't mess around too much with electricity.
One of my Seed Starting 101 articles is about "Heat Mats & Alternatives".. it includes a link to a how-to on using a tray of sand or kitty litter with rope lights.
Danita, I'd love to try the Iris tectorum. I've been reading about them for years, it would be great to try them from seed!
Heat dramatically speeds up pepper germination. My grandmother had an old culture center yogurt maker that I used this year as a heat mat of sorts. It's small so I wrapped the seeds in moist coffee filters or papertowels and put them in a baggie. Then I sat the baggies in the yogurt maker and left the lid off. It worked great! I just had to check the seeds every other day for sprouts, then pot them up as needed.
You're not kidding, Danita! With bottom heat, I had habanero pepper seedlings ready to transplant in 12 days -- that's as long as it's taken them simply to germinate in the past!
Gottcha gemini!
Yes Critter, it makes a world of difference! The peppers that I had started with the extra heat were quickly the same size of peppers that I had sowed a month earlier without heat. p.s. added some salvias to my list

I'll put some more seeds on my list the week after Thanksgiving, but right now I have to put away my "toys" that are all over the dining room table, because we've got company coming soon! I'll go through my stash to see what I have that might be on peoples' wish lists too.
Fairy, is Monarda 'Petite Delight' on your list or just being offered to Tuink? If generally available, I'd love to try a few seeds...
