Genna, Do you mean Danita rather than MamawK? That looks like my list.
Several of those were just claimed so I'll let you know what I can get you in a little while.
Welcome aboard! It's a wild ride! :)
CLOSED: Fall Frenzy Piggy Swap #5
Oh, I am so sorry Danita, you are right..... I didn't realize I had scrolled right on from her post to yours. I warned you I am OVERWHELMED...... Wild ride indeed !!
Not sure if I could have kept up with all of this from day 1 - but starting late it is almost impossible....
THANKS!
genna
I've done a bit of research and realize that what I thought was rudbeckia hirta was actually rudbeckia fulgida so I corrected that on my have list. Pulltab and ilovejesus, I still have you down for those seeds. If you change your mind, now that you know what they really are, let me know.
I also listed all of my requested seeds. I've been hesitant to do this, 'cause now y'all know that I'm one of the biggest piggies! Well, I haven't reached my 100 yet. Havin' lots of fun!
Tonya
yanno Tonya --- sometimes, it's really hard to nail down exactly what you have.
I assume mine 'hirta' because i had read them bloom first year, which mine did.
Now, when i googled your "fulgida", i read about that on the Floridata site, then followed the link to "hirta" which stated the hirta is mroe of a biannual, because it blooms second year then dies.
so -- i guess that means, I have no idea what i have... but there are so many plants that go by "Black-Eyed Susan"
that i can just says... they're BES.
I just also went thru this with my Gaillardia. Thought i had Goblin ... but now i have no idea exactly what i have, so i call it the general term "Blanket Flower".
I'd say to the majority, teh exact name does not matter, unless they have it already.
that's my 2 pennies worth... and i'm sticking to it. *wink*
Thanks Terese. I know what you mean. I have to just go by how it looks. I received the plants from a neighbor this spring and they bloomed for me, so couldn't really say if they are a perrenial or biennial, but I know they're not an annual!
I too, know mine are not annuals... i snagged the seeds from the schools new park around the corner from me... they are tall, 3-4feet ... and bloomed first year, that is all i know. I should go on a quest to try to figure it out....
On seed quanity, I am grateful for anything or whatever quanity anyone sends me. I think this swap is so great. Thank you again, Starlight, for putting this together for us. Hey, it really speeded up getting all the seeds sorted and cleaned that I saved all summer! (Although I am still working on them!)
Also, if anyone has a request, dmail me. I will be leaving in the next hour or two. I am helping to take my ill mom to Johns Hopkins for a serious appointment. Last night, my father was admitted to ICU at a hospital at home...long story short, he will be having heart bypass surgery...when it rains, it pours. I will be traveling and may be away from computers for a few days. I appreciate your understanding. This is going to be a tough couple of days.
Wind, if you have any seeds for that gorgeous hollyhock you showed us, please sign me up for one please!
found this in a description of BES ... wish all plants were like this
A true sunshine worshiper that forgives neglect.
But -- if you google BES, you get Rudbuckia Hirta. go figure.....
RatherB .... just take care of your mom and dad... we;ll be here when ya get back.. you will be in my T's & P's.
Terese
Don't worry about a thing, just take care of your home family first. This family understands perfectly. I wish my parents were still around to dote on. sigh.
Thanks, Terese. I have a few more minutes yet...so I will be looking at the lists one more time...I think I will most likely go into seed withdrawl!
Are there any seed support meetings in Baltimore? Or Elmira NY? They will find me walking into stranger's backyards, combing over their plants for seed heads...Wonder what the police report will look like for that?
....LOL... with lil baggies in hand for snagging seed heads.
Mygypsyrose:
May I have Columbine 'William Guinness' if you still have it available?
Many thanks,
RatherB
Heavinscent:
May I also ask for Malva sylvestris 'Zebrina'?
Thank you.
Wind,
May I also ask for your pink obedient plant?
One little piggy has her face turning pinker than pink, snout down to the floor in embarassment!!! Went to sort out seeds of heliopsis "bressingham doubloon" , only to discover that what I thought were seeds (the long thin pieces sticking out of the dried flower center) are not seeds at all, and there are only a few things that look like seeds, and lord knows where they had been hiding. Anyway, PamSue, Starlight and MamawK, (and also Frausnow, who, thankfully I hadn't promised), have to take back my promise. Sooooo sorry. Even looked to see if I could find them online, but couldn't. Can only say that next year I'll try to collect a lot more dried flower heads as they seem to have only one seed in each. Next time I'll make sure I absolutely know what are seeds before I post. Will send you all d-mails to make sure you see this.
I didn't get nearly as many seeds from my heliopsis this year, either... I think the birds beat me to a lot of them!
Do they usually have more than 1 seed in each flower head?
perenniallyme, I may be sharing your embarrassment. I started looking through my salvia greggii wild thing "seeds" and was quite discouraged to realize that I don't have near as many as I thought because I had saved more than just the seeds. It is still blooming, but is not nearly so generous with seeds as it's neighbor coccinea. pamsue, danita, ilovejesus, critter, gemini and wind. I hope to have at least a few seeds for each of you. As I had mentioned to critter, I may have to send calyx's if they are not dry enough to separate. I will put them in paper if I do.
Salvia seeds really need to be dry brown or black before collecting. Seeds removed from the plant while still green won't survive. They just shrivel up. That's my experience anyway.
Thanks Danita, well, these may not work so well after all, but I guess it's worth a try for those on the list who still want them. I haven't tried bagging seed heads, but may have to on this plant. Those seeds are sure sneaky critters and find a way to escape if I leave them on to dry. As I mentioned in an earlier thread, I have been just shaking the limbs for any loose calyx's since I haven't been able to catch them once they are dry.
As I said on the other thread, my requests are only a "wish list"... it won't bother me a bit to end up not getting some of those seeds I've asked for... This isn't like placing catalog orders, after all (and even catalog sources sometimes run out of what you wanted). :-)
Yea, they are awfully sneaky!
Now you know why they charge so much for salvia seeds and it's usually a small quantity to boot!
Nbgard,
Sorry for your sake, as red piggy faces are no fun, but thanks for the commiseration, and glad I'm not alone in this.
Yes, no reason to feel bad. This trade is for FUN!!! ^_^
Hey, maybe we should start a thread where we share seed collecting information that we've learned during this trade? It's hard to find that kind of information. Then we can say this trade is an "Educational Experience" rather than just a OINK fest! :)
Yes, the bright side is I'm definitely learning some stuff Danita!
PLEASE add any seed collecting tips/tricks to the appropriate PlantFiles entry! Seed photos are also so useful, and in spring maybe we can make a collective effort to post seedling or sprouting photos too... anything to make identification easier when you're wondering "nice plant emerging or hideous weed?" LOL
No worries here, the trough will be so full, I won't even notice :-)
Jill,
i too have been adding images of seeds. Never thought to add tips in saving seeds.... though i do have to admit my "jar" tip has helped others. though it is the same idea of using a coffee can, which i read somewhere in here.
but has really worked well for me this year... i think i managed to get more seeds.
Hi RatherB, I got your requests for the hollyhocks and the pink obedient plant. All the best with your family.
*********
This is wild senna, Cassia hebecarpa, zones 7-9 native perennial, butterfly host plant. We are zone 6b and so far so good. This is the second year we've had it. The seed pods were really interesting... long flat bean pods, that turned black when ripe.
Wind was that senna on your list, I think I want to try that one here and see how it does.
RatherBDigging,
God Speed on your trip and your parents !! Just looking here but been down this road and Dave's people be here when you return with arms open!!
Carolyn
Hi, could you please explain how this seed swap works? I just found it, and don't see the instructions. Can I join even if I don't have a trade list posted? Thanks,
mawnature/ Annette
The first post on this thread has all the links you need ("swap guidelines" etc). Starlight can tell you if there's still a spot open... I think we are at 35 already for "regular" participants, unlimited participation for storm/disaster victims.
Annette,
the very top post in this thread http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=5804159
has all the links for the various threads, including the instructions.
you can also drop Star a Dmail to see if there are any "slots" open, so you can join in on the frenzy.
Terese
**Waves to Jill**
we cross posted...
~~~ waves back ~~~
I've lost track of whether or not my list of participants (at the top of the "lists" thread) is up to date... Did anybody else jump in after Lynn?
Thanks ladies....will check out the links!
Annette
Also, if anybody is in the swap already and I missed you on that list, please let me know!
Also also (LOL) if you haven't posted on the lists thread, please do... even if it's just to post a wish list! :-)
