Wow! Lovely plants everyone!

Carlos: I really love the 'Samba Brazil' and 'Sol Brazil' ... gorgeous blooms!

And, Wren: your blooms are lovely and what a Beautiful Epi Guard Dog! Is he a Belgian Shepherd?Sure is a handsome guy!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Yes He is the variety called the Tervuren. That day I was trying to get some pictures out there and he keep barking at me until I told him ok sit and I will take your picture and he did-he is getting way to smart for his breeches. He was happy after that and let me continue.

I really wish they labeled the holiday cactus with their names in this country. I found the pink/yellow one at Lowe's in GA.

I wish I had the time to drive over to that big nursery in Tallahassee and see what ones they have.

Oooh, I was out on the deck today watering a few things and found two of my holiday cacti full of buds! One is a large one and one in a little 2" pot. I can't wait for the blooms to open. They may have had names when I got them years ago but I have no clue what they are. I have a few others around here somewhere ... hiding amidst all the other plants. When we had a couple of cold nights I moved many of them into the Florida room and others got shoved up against the south side of the house with blankets over them and others are in the study and some in the guest room. I even have a couple of plants in the guest bathroom. I need to search for my other holiday cacti.

Will post a picture tomorrow!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I bought 4 more this morning. LOL I found one who buds look like they will be a different pink. Just what I needed more plants.

I found out that the yellow and the white are effected by the the degree of cold that they are exposed to. Colder it is when they are in bub the less pink that is in these flowers.

Sandy, You are the Epi Queen or the Epi Addict, aren't you? You need to change your user name from Wren to Epinut! LOL. I bet your greenhouse is going to be amazing with so many blooming beauties!

Thanks for that link ... very interesting!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I hope it is next year. I think I will leave user name alone but I think epi addict is more or less right.
I am trying hard not to buy anymore epi's until the green house is finished. But I was tempted to buy some orchids Saturday up in ST Simon's Island, Ga that was the best Ace Hardware nursery that I have ever seen.

Sandy,

You have it backwards, the yellows need to be kept ABOVE 20C (68F) during budstage to prevent the pink coloration.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Well my brain works backwards, sometimes what I type is not what I want to type. You should see some of the mess that I catch-looks like something my dog would have typed. Too many wacks to the old brain case.

But that does explains the different in the whites and yellows. I so want a white-white CC.

I bought a few more. And I think I get a white/white no pink in the bottom part of the flower.

And I get another one that might be salmon and white. The only open bloom is partly damage so will have to wait to be sure. But it looks different from my other salmon/orange ones.

Oooh, I love that white/white one! Gorgeous!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

After it finish blooming I will take cuttings from it. The salmon and white is to small for cuttings this year.

Here is another of the new reds that I get.

Wren the cuttings you sent me are doing good, here some of them.

Very good.

I have found a number of broken pieces laying around I think I am going to just throw them all in a pot and have a rainbow pot. In fact one of the new pots I get today has a piece stuck to the bottom and it has developed roots. Oh I gett the white/white at HD

I think after the first of the year I am going to so down to Bob Smoley's gardenworld. He seems to have a large collection. I want one of everything.LOL

yes it is so lovely. this is the first true white I have found. My others all have some pink in the lower part of the bloom.

Here is one of my near whites or is it a very light pink. So hard to tell.

Love that red, I have that one also. Have y'all noticed that there is more of a variety in both colors and bloom type this year? I even noticed a little bit of difference in the leaves types also.

I think after they all bloom and I get pictures I will post each one. And if y'all would do so also, then we may have a cutting trade for "holiday cactus"!!!!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Here is another new one. The buds on this one where short and fat. Also the leaves are very large.

Gorgeous Holiday Cacti!

Wren- the pink one you posted there looks like it could be one of the 'Thor' varieties.....maybe 'Ritt'.

Do you collect named varieties?
I do, but have a couple of NOIDs in my collection. I just love Thanksgiving cacti. I have one true Christmas Cactus, Schlumbergera x Buckleyi, but it is still a babe. Received as cuttings last year.

Keep postin, yall. I love these plants!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I wish I know the names but the local sourced do not have there names. There is a place down south of us that do sale named cuttings(40+) and I am planing a trip down there in a couple of months. They will have the "Easter" cactus next year. And they have epis also!!!!! LOL

The pink one's plant is a little different that my others the leaves are larger and thicker and the buds are thicker

I have a couple of Holiday Cactus in bloom now. No names ... just generic plants purchased over the years from Wal-Mart.

Sandy, you mentioned in your Dec. 12 post that there was a place "down south" of you that had cactus for sale, along with epis. Where is it? We are now in FL for the winter and when I get over this cold I caught on the way down, I would like to visit it -- I am becoming an eip nut also!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

bob smoley's http://www.bobsmoleys.com/

I have not been there yet but it looks like they have a lot. I hope to go later next year.

Deland, FL & Hot Spr, AR

Thanks Sandy. It looks like they are less than 100 miles from us, and would make for a nice day trip -- maybe we will bump into one another there!

I will probable go in Feb or March. I wont to finish my shade/green house and benches first.

Jean and Wren,

I visited Smoley's in June of 2006. I think you will be pleased with his offerings. I came away with Hoyas and Sansevierias(awesome!). His prices are reasonable and he's very pleasant to deal with. A nice family operation there.

Thank you!! That is great to know.

Thanks GrowHappy, I remember many years ago going to a vendor's in south FL and the man there was so unpleasant that we left without buying anything. What a difference a smile and nice disposition makes! I wonder how many customers he turned away with his surly attitude.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Any one tried to grow CC's from seeds? Looks like my attempts to pollinate may have taken.

When should i cut back my Thanksgiving cactus to encourage a bushier, more compact plant?

They are now all done blooming. Most of them are several years old. The oldest one is truly getting ugly. Stems are all woody and the plant seems stressed. I think I will can it soon. I have about 6 pots of these all total....

Anyway--All the ends on all the branches are long and fairly skinny. Not too much "branching" any more. I would like to rejuvenate them so they make a lot of new growth and look more compact. Is that possible? Advisable? Will it affect next years bloom?
How far back can i cut the stems?

I am guilty of neglecting these plants. i do not fertilize much and, in the house during the Winter, they often get bone dry. I am sure that does not help. Watered everything today!

Thanks, Gita

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I do not know when the best time to trim back but your plant should last for may more years. The woody stems are normal. My DGM would pinch off pieces and stick them into the pot with the mother plant and if you really look at the plants that you buy they are a whole bunch of cuttings stuck in together, this is what gives the plant that "fullness".

I plan on repotting and trimming mine in the next couple of months, just as soon as they stop blooming. I am still getting buds.

wren,

Thank you for replying. I know you know your "stuff".....

Just this morning i was wondering if i should re pot them all in fresh soil as well??????
I am sure the soil is depleted by now and could use a refresher. My favorite, all purpose potting mix, is MG. Would that be OK? What do you use?

Another thought....
These "cactus" have generally small root systems and the tops would be hugely top-heavy by comparison. When I re pot--will there be a problem with them staying in the new soil mix without toppling over/or out?

You say you will be trimming yours. How far back--or just "Whack!",,,
Looking at mine, I would like to just cut back to the first "V"--leaving a few "leaves" above it. I think I did this a couple of years ago. Nothing, visibly, changed for the better.....

Just FYI--Mine are outside all Summer and into early Winter to give them a 'cold snap". By the time i bring them in, there are buds on all the tips. I might have mentioned this further back in this Thread or on another one. Inside, unfortunately, they do not get very good light. Just don't have the window space....

Gonna try and get a picture to show you.......

By the way--you have some amazingly beautiful Th. Giv. Cactus! Do yours stay outside all year long? I work at HD, and this year they had the yellow and apricot ones for sale. I took a few broken off pieces and stuck them in fresh soil to see if i could root them. Don't think they are doing all that good! Maybe I should use seed-starting soil or pure Sphagnum Moss? Your opinion please......

Lots of questions--I know, but thanks!

Gita

This first picture does not look too bad--but I wanted you to see that most of the tip-growth is a made up of single "leaves"--thus giving the plant a droopy look.

This is the same plant--but the other side. This side looks a lot worse....The growth seems a bit dried out. I know it might be b/c I am not good at keeping the plant watered....

BTW--Do you believe that one should not water the XC while it is in bloom? I heard that somewhere--and the plant might look "dried out" because I did not water it a lot.
