Northeast Gardening: Garden Photos - Part 44

Sale? There's another SALE? Good thing I'm limited to their online sales/specials. Very friendly and special of them to send me email notifications about their online sales I think. Or not. ommmmmmm I will not order anything more on sale ommmmmm (my montra that never works but it feels good doing it).

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, Dahlia, very good of them to offer you specials on-line. Always hoping you'll take the bait. Doesn't take much for me. I see sale and I go nuts.

Oh, okay, Allison, thanks. I have not posted any pics on the PlantFiles.

Onewish... those are a great sequence of bluejay shots. That bird has a lot of personality.

Karen, bloom.com is pretty much directly tied to DG. At least from what I can tell. There's not a whole lot to it other than it features some different photo everyday. It only takes a minute or two to check it out. I've seen some interesting, new to me, plants on there.

There's three of my dwarf nandinas, the last one is hard to see, with a hellebore between them. It was only about 530 pm when I took this shot. I need to plant some more hellebores, or something similar, in between the others. I had dwarf lavenders between the nandina before, they didn't like it. There's a big hosta that occupies all the space behind between the hellebore and the house from spring until fall. And I do believe that they are all Harbour belle nandina's as well. The deer have been eating the new growth, that's why if you look closely you can see these stick like things sticking out of the nandina's.

this was about an hour earlier, and the camera was in night mode for even this pic. These plants are still in their pots waiting to go in the ground somewhere, and I haven't done anything with the area that they are sitting in either, just weeds mostly. Anyhow, I just love the color that the penstemon and the others have turned!

Good morning RC.
That Calluna is really dramatic.

as well as this one.

Good morning Jo Ann! Thanks. I agree, I love that calluna. I will have to take a picture of it when the sun is out. It's even brighter. Unfortunately I'm a little embarrased to take pictures of it though since I didn't give it enough room and the plants behind it forced it to grow sideways for light. Instead of pruning it back to get it to grow upright, i'm trying to train it back that way since they take forever to recuperate from pruning. The bullies behind it have been pushed back.

Has your painting arrived yet?
I am thinking of enlarging the gardens after saying to DD that what I have is more than I can manage.
I'll wait until May to definatly decide, and see if the weeding and planting of what I have already, is enough.
Its easy to make plans while my muscles aren't screaming.
I also loved the color in the "unplanted pots"pic.
Same burgandies and oranges as the Helleborus photo last April ot May.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

What resolution do you use on your camera to get such clear crisp pictures. I just put the Fatsia thru photoshop and it read 72. I cant believe it.Its just wonderful

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Ohhh.... you have given me an idea of where I might plant those unplanted plants Jo Ann. You're right. they would go well together. I haven't gotten my mail in a few days, which sounds as if it's unfortunate that I haven't. Now i'm excited to see!! oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!! I have to take one of my cats to the Vet tomorrow, and the post office is nearby so that will be good.

Expanding the gardens is always a good thing! Less mowing, or at least that's the way that I look at it!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I would like to bring this bed out more on the right and increase the depth all the way around in front of the spruces that groe on the property line.
Now that I have had some cuccess with lazagna gardening I think I can do it.
The Viburnums are way bigger than thay look when in full leaf, the border isn't deep enough for the Oriental Poppies I love, and its the best full sun area.

Thanks bunches, as per usual. :-p ummm... that's where you can tell that I'm not really all that camera literate yet Jo Ann. I don't actually know how to adjust the resolution on my camera, it's an 8mpix camera that I have leave set at the highest quality setting most of the time. I can change the pixel setting and I'm almost positive that would impact the resolution in one way or another. The resolution, according the my computer, is 3264 x 2248. What does the 72 mean?

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I think that you should go for it with that bed Jo Ann. It could be a lot of fun. And being full sun, there's a lot of potential things to do with it. What kind of viburnums are those?

This is what I know about good resolution in photos. Bright sunny day = a good picture day. That's what I know!! :-p I must be off for some sleep, especially since I need to get to the vets before starting preparing holiday food.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Your camera has a higher M than mine ,I think your camera takes a 300 res. picture.
I could probably take mine at that high a res. but I would have to convert every picture to a 72 to post on DG.
I really should spend more time with mine and see what I get.
There is someone who posts 300 res pics but makes the size of the picture 2 inches square. Maybe thats what I will do since I have to change the pic size anyway.
The smallest pic my camera will take is 10x14 or something like that.
I am really technically challanged.
SIL and DD are remodling the kitches, DD said she wasn't going to buy the fancy trivection oven because I wouldn't be able to use it. HEY I can learn anything if GD teaches me.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just a picture hint befor bed. I take floral pics when it's not sunny, love them best.
Don't let the sunless days stop you.

I think you may be confusing dots per inch (DPI), used for printing, vs. resolution (Mpixels), Jo Anne. I reduce my photos to approx 800 X 600 to post. If it's a more vertical photo, I limit the height to 730 so it can be viewed without scrolling.

Then when you print actual pictures you dont want a JPG you want a BMP or WMF.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I'll have no argument with you Victor.
Anything I know about me camera,I figured out on my own, Its just simplest use for this right brained person.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Karen, Parks sends me emails along with snail mail catalogs. This was in an email.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Shelly, what's a calluna? It looks like related to heather or heath. Very pretty. Your pics are lovely, as usual.

LOL! JoAnn, I have more than I can manage, and I'm always thinking of enlarging my gardens. Oh, I think my best photos are taken on bright overcast days. The only good sunny day pics I've taken are the ones where the sun is full on, and not at an angle that gives heavy shadowing. Bright overcast days have little shadows, and colors are more saturated.

Schickenlady, why do you want a BMP or WMF for printing rather than a JPG? I have printed many pics from JPG's and they've come out great. I haven't tried printing with others. Are you talking about printing photo quality images like you would get when going to a camera store, or printing with a home printer?

Celeste, thanks for the info on Parks. I think I will sign up for their mailings.

Karen, thanks bunches! You have a great eye! Calluna is heather. Yep, one in the same.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Ok, so that must be the botanical name. If I had Googled it I would have found out what it was.

Karen

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Thanks for all the technical info folks. I'm trying to take it all in!!

Karen.... Actually, I agree about the bright overcast days being good for pictures! Unfortunately that's an effect that usually mostly happens during the summer and rarely in the winter, at least here. Overcast days from maybe October through April don't bring much light with them. When it does, it's a very exciting event! Or it will be bright for 5 min. and by the time you've grabbed your camera it's either grey out again or raining. The weather forecasters on the news are always very optimistic about a good overcast day. Really.
Sorry, I should've said that Calluna was the botanical. I have a habit of intermingling my botanical and common names all in the same sentence and without really even noticing it. Especially with heath and heather, I can never remember which goes to which. For me it's always either Erica and Calluna or...."that plant there."

If anyone wants to know my experience with Parks, it's as such... They did great with bulbs for me. Perennials were in good shape when they arrived, but really tiny. But, they were cheap and I can usually get a tiny plant to do ok for me. I wouldn't order a tree or shrub from them for anything. They were too young of plants to be shipped bare root and they weren't dormant. I think that anything shipped bare root should be dormant. They did replace the trees and then sent more that didn't survive the trip. I bugged them again and they offered replacements (I showed them pictures taken the day the package arrived of the dead trees) but when I requested that they either be sent when dormant or with a little dirt... they wouldn't agree to that. So we settled on them sending me some other grasses or something that I thought would do ok to ship bare root. That worked. So, that's my take on Parks. I'd order bulbs from them again any time, perennials if they were a very good price, and never a tree or shrub.

Good advise RC.
