Northeast Gardening: Garden Photos - Part 44

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Good to know Willie, where did you buy yours from??

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Most crapes are zone 6 or 7, but if you have a sheltered area, it's worth a shot. It may die back but remain root hardy. Doesn't bloom in the spring though - mid-July through Sep for me.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

who you callin Willie:)

I got mine from rarefind - they have a 35% off sale until the end of the week. i also got a crape that i plan to keep in a large container and store in the garage in the winter.- also from rarefind.

my wife has been on me to clean up the garage and was "surprised" i was able to find space for it:) only enough for the tree though - clean up will be in December when my company has a 3 week shut down - gotta love the economy.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Geez, 2nd time I've done that Bill! Sorry!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info though!! lol

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I found one Crepe that says hardy to z5b...still pushing it but not as bad.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Maybe just Billy or Billie?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Funny guy - watch it with the ie - although i read your article (yes i have been behind on my personal email just a bit) last night on men and gardening and maybe that should be my call name here - btw only my wife and family call me billy -
Celeste which crepe was it? the one i got was "arapho"

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

'Cedar Lane Red' is one said to be hardy to 5b

'Red Filli' is at rarefind but it's a shrub not a tree. Very hardy by the looks of things!

'Tonto' in PF says it has been grown in a 5a in Ill.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What color do you want? I have Tonto and Hopi.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

good look? meant luck - pink velour sounds very nice!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Pink or red....I really just want one to survive here!! lol

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You'll never know unless you try!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I imagine your bloom period would be shorter than mine.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I intend to try this spring, the ground here is frozen pretty hard already to try now. lol

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm reading that...may not bloom until July!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Doesn't bloom until July for me and goes into Sep. Would be shorter for you.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

HUSH! lol

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Great picture of the columbine there on bloom.com Victor! I also noticed that Dragonfly had an excellent picture a couple of days back as well!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Shelly. I'll have to look for Bev's shot. I check bloom.com sporadically.

What's up with your Nandina Victor? ^_^ Usually they're hard to kill!! Some areas (not here, buy a state or two away) have the straight species on their knoxious plant list! Anyhow, my experience with them is that the dwarf ones do better in my front beds, which have mediocre drainage. The larger varieties died there and it's very likely due to too much moisture. However, in the back yard, which has excellent drainage and doesn't get as much water, the larger ones have thrived. I had two back there, but recently gave one away.

OMG - did I sse waht I saw?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They were marginally hardy here - Firepower and Harbor something. Only two survived. The straight species is doing great and has spread all of about three feet in over ten years. No problem here at all. Never volunteered anywhere in my garden.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Schicken..... what did you see?

Victor you have no idea how many folks here would love to know that Nandina can't rule the yard in some place! I really like it anyhow and have never had a problem. But, I've seen the problem for others.... and I still thought that the yard full of nandina was pretty!

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Are you guys talking about columbine? Was it my shot or dragonfly 53? I had this yellow one that I put in the contest. They don't stay arround but a couple of yrs in my garden. Is this what it was? BEV

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Victor, When I click on your link it shows my Henry but when I go to bloom.com it shows a columbine in that link. Oh well at least I made one thanks. BEV

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yours was from the 23rd. Today's columbine is my shot.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

'Harbor Belle' was the other dwarf nandina.

I'm impressed with the photos, folks---didn't know there was a bloom.com--also didn't know about the hardy crepe myrtle! Definitely going to plant one in the spring!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You won't be disappointed! Great, long-blooming flowers and many have wonderful fall color.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Celeste, did you get that sale notice from Parks in the mail? I didn't see anything about it on their website, at least not on the page that I was looking on. I would order some things from them at that price. I like that BENI HIME JM and the CORAL BARK JM. I'm sure I would find other things there I like. I wonder if they would give me the sale price if I call them. Wouldn't hurt to try.

Oh, now I want a crepe myrtle. You guys are killing me!

Bloom.com? I've never checked that site out. I don't have time for another one. DG takes all my time, and I'm satisfied with that. Takes me awhile to read and view all the pics. I'm no speed-reader for sure. Oh, now I see! Bloom.com is part of DG! So, how do you get your pic on Bloom.com?

Nice blue jay shots, Allison!

Karen

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)
