Brutally cold! 20 with a wind chill of 9. And I have to go to a burial. Brrr.
Todays Weather in Your Garden - 33

Here's the current conditions at my place.

I don't know what the wind chill is, but I can hear it out there, so I'm sure it's down there. There's a Thanksgiving parade in Plymouth today, but it's too cold for me to go.
Karen
Winter is definitely here...these past week has been extremely cold.....actually this type of weather is a month early for us here.....Not only has it been cold but we have already had our first snow storm and this snow isn't leaving! Brrrrrrr!!!
its early here as well.
first snow last year was Thanksgiving day
Being this cold this early helps cool Lake Erie fast, and the sooner the lake can freeze over, the sooner our Lake Effect Snow Machine stops.
Lets pray for that, those storms are brutal
Candyce - sounds like Gregg's "woodpile" is serving you all very well!!! I was worried about your supply when we saw how early the cold temps had come up there. I'll relax now! Hank is happy for you too. He was so impressed with what Gregg had done. Stay warm, my friend!!
Karen - what a horrible thing you've described with the skin effect on the drug reaction. Molly, too, was very close to death in September, and we are so happy to see her coming around. We still have to soak her and remove the crusts every 3-4 days so the bacteria won't build up under them, so the recovery is still a slow process. She is back to herself personality-wise.
Nancy - have a safe trip and a lovely Thanksgiving in Virginia. Hopefully, you'll enjoy some more moderate temps there!!
At the football game last night, the wind picked up and it got really chilly. The man sitting next to me was from The City (did I get that right, Victor???? LOL) and he asked me if we have our heat turned on. He almost flipped out when I told him "No" and we sleep with our windows open. It's really refreshing here IMHO.
Hank is just thrilled that Directv is carrying the Yale/Harvard football game on tv this year. We're having our own private party and I must go now to put on my Yale Football shirt and to serve up the hot wings and shrimp remoulade with non-alcoholic Sparkling Cider mixed with our own OJ. We call it our "Orange Squeeze". LOL
Happy Weekend, Everyone!!
Louise
Close, Louise. Actually it's THE CITY!
Mea culpa, Victor! LOL
No walk today---it's brutal here--I've been busy working for our church bazaar all week--glad to be indoors! Molly looks great, Louise--much better than Columbus Day. Thanks, Karen for the winterberry news. Jo Ann & Deb---we are having wretched temps, but no snow--hope yours quits soon!
Yes - very cold and windy. Supposed to go down to 15 overnight!
15????????!!!! Already??? Oh, Dear! Good thing oil costs are down!! Stay warm and well, everyone!
Very windy today 28 low of 20
Stayed at a steady 25 all day but had a steady wind of 15-25mph too!
Oh, Louise, your poor little Molly! I'm glad she made it through just fine. One thing nice about animals is that mentally they pull through traumatic experiences like that much better than people do. They don't obsess over it.
Well, I ended up not buying my winterberry holly as I had planned. Instead I bought a daylily for $150. I really am nuts. I was really excited when I saw this one, though, and as I have plans for getting serious about hybridizing I decided that this one was just the thing for my new breeding program. It's a bearded daylily (something new and different) called MICHAEL'S SWORD. Here's a link to see it: http://rainbowhilldaylilyfarm.com/2005intros/michael.html
Karen
Jen... Michele lurks around the boards... I still think it's overwhelming to her
Thats a beautiful saylily Karen.
Looks like a little bit of a warm up!
(Note it is colder now than the low ..... how that happens, I do not know)

26 and breezy. Went down to 20 overnight.
Thanks Jen for the link, and Jo Ann and Celeste for the info. Interesting about the bees. Not looking promising for this winter.
I had the grandkids for a couple of days, so didn't get back here.
They only live 8 miles away, but they are out of the snowbelt, so only have an inch in their yard. They got up at 6:00 AM, we went to karate for four hours, then they played outdoors in the snow for about three hours. They ate like horses, and then slept like logs.
Wow - four hours of karate! Did they obliterate the snowman?!
I'm hoping for a good though. Just received some plants from Rarefind and I need to get them in the ground. Thought I was done planting about six weeks ago but couldn't resist this sale.
Will they live? I'd break a shovel trying to dig now!!
What didja git
Yes, they did karate chop the snowman after they built it. My grandson is in cycle for his black belt, so it's a long practice for him, including running by the lake. I went down to the lake to watch him run, and boy, that was cold!
My grandaughter is 6, and she does this thing that seems amazing to me. You know how people do push ups and clap their hands in between the push ups? She pushes her hands and feet, all at the same time right off the floor about 6 inches. Almost like she levitates. I never saw anyone do such a thing.
Yes, what did you get Victor?
Wow - that's impressive, Polly. I got Zenobia 'Woodlanders', which, unlike the zenobias I have, gets great fall color.
Lovely, and a nice fall color!

As to the 'free' wood:
One of our neighbors is a developer and had some trees he had felled last season but never cleaned up. He offered all the trees to Gregg on the condition that the acreage got cleaned up really good so that the land could be built upon. All Gregg had to do was to cut it all to truck (that's pick-up truck) length and haul it down here to cut and split it to stove lengths.
Gregg has not only delivered a few cord of the wood to the elderly couple next door, he has also found them a wood stove, for free, in which to burn it. He is really a teddy bear.
As for burning strictly wood, well, this is the first season we will be doing that. So far we have had January temps and winds for a week already, and the house has stayed very comfortable. I think we will make it.
Currently:
17°
Wind: W at 14 MPH
Humidity: 32%
Dewpoint: 1°
Pressure: 30.27 in.
Windchill: 8°
The sun is bright, but it's a bitter chill out there! We even have a dusting of snow already.
oh my goodness Karen for that much $ do they come and plant it for you??? lol
sunny-high of 38 low of 28 not as windy as yesterday
I like the fact that the Michsel'd Sword daylily is listen as a doemant. great for this area. Still too cold & we have to get up early to get my brother to the airport. I bet he will be warmer at home (New Mexico).
Karen - that DL is really pretty! Congrats on your kick-off to hybridizing! That's exciting!
Candyce - good to hear that the wood is serving you well. I like to think of you all cozy warm on these cold days you're having. That's wonderful that Gregg was able to find the stove for your neighbors. Good for him!
Tonight and tomorrow are warming up a bit down here, but the temps will remain cooler than normal for the rest of the week. I spent most of today making 3 apple walnut cobblers - 2 for neighbors and one for us. Pumpkin pies tomorrow. I like to bake when the house is cool.
MMM--sounds good! I baked all week for the bazaar---Doug is mad I didn't leave any home, but he'd eat it all! Lovely daylily, Karen--I'd love to see what you can hybridize from that. It was a little warmer today, because the wind died, & so I did walk. Expecting rain for Tues.---but the ground is frozen! I'm thinking "big mess"!
Beautiful DL Karen, good luck with it!
Getting cold tonight, going down to 14 but should climb back up into the 30's tomorrow. Can't believe im excited about making it to the 30's.
Good morning
Seems to be warming up.
High today in the low 40"s with rain and snow(snain) I might be able to finish the winter sowing.
