Best/ worse/ ? did you learn today #69 visit with friends...

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Hey, Betty! They ship fruitcake, don't they?!!!! ^_^

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Betty, when I was a kid, after the depression, flour was hard to get. We always had a sifter, and had to sift flour AND meal to make sure there weren't and weevils in it! We couldn't throw anything away! We bought it by the barrel when we could get it, and it had to last!

Victoria Harbour, ON

OMG, guess you would Audrey have to be pretty hungry to eat flour that had the critters...the flour had been mixed guess I could have just emptied it, but out the butter and sugar went with it...

Should be getting dressed but I got me a comfy outfit and it's in the washer/dryer so must wait awhile..

As I'm starting the workshop shortly
Just incase you want the link
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/924284/

I'm in no hurry, now that's unusual isn't it..look at the time and jammies...but will by the time 11am comes..

Was going to start taking out the 3rd tree but might wait until I take a quick break...

Carol, any burnt fingers...now where's our Judy??

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Betty-it is SUnday-no need to be in a hurry there dear lady:) And no one cares if you teach clas in your jammies:)

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Cakes look great Betty..I took some over to my neighbours Art and Heather this morning..and I have eaten two pieces already myself.
I should put some away in the freezer too.
I have been out gathering some pine cones and cutting red dogwood..haven't started to do the wreath yet..Need to let the pinecones dry a bit first.

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Starzz how do you make it? I would just have to get the dogwood.

Victoria Harbour, ON

I always put mine in the micro..works wonders..especially those not open...they have the most beautiful colors, bright reds/oranges and the sap then creates a finish on them almost Carol as though you varnished them..just don't forget to put paper towels underneath to catch the sap..even the oven works well...oh what smells throughout the house...

And yes, I've 2 pieces as well, should be freezing it so I don't eat it all before June or any other passer by dropsin..lol

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

microwave what?? what did I miss??

Victoria Harbour, ON

pine cones, those not open..

back to our workshop..having fun..eating cake, listening to music and enjoying good company..lol

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

oooo-neat trick-had no clue anout that!!

Fostoria, OH(Zone 5a)

O.K. pushy DIL wants you al to have my Pumpkin Dump Cake. Actually a recipe I got from my DD who is a GREAT cook. Got it from my Mom.

PUMPKIN DUMP CAKE
1 Lg. Can Pumpkin
2 t. Cinnamon
1t Nutmeg
1/2 t each Ginger, Cloves, Salt
1 13oz. Can Evaporated Milk
1 1/2 C. Sugar
3 Eggs

Blend the above ingredients well and pour into a greased 9 x 13 pan. Sprinkle a regular size Yellow Cake Mix over the mixture in the pan. Pat down lightly with a spoon (don't press too hard).
Sprinkle 1 Cup chopped Walnuts over cake mix. Then pour 1 Cup melted butter over entire mixture.
Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Cool some but best when served warm with whipped cream.
Keeps in refridgerator for a week.

This smells absolutely wonderful while baking. You will have a hard time not eating any of it right out of the oven.

This is a great substitute for pumpkin pie at the Holidays.

By the way, substitute cherry pie filling (or any other fruit filling, for the pumpkin and you still have good Dump Cake.

Crozet, VA

The Dump Cake sounds awesome ladydragon!!! I am definitely going to try sometime during the holidays. That a person can use other fruits as the base is a really cool idea. I will let you all know when I make it.

Betty-microwave for how long??

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the recipe mom-I don't have that one either

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Vicki,
I used the dogwood for putting in planters with greenery..not for a wreath. I just need to glue a few pinecones to an old tired looking wreath.
Betty I am going to try the microwave to dry the pine cones. Thanks..

Not for long Carole, if you over-cook they will scorch and burn..so try one at different temps..I can't recall how long I did them, that's why when in the oven you can monitor better however they aren't as vivid in color..looking forward to seeing your craft project...

Can't visit long, room full of crafters on the Santa workshop thread..lol..

More recipe's...if they turn out as good as Ruby's I'll be thrilled..trying NOT to go upstairs for that 3rd. piece

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Ok..here is the wreath I "spruced up"
I put the large pine cones in the microwave..about 5 minutes..
The smaller cones were already attached to the branches when I cut them.
The wooden pieces underneath are not part of the wreath..I just hung it there to take the pic..but I may just leave it there..I like it.

Bought this pretty one in Frankenmuth, you can't see it's beauty, made of tinfoil and it captures all the colors its set near...

Hi, Betty. Am trying to work on the cards and have a few (many) questions.
1. Template is taped to work area. Now ribbon. Do you cut the pieces of ribbon to fit the space they go in or do you just lay one on top of another?
2. How do you make the first piece of ribbon stay until you put on the second, and so on?
3. Do you follow the #'s, 1 color, 2 second color 3 third color, 4 repeat 1st color, etc.? That doesn't seem to be the way you did the angel.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Somewhere Janice I showed step by step, let me go check and I'll post the link..was very clear in how to's...

Fostoria, OH(Zone 5a)

I have the directions but, as you know, I am not good at figuring things out from the directiions.

Are working directly on the template or on the cardstock that with the cut out?

Victoria Harbour, ON

on the cardstock you cut out..just a sec.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Janice if you go to this link and follow down, sometimes through chit/chat it's a very good description of what to do along with visuals..

Victoria Harbour, ON

Let me know if the link works or not..
I shouldn't be too far..going upstairs to make something to eat..will check in shortly

Victoria Harbour, ON

Janice just tested it and it works for me..

OK I've flour left, will try your cake Janice, not tonight but this weekend...

If you all start posting these great recipe's guess who will be bigger than a house..on my way there but oh/oh..

Anybody care to share their tortierre pie recipe..know I've my grandmothers and Rogers somewhere but where??

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Starzz,How neat!! How do you do that? Bev

Victoria Harbour, ON

OMG Carol..so lovely, remember the one you did last year for me...my bedroom all redone with your graphics..didn't I post it not long ago???

I know I've asked you a zillion times, but what program again do you use??? is it a download? take much memory? or is it a program you purchase...amazing..

Thank you, thank you.. instead of making iris folding cards I should just be playing with your program and make and print and send..lol

Are you getting the storm..

Sure wish tomorrow was a snow day!!!

Darlene just called, she isn't feeling well so cancelled painting for tomorrow so that means that I can leave this disaster room as is until tomorrow..

How much of your cake is left Carol, so laughing..June said she's only have a piece is I did...I'm off to freeze the other loaf before I get into mischief...

Do you freeze inside the glass tray or do you remove it..I sometimes don't have much luck with things that are just saran wrapped, seemed to get freezer burnt, any suggestions??

Victoria Harbour, ON

Bev, isn't she amazing..must go look for my bedroom photo that she added all the Christmas icons to..my cat had a hat! Carol, did you save it?

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Thanks Bev,

I saved Betty's photo to my computer..in My Pictures.
Then I open a photo program I have called Microsoft Picture It 2000 (an old one )
I then import Betty's photo, then I can put text on it..and do different edges and colours and so on.
Then I "save as" (new name)..and there I have it..
I make all the birthday cards for my family with this program.

This is one I made for Michael my grandson in October.

I'll have a look Betty..

Fostoria, OH(Zone 5a)

O.K. I'm getting it now, somewhat. You are working on what will be the back of the card. and the ribbon gets taped as you go.

You follow the sequence 1, one color, 2 next color, 3 last color, then repeat on 4,5,6. How do you decide how many colors to use?

Back to the drawing board and see if I can figure the rest of this out.

Sorry to be such a pain... takes me a while to catch on and, as I said, I need to see things done. Not good at reading and doing just from directions. That is why I take classes instead of just buying books to learn how to do something.

Fostoria, OH(Zone 5a)

No flour in the Dump Cake. You will use a box cake mix. Know you will love it, but be prepared, it does make a lot! Uses a 9x13 pan. I make it for pot lucks, family dinners, things where there are a lot of people to feed.

Glenview, IL

Oh...hehehhe Betty, a Snow day!!
Geesh, I am going to start a fire! Your window scene is lovely....
Can't believe you are having snow like that already!

Carol, you are such a sweet heart to creat a new card with Betty's scenery. I love it!

hahah, you all I've a tone of reading...oh, oh Steve's back so probably will be back later.

Had so much fun today but now I am tired, lol...

the recipes look awsom...

BE back in a bit.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Judy, was just talking to Diane and friend Carol in Barrie, no hydro, trees are too laden with snow, major blizzard..some roads are closed...

Usually on my workshop day with the girls at painting it's always a 'bllizzard' lets hope it got mixed up, is today and not Friday..

Victoria Harbour, ON

ooops missed Janice's post..

Janice not a problem, thought the directions might help you out better than my explaining it..bit tired tonight..but all my trees look pretty lol
