DAILY PICS VOL. 153

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Ooops! Got the tree wrong! :-( At least with it being a Red Maple, the risks of a lethal insect attack are rather lower.

Wonderful shots, everyone.

Nanny, the pic of the three birds at the water dish at the same time is just amazing. Lucky you.

Rose, as always, stunning pics. Love that cute little Junco.

Methodical, you're doing well with the new camera. . I've seen photos of Nuthatches in what is obviously typical pose, but I never knew they moved backwards.

Fantastic birds, GP. The Painted Buntings have colours similar to our (pesky) Rainbow Lorikeets. Wanna swap?

Several weeks ago I posted shots of Black Swans with five cygnets on the banks of the Swan River. They've really grown and all five have survived. Here's a shot from this afternoon.

Edited to change "perky" to "pesky"

GP, I love all your photos, but I must say that Mockingbird photo is just perfect. The blue sky, the perfect green branch and the detail on the bird combine to make the pic just wonderful.

Rose, your photos make me think that I can reach out and pet those birds. Lovely.

Evie, I just love Pileated Woodpeckers. I used to see them in my neighbor's oak tree until it died from a beetle infestation. It was a very old tree though and was probably near the end of its life. I miss the tree and the woodpeckers! I'm sure though that Pileated Woodpeckers are not always a death knell!

Methodical, love the nuthatch with the seed in its mouth! Fab shot. The bluebird is cute too.

Margaret, I'm so glad those baby swans are still going strong! In the last week, I've watched an injured Blue Jay, a one-legged Carolina Wren and now my male Cardinal's feathers look funny and he's acting funny. This world can be quite dangerous for our feathered friends.

Mrs. Ed, that Purple Finch shot is just beautiful. He's really colorful. I wish I'd see one!

Wilmar, AR(Zone 8a)

I couldn't get a picture but I saw my first Junco of the season this morning.

Here's another Whitebreasted Nuthatch

OMG, that's beautiful Methodical.
Mrs. Ed, I looked at that Purple Finch again and that really is a spectacular shot.

I'm going out of my mind. The yard is FULL of wonderful little birds. Some I recognize and some I don't. There is definitely the blue-headed vireo, the orange crowned warbler, a blue/gray gnatcatcher, and a yellow-rumped warbler, but the others, I can't tell without a picture. I can't take any pictures because it's just so dark out there.

I ran errands a bit ago and saw the most gorgeous red-tailed hawk at the top of a small tree on a dead branch. It would have been the perfect shot if there were any sun at all. On my way home, I checked to see if he was still there, and he was lower in the tree eating something. I about died. Sun, sun where are you?

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Hey Elphaba, get that guest room ready for me! WOWEE on all the birds you have. I would love to see that vireo.

Thanks about the Finch. They are so cute. I am enjoying taking pix. Now that all the leaves are off the trees I have some light!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Evie...you are so lucky to have the Pileated...I haven't seen or heard ours for a couple of weeks...I like that feeder with the cover!

Nanny, I crown you " Queen of Many Birds In One Pic"!!

Margaret...so glad the baby Swans are all doing well and what a cool pic of them!

Mrs. Ed...Love that shot of the Purple Finch, I haven't seen one yet this year!

Met..Fabulous pics!

Elphaba...Save a spot for me, I would love to see all those birds in your yard!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

I couldn't stand it. I finally tried to get some shots. It's too dark, but boy the birds are active. (BTW, my house is still a mess from Ike, so I should come stay with y'all!) This photo should be posted on the most disappointing thread or the bird ID thread since I don't know what it is, but what the heck. This is probably the best shot I'll get today.

This one was bigger than the other birds. Crown is brownish/yellow/green. The lower belly, undertail coverts and underside of tail are white. Dark gray/black wings with maybe two white wingbars.

Margaret, I can't believe all survived and are now so big!!

Mrs Ed that photo is stunning...and send one my way would ya!!

I went down to the lake today in search of new birds and got #97 today... The pics are atrocious but good enough to ID(thanks claypa!). This was the best one I think. Bufflehead Duck hanging out with American Coots. The Bufflehead is # 97.

Thanks everyone!

Nanny have been over here to do some goosenapping? This is a goose I shared an apple with at Herdsman's Lake a few days ago. You've got six weeks to find another three birds.

The Swans don't have too many predators. Foxes and humans and the major peril. It's funny to see them, because even though they're so big, they still make the little peeping sounds they did as young babies.

Methodical, that is a great shot of the Nuthatch.

What a sweet little Purple Finch, Mrs Ed.

Yep, domestic goose, derived from Greylag Goose . . . sorry, no, you can't count it ;-)
Quoting:
Offspring maybe??

Yep. "Canalag" goose, = Canada × Greylag hybrid.

Family pic...

Note the obesity problem the domestic goose has . . . that's a sure sign it is a farm bird ;-)

And this is Hairy Woodpecker on the same suet feeder.

Thumbnail by burn_2007

did you make that suet feeder burn? I wish I was creative...

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Yes I made that last year for peanuts but the size of the mesh was too big . I would have needed 1/4 inch instead of 1/2 inch. So now I use it for suet, and maybe use the other one for crabapples this winter.

Yep, the one scooting across flapping its wings. The brown one over to the left is probably (but not definitely) a female Lesser Scaup.

Pie-billed Grebe

LOL! A bird with a pie for a bill . . . there's a novel one!! ;-)
(it's PIED-billed . . . black-and-white bill ;-))

Any predictions for #99 and #100? If you get stuck, join some local birders group for a trip out, they should be able to find something!

Oh nanny, might 99 be the "possible" lesser scaup? This is so very fun watching you get to 100.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Can I count a possible lesser scaup?...am gonna look at my book and see what I think....

Ooops about the spelling on PIED!!! lol

Rose those pics are to die for!!

Man, I wish I could have gotten a better pic...I tried zooming in on that bird didn't help much... It for sure is another type of bird...Not a coot or grebe...Looks like a scaup to me, comparing with my book...I say Lesser Scaup too. Anyone else want to weigh in ..voice an opinion brfore I make that #99?

I keep hoping to add Golden -crowned Sparrow to my list Resin, or at least some type of new sparrow. But don't think it will happen. Water fowl are likely to finish out my list.

Thumbnail by nanny_56
Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Certainly one of the two scaups; Ring-necked Duck has a distinct shape which this doesn't have. Lesser Scaup is much the more likely of the two - Greater Scaup are (a) rarer in the USA, and (b) tend to stick much more to tidal waters on the coast (except perhaps the Great Lakes). Tough call from the photo, but I'd say the head looks a bit 'taller' with a slightly peaked top, which fits Lesser better; Greater Scaup has a broader, more smoothly rounded head.

Worth going back to try for a better view!
