Here is a Red-bellied Woodpecker.

I didn't have the perfect picture to start the thread, but I really tried! Took tons at Lake Sheldon and they were all just terrible, but I did like this one even though there's a stick in the way. Actually, there was a wall of vegetation between me and this bird. I was creeping around trying to find a hole big enough to take a picture. You can see that this heron is creeping around trying to find a hole so he can get a look at me.

I liked the fall colors reflected in the water. We don't have much of that around here, so when I first saw those red leaves, I thought that it was blood in the water. I was all aghast wondering what that Little Blue Heron was eating!

Elphaba, what a lovely start to the new thread. I can relate to your description of trying to find a hole in the vegetation to shoot through, whilst the bird is doing its darnedest to avoid scrutiny. Beautiful shot.

I hope I haven't posted this before. I took several shots at the time. It is a Magpie Lark with babies from about three weeks ago.

Margaret, The Magpie Lark is a beauty!

Desert Wheatear . . . a rarity here, from the deserts of central Asia, took the wrong route on migration, west instead of south. It was lucky to find a tiny piece of 'desert' on the coast. No interfering vegetation for this one!!

Resin you guy's in the UK seem to alot of birds that get off course, which is very interesting!

So I was just sitting here this morning, chatting away when suddenly THIS beauty swooped down. I'm glad to say that I had no casualties though. I had to lighten it a good deal to get detail.

I don't know the difference between Coopers and Sharp-shinned, so anyone chime in.

My guess is Sharp-shinned..I have trouble with those two.

Resin, it's so amazing that you not only saw the wheatear but got a picture of it and such a nice one! Congrats!

Pelle, 12 Blue Jays, WOW, they must look beautiful in a group like that. I only have two Blue Jays, but one has a big hole in its chest and is lame in one leg, so I may soon be down to one. The injured one is very photo shy. This is a pic of his friend.

My bad...THose are fabulous shots...you know I love hawks!! I wish mine would sit still for pics...

Oh really? Well I was reading about a difference in the tail, Cooper's more rounded and Sharpies more square, but I really can't tell from this.

I just visitied this site http://www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw/AboutBirdsandFeeding/accipiterIDtable.htm and think that my bird is a coopers because it was for sure Crow sized. In fact, there were 3 crows following it around.

Very good description on both hawk on that link. From their description both can have red eyes. The one in my book shows yellow eye for Sharp Shinned and Red eye for Cooper. So can't go with that. I guess size is the best indicator. And the white tip at the bottom is seems pretty wide. Still agree with Cooper but will wait and see what the expert says. LOL

Well the expert chimed in before my last post. Yay Cooper.

The weather here has been terrible for getting out and trying to get a decent pic! We need sun...whatever that is! LOL!

Very cold, dark and rainy here...very nasty. So only able ti take pics out the window today. A few visitors from today so far...Dark-eyed Junco which is actually a shot from yesterday, which works because all of the ones from today were not that good!

Doing my feeder watching today and saw something spotted in a dogwood. Turned out to be a partial albino robin. There were lots of robins in the dogwoods today, eating the berries.

First Pine Warbler returnee that I've spotted so far. Came around a corner and there he was at the suet.

Deb, that's a gorgeous shot and what a pretty warbler. I don't know how y'all manage with those wood feeders though. My squirrels would rip that apart in no time.
