Here is a Red-bellied Woodpecker.
DAILY PICS VOL. 153
I didn't have the perfect picture to start the thread, but I really tried! Took tons at Lake Sheldon and they were all just terrible, but I did like this one even though there's a stick in the way. Actually, there was a wall of vegetation between me and this bird. I was creeping around trying to find a hole big enough to take a picture. You can see that this heron is creeping around trying to find a hole so he can get a look at me.
I liked the fall colors reflected in the water. We don't have much of that around here, so when I first saw those red leaves, I thought that it was blood in the water. I was all aghast wondering what that Little Blue Heron was eating!
Elphaba, what a lovely start to the new thread. I can relate to your description of trying to find a hole in the vegetation to shoot through, whilst the bird is doing its darnedest to avoid scrutiny. Beautiful shot.
I hope I haven't posted this before. I took several shots at the time. It is a Magpie Lark with babies from about three weeks ago.
Nice pics Elphaba! Thanks for starting the new thread!
Margaret, The Magpie Lark is a beauty!
Thats very cool Resin!
Thanks Elpaba and your RBW is a nice opener! The heron shot is great to by the way!!
Nice one Margaret.
Resin you guy's in the UK seem to alot of birds that get off course, which is very interesting!
Very dark here today so not bird looking today I am afraid.
Very nice Mrs Ed! I just counted 12 Blue Jays in my yard. :-)
My guess is Sharp-shinned..I have trouble with those two.
Whatever it is, those shots are absolutely stunning Mrs. Ed. I love the purple finch and chickadee too!
Resin, it's so amazing that you not only saw the wheatear but got a picture of it and such a nice one! Congrats!
Margaret, what a fabulous nest! I don't think you posted it before, but if you did, it was worth another posting!
Pelle, 12 Blue Jays, WOW, they must look beautiful in a group like that. I only have two Blue Jays, but one has a big hole in its chest and is lame in one leg, so I may soon be down to one. The injured one is very photo shy. This is a pic of his friend.
My bad...THose are fabulous shots...you know I love hawks!! I wish mine would sit still for pics...
I'm guessing Cooper's Mrs -Ed, because of the red eye. ;)
Oh really? Well I was reading about a difference in the tail, Cooper's more rounded and Sharpies more square, but I really can't tell from this.
I just visitied this site http://www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw/AboutBirdsandFeeding/accipiterIDtable.htm and think that my bird is a coopers because it was for sure Crow sized. In fact, there were 3 crows following it around.
Resin you guy's in the UK seem to alot of birds that get off course, which is very interesting!
I guess as much as anything, people here take more interest in them ;-) (tho' plenty over your way do, too!)
it's so amazing that you not only saw the wheatear but got a picture of it and such a nice one!
It isn't all that good . . . you should see the pics the more pro photographers were getting! Take a look here: http://www.tomtamsbirdimages.co.uk/Pages,%20Birds/Desert%20Wheatear.htm
The bird was very tame, just ignoring the birders standing watching it, several times it came as close as 6 metres away as long as we stood fairly still. I suspect it may never have seen people before.
I don't know the difference between Coopers and Sharp-shinned, so anyone chime in
Cooper's for me too; note the fairly stout legs (not "sharp"!), and the outer tail feathers being shorter than the inner ones (all the same length on S-s).
Resin
Very good description on both hawk on that link. From their description both can have red eyes. The one in my book shows yellow eye for Sharp Shinned and Red eye for Cooper. So can't go with that. I guess size is the best indicator. And the white tip at the bottom is seems pretty wide. Still agree with Cooper but will wait and see what the expert says. LOL
Well the expert chimed in before my last post. Yay Cooper.
Very nice pics everyone and such a variety too from here in the states as well as the UK and Australia!
Thanks for the new thread Elphaba...I love that Little blue Heron and have never seen one!
Mrs. Ed...you are on a roll today and I'm jealous (of course)! That Cooper's is gorgeous!!
The weather here has been terrible for getting out and trying to get a decent pic! We need sun...whatever that is! LOL!
Love the cooper's pic.
Haven't seen my woodpecker's yet usually come for the suet when it gets colder.
Well I just knew I would be wrong on that hawk!! lol
Very cold, dark and rainy here...very nasty. So only able ti take pics out the window today. A few visitors from today so far...Dark-eyed Junco which is actually a shot from yesterday, which works because all of the ones from today were not that good!
Great pics everyone!!
Love seeing those hummers duc!
Thank goodness for a holiday so I can try to catch up!
2ndCDave: That Nov 1st shot of the Phoebe is outstanding! Not to mention the flying
Bluebird! Oh heck - all the blue birds!
Ducbucin: So many hummingbirds! Great shots of them, too.
Dellrose: Enjoyed seeing your Sapsuckers. We have a pair that have just returned to a big
Oak Tree that they seem to like best. Haven't been able to get a pic, yet.
Nanny: I'm envious of your Waxwings. I have still not seen any this season. And
you have Juncos too. Still waiting for them also.
Adel: Wonderful series of portraits on Nov. 2nd.
Margaret: The Rainbow Bee Eater! WOW!
Elphaba: Fab shot of the Little Blue Heron.
I had to go 3 threads back to catch up, so if I comment on everyone's great shots, this post will take up the rest
of this thread! LOL.
First Pine Warbler returnee that I've spotted so far. Came around a corner and there he was at the suet.
Deb
Deb, that's a gorgeous shot and what a pretty warbler. I don't know how y'all manage with those wood feeders though. My squirrels would rip that apart in no time.
Beclu, love that robin against that foliage. Lovely.
Duc, fabulous picture of those hummers.
Nanny, great shots for a rainy day!
Nice ones everyone! Love the Crows and Woodpeckers and Hummers!
Becky...cool pic of the Dogwood and Robin!
Deb...Very nice shot of the Palm Warbler...I've never seen one!
A few from today...even though the lighting is not too good!
Here is a Carolina Wren...there is a pair of them that come and pig out on meal worms!
