Hi, some of us "oldies" would like to share our seeds with those of you new to Daves. By new, we mean you joined in the last 8 months and are a paying member.
Here's the deal. Send me a SASBE (Self addressed, stamped bubble envelope) and we'll send you 10 packets of seeds. (Sometimes more, depends on our stash) That's all there is to it. Of course you'll need to let us know you are sending your envy. lol You will get a good variety of good seeds.
Send 3 stamps and a label with your name on it. Best thing to do is just send me an empty bubble envy with your label and stamps inside. I can use that same envy to send your seeds back. Saves that envy!!
Please make sure you put enough stamps on your envelope you send to me. I've just gotten some with postage due. Don't know why one is 84 cents and another is $1.00. Specially when same size envy. PO told me because they are from diff zones. An empty bubble envy is at least 84 cents, so gtwo stamps. If you are sending seeds, it's more of course. I always pay the extra but it does add up.
PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR D MAIL NAME WITH YOUR ENVY.
I am in the address exchange, so you know where to send the envy. If you can't find it, just d mail and I'll shoot it right to you. ^_^
Oldies! lol If you would like to donate seeds, it would be great.!! I know how much I loved it when I was new and someone sent me seeds to get me started. Now I want to pay it forward and maybe you would too.
For those of you who would like to help the newbies, but just don't have a lot of seed, if you would like to trade for seeds, that is great as well. Send seeds for the newbies and I will send you the same amount back
I hope ;to be able to get your seeds back the day after I get your envy, but if I'm waiting on seeds or something, I will let you know!! Right now, I don't see any problems. People are still generous here at Dave's. lol
If you will, please give me an idea of the kinds of seeds you can use and like. I'd hate to send stuff that needs shade if you have only sun, and vice versa. We all have our flower and plant personality, so let me know yours. Can't promise you will only get a certain type, but will sure try to get as close as I can.

Ok, In the first post LorrianeR said to say what kinds of seeds we need or could use so here goes...
If you guys have anything for shade, I have a shadey area out front that I can use them in, there are 3 HUGE live oak tree's that make the sun, at best, dappled. I havent done anything out there & to the left side of the area is a very ugly well pump I need to cover with a plant. (any suggestions?) We have to be able to get to the well pump for maintenace, but I dont want to leave it out like it is, ugly as sin.
Infact the whole area is pretty ugly right now but I plan to spruce it up with some planters & hanging baskets, as well as a little bistro set where we can sit on nice days & maybe have lunch or tea (or margarita's :) ),I know alot of people dont have shade gardens so they cant use the seeds that need shade, but I can so instead of wasting them on people that cant use them, I'd LOOOOOVE them for that area.
So, besides shade I would like night blooming plants, I find them so unique that I am going to start a moon garden on my patio in the backyard.
I also have a rose garden, & a container garden, was well as a fruit & vegetable garden that we are starting, oh & a herb garden.
I have plenty of flower seeds, but I would like edibles, herbs, veggies, fruits, also vines for a archway that I bought for $6 at a yard sale recently.
Also, where do I send seeds to for other newbies? I have doubles & triples of some kinds of seeds & I would like to share them, I remember what it was like when I was just starting out & had no plants or seeds to my name & some neighbors giving me dirty looks for my weedy ugly front yard, While I am still new to gardening & dont have much or anything fancy, I will spare what I can.
BUT!!! I will take anything, if I cant use them, then I can trade them for something that I can, & I am very thankful for what I do get, the only reason I wrote this is because LorraineR suggested we do so, & I dont want to come off as picky or stuck up, because Im not & like I said, I am very thankful.
Stephi

vines... vines you say Stephi..... I've got Morning Glories. *wink*
I just got morning glory seeds for my grandma recenly, they are already little plants, I got her all different colors, even some really pretty red ones & a few with mixed colors. she doesnt get out much so I planted them in a planter by a trellis infront of the window she looks out of during the day. I am hoping they will attract butterflies, bee's & humming birds for her to watch.
A few Christmas's ago we got her a puppy, a chihuahua, she named him Petey, thats her little buddy, when I cant go over he keeps her company, but I go over most days.
:( Even when I ask her to go places with me she says its to much of a hassle for her cause she doesnt get around well anymore (2 strokes & a heart attack later, she gets around just fine to me.) & I guess she has to much pride to let me push her in a wheel chair.
OH DUH! I just read the name, haha, YOU sent me those morning glory seeds, the pink & white ones I think.
I'm a newbie and if there are any seeds left I'd like some. I have mostly shaded areas, but some with very strong Texas afternoon sun. What a challenge, eh?
Envelope is on the way.
Thanks.
Sarah
>>OH DUH! I just read the name, haha, YOU sent me those morning glory seeds, the pink & white ones I think.
**chuckle chuckle** yeah -- that is why i said that.
well, at least today is gloomier, and should rain... that will give me time to go thru all my seed piles and get some out for this project.
What a wonderful guesture LorainneR! Big hug from me for doing this.
Hey guys. Plenty of seeds for you so send those envy's. Stephi, If you would like to send seeds, just send to me with your envy and I"ll get them out there.!!
This is so fun! Love it.
Thanks, Dalhia, I always said I wanted to pay back what other's did for me, and this is one way to do it. All of you guys that are sending seeds for the newbies are great. I love the peop[le on Dave's. !!! ^_^
Sarah, your yard is like mine. When some of the packages and things say full sun, they've never been in Texas full sun.!! lol So I know what you are up against. Will send things that have worked for me!!!
Stephi, will work on your shade garden!!
All of you who are sending seeds to help, if you have something in particular you want to go to a certain newbie, just put their name on the packet, and I'll see it gets in their envy. Just think of me as the "clearing house" LOL
Hi Lorraine,
You are such a sweetie!!
I should sit down and see what seeds I could send you for this project. But I make no promises!! I have some other irons in the fire just now! But I am one of those people who save seeds whether or not I have a place to plant them next year or not! or room for all of them! Is a habit from when I was a child. For example I have tons of various elegant double, fringed, etc. poppy seeds! I am considering selling some of them.
Will see what I end up doing with them!
I am sending off a sasbe to you. I have sun and shade and am most interested in herbs. I will enclose note to that effect so you do not have to keep crosschecking with the thread. That will be a hassle I am sure. You are such wonderful people here. A subscription to Dave was my b'day present last week from my daughter. She knew how much I used this site as a non paying member and how much I wanted to come up with the cash to join.
So, Willie, I see you belong in the seed anonymous club too, aye!!
I feel your seed pain. All my family and friends know if there is a seed somewhere, Lorraine's gonna grab it if possible. Sirens start going off, "Woman stealing seeds from front walkway at the police station" lol Sometimes I think that will happen! But it's so fun.!!!
My daughter is a police officer, can't you imagine her hearing that coming through on her raidio. She'd know just who it was!!!
And now I get to share.!!! When I first joined Dave's I had my little bag of marigold seeds, and people were so sweet to me. A lot of the "oldies" would trade with me just to help me get seeds. They didn't need "no" marigolds. I am still in amazement at how generous people here are.!!
Kathy, your daughter deserves something really nice. How sweet of her to notice. You didn't get the obligatory bottle of perfume you'll never use. lol Unless it is good ole "good soil" perfume.
I'll try as hard as I can to get you some things you want.!!
We share all of our plants. I hope to trade for something special soon for her. I cannot think of a better way to say thanks for the gift of Dave.
Can never go wrong with a plant.!!! But so many to choose from!
Yeah, I have been drooling for days over everything that I see. Needed to drape shower curtain over keyboard.
I'm going to be sending in a couple packets of Impatiens balfourii, which is good for shade. Those that wanted shade plants, check out the link below and see what you think:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/584/
Damp conditions for the balfourii sunnyg? It seems to me that they don't do dry well which is why I've never tried them. Very prettiful sigh.
I would love something for shade, but if it's unusual or knock-your-socks-off bright and needs sun, I would do a happy dance. And please don't anyone watch, it will be very silly.
Lorraine, I'm starting a butterfly garden for next year - it's full sun 18' x 18'.....about the only place I have full sun. The rest has part shade/full sun as I have trees on each side of the house. Not deep shade, just strategically placed so most things will get morning sun, high shade and then afternoon sun. We love anything that attracts butterflies and I collect red plants for the hummingbirds. :-) I say "we" as my 3 little girls are very much involved in the gardening. Any flower works for them, including dandelions. Hee hee. This was our first summer for gardening and they have announced that they want their own plants. Having fun! Thank you so much for orchestrating this for us newbies!
Hi guys! I didn't count the number of newbies, so don't know if I am in the top ten, but would love some seeds if there are any left. I'll even send some that I have collected, all of which are pretty common, but might be enjoyed by other newbies. Unlike many of you that have a lot of shade, I have a lot of sun and some partial shade, and a little bit of deep shade. I would like any open pollinated (hierloom) veggies and just about any kind of perrenial flowers and herbs, maybe a few annuals. I'll send the sasbe tomorrow along with some purple cone flower, rudbeckia hirta, purple fountain grass, moon vine, mountain laurel and rock rose and maybe some others that I can't remember right off hand. This is my first season to collect seeds so have been going "hog wild"! This is fun! Lorraine, I'll be d-mailing you for your address.
It’s so neat to see what others are interested in, and learn a little about their gardens :-).
Dahlia, hmmmm….I actually don’t know about super dry conditions with the balfourii. Mine hitchhiked in with some other plants, and they have been the best surprise in the garden this year. I remember how much I loved touching the ripe seedpods as a child, and I had fun trying to collect seed this summer as it sprayed all over. LOL. I had one plant that was in sun until early afternoon, and it grew huge and did amazingly well, but I think the soil stayed reasonably moist in that area. It might be worth a try?
Hello Lorraine.
What a wonderful thing to do for us newcomers! Perhaps if you do the same thing next year I will join you with my extra's if I have any.
I would love some seeds if you have any left.
Half my yard is very shaded and half is mostly sun. I love vegetable and herb gardening with strange and unusual plants. I also love flowers of all types and am currently searching for some sort of flowering vine that will climb up a 7ft diameter shade tree. Any seeds would be welcomed though. I will mail out my env. tomorrow.
Thanks in advance!
Carolyn
Me Too!! Thank you Just getting seeds in the mail is exciting for me.
Thanks sunnyg. I have officially entered 'impatiens balfourii' in my Book of Lists. (This is my way of pretending that I actually keep track of all the seed I have and try snort)
