My dad has a rose plant he really loves and is concrerned about it. He said it get a few less buds on it every year. He was wondering how to root it so he can still have the beautiful rose plant. He was told they do not produce that particular rose bush any more. It blossoms right up to the first snow fall. I guess it is a tea rose of some sort. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks, I do not do roses there isn't enough sun in my yard. I also have never used a hormone of any kind. Do not even know where to start with a rose bush, Thanks again, Ronna
How do you root a rose cutting??
Stick it in a sheltered spot, right in the ground, and put a mason canning jar over it. Put a rock on top of the jar to keep it from getting knocked over. Leave it alone and next spring you will/should have a new rose bush. If your winter is dry, water the soil around the jar, but don't remove it. Don't let the sun hit it EVER!
Kay
Will this method work when the ground freezes??
Thanks
Gary
As long as it is in a sheltered place - maybe mound some leaves over all but the bottom of the jar - I never had a problem with the cutting freezing. I always chose the south side of the house, right up next to the foundation.
What do you mean Kay do you actually move the whole rose bush? Or just a cutting? For the mason jar directions? Thanks for the response! I really appreciate it so does my dad :) Ronna
Thanks for the info and links. Got lots of old jars I pulled out of a dump pile in our woods...guess I'll be washing jars and taking cuttings soon!
Iknow this thread is kind of old but I am wondering the same as Gardenlady. Is it the whole bush or just a cutting?
Welcome aboard, Flowerfanatsy! You have D-Mail!
It's no problem posting to an old thread, if you still have a question or comment. I've seen new posts on threads that were months old with no activity. I am so glad you did, because I had already forgotten about wanting to try this method of propagating my roses.
I'm pretty sure Kay was meaning cuttings, because they would have to be small enough to fit under a mason jar.
You know I answered you dmail but didn't see where you were from. I have been to Caneyville. My ex brother-in-laws people were from Caneyville. When he and my sister were still married they took me and DH there. It is a place I could live for sure LOL.
I kind of figured thats what she meant but I have never had any luck doing them that way. I have a problem with roses any way and I put out 5 this year and hope I can do better than b4. I really don't know what I do to them but?
I've had good luck rooting cuttings (including roses) with something I was doing similar to this propagating system. http://www.jbest123.thegardenjournals.org/?p=70#comment-4 I was using small pots in the bottom box so I could keep 1/4" of water in there for bottom watering.
I just looked at the link you gave me . Some good ideas. Might try it and see if it works for me. I am not real good with plants period but I love them and am trying real hard to learn how tos'.
try this out. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/671310/
Cool!
I root mine in a mist box but you can root them in six packs filled with soilless mix. Keep the out of direct sunlight and mist them twice a day.
Just what is a soilless mix anyway? I seen several people talking about it.
Cowpea
Tell us about your mist box. Does It have a pump motor to boost the water pressure? Is it a closed system or does the excess water go in the ground.? Any other details would be appreciated.
Garyt
Looks like there are many ways to root a rose. That is encouraging. I am new at this, but I am currently rooting about 20 rose cuttings in a home made bubbler propagation box. I have had them going for about a month and so far so good. I don't have roots yet, but lots of large nubs on the stems. Hopefully, the roots will follow soon. The thing I like about this system is I can see what is going on and don't have to guess if the plant is rooting or not. I am going to attempt some hardwood cuttings in this unit this winter. These roses are from a rose garden in front of my offices with hundreds of roses. I just took cuttings of the ones I liked the most. I have had some problems with algae because of the clear tub allowing so much light in. I have just taken the cuttings out and rinsed them under a hard spray at the kitchen sink. It seems to keep it down for awhile. Perhaps it is slowing the rooting process, but it hasn't stopped it.
Soilless mix contains peat perlite and no soil.My mist box is in my greenhouse and is 12'X3'and is covered by plastic.I don't have a mister hooked up yet so I mist them twice a day with great success.I get about 90% rooting in summer and about 65% winter.
Well this is all greek to me. Thanks for all the chatter its really interesting to me. I had no idea there were so many ways to do cutting and propigations. Do the roses turn out exactley the same?? No difference? That is what my dad wants. The same rose plant color and all. thanks, you are all great! Ronna
I use a set up like Billg's but I use a simpler set up. I found it very useful for tropical seeds or any seeds that needs heat.
I simply use a clear plastic container filled a third with water and H2O2. Fish tank heater for temperature control and a plastic stand to keep seeds and seedlings out of the water. Can also be used for water plants that need to germinate in warm water.
End result is I can keep a very humid warm constant temp. H2O2 keeps mold etc from growing but you still need to change the water every once in a while. You also need to let in some fresh air every day.
Yes gardenlady123 they will the same. They are clones of the original rose.
I know I jump in and ask a lot of questions but some of this stuff is totally new to me so I just have to be nosey and ask or I won't know anything of what is what. Can one of you tell me just what a bubbler is and how it works, and what it takes to build one or buy?
Fish tank bubbler. It pumps air down a tube to be released in the water making bubbles.
Walmart or anywhere fish tank supplies are sold will have one.
Two parts, pump and some way to release the air into the water. You can buy a pump and just make your own tube.
I learned most of what I have replicated from others on this website. It has been a fun experience. I bough 2 tubs exactly alike so I could use one for the top and one for the bottom. If you look closely you will see I have a water bed heater under the tub which keeps the water temp constant at 70 degrees. I also have two 6 inch stones and 2 bubblers. I add h202 to stimulate roots and help keep down the algae. I have 4 florescent bulbs over the setup. I also add a few aspirins to stimulate roots. I leave the bubblers on all the time and run the lights on a timer 16 hours a day. I tried it without the top and the leaves dried out too much so run it with the top on and vented by propping it up on one side about an inch. I change the water every few weeks and sometimes have to run the cuttings under a strong spray to wash off algae buildup. Since I have so many roses and they all look the same I have had difficulty keeping track of what is what. I have put plastic labels around each one and they have come off in the wet environment. I would welcome any suggestions on how to keep them straight. I also created a grate to stick the stems through. I will show that in another post.
I had the same problem. Ended up using different colored plastic ties. I didn't have enough ties so I cut some in half and some left long. That works. They sell packs of different colored small ties at Lowes and HD. Probably you could find something like those at Micheals too. A little tricker if you just have a bunch of different seeds in there.
BTW I run at 80 degrees F for what I'm trying to do. Never had a problem with algae. Hmmm. I leave the cover on all the time tight and only open it once or twice a day to get new air in it. No bubbler. I also pull the germinate seeds or cutting out once they get going. That's all I use the hot box for. I don't know how much humidity I get in there but it must be close to 100% because i get condensation on the side and lid. I use a over head light on a timer as well.
I use a numbering system to keep track of my cuttings and seeds. I am up to about 114 just for this fall when I started the new system. I like the color tie suggestion, but will have to put the number on the tie somehow.
I think I will turn up my thermostat up on the water bed heater and see if that helps. Since I run the 2 six inch bubblers continuously, it creates a lot of moisture and the leaves are not just damp, but constantly wet which probably isn't good for them.
I have attached a picture of the grate I cut to insert in the tub. It holds the plants up and keeps the leaves out of the water. Hope this helps.
So if a person had an old fish tank they could even use that then? I know that it would have to be sterlized and all but it could be used. What do you use in the way of a grate or what ever to keep the plants directly out of the water. I mean I know I could come up with something but just interested in what others are using.
I haven't tried it, but some have been using some type of styrofoam board or the hard sheet insulation which would float on the water. The advantage is it will rise and fall with the water level. You just cut it out the size where it will fit inside and cut holes in it for the plants or some even put what they call net pots or small plastic cups with rock wool or some other inert substance to hold the cutting, then insert the cup in the floating platform.
You could put some hangers on the sides which would hold up the grate like I made. I would make what ever you decide low enough in the aquarium to allow for a top in either case. There is a lot of info on these type of set ups on this site, but takes a long time to read through all of it.
Yeah I know there is and when I run across one I try to keep it to where I can find it again so I can keep up on things. There are several of the forums I have went to and ask questions and I might get an answer and then again might not. I know I sound nosey to some that have a lot more experience than I do but I have to learn and sometimes asking questions is the only way. I have almost got to where I just read what info that is there and not ask anyone anything. I keep in contact by dmail with one or two ladies and they have helped me a lot with what they know.
Enogh of that!!!!
What did you use to make your grate from? I surely wasn't metal was it?
I use a stainless steel cookie cooling rack. LOL. Just happened to have it and it fit. I use plastic cups to keep it up out of the water. Like I said I use a simple set up.
I use a 70 quart clear plastic bin with top. Think it's 70?? Somewhere around that size.
Adjustable fish tank heater, suction cupped to the side.
6 to 8 inches of water with a bottle of H2O2
4 plastic cups and a stainless cooling rack
Desk lamp with timer
Everything sterile when I begin and water brought up to 80 degrees.
There you go, good for seedlings, cuttings or trying to force seedlings to grow fast.
Once or twice a day open the lid and fan a bit for some fresh air.
I haven't had any problems with fungus of any kind since it is almost a closed system. Works especially well for tropicals that require at least 75 or 80 to germinate.
Hope that helps.
Oh thank you so much ! I know I really sound dumb but I just haven't ever heard of some of these things and have no idea of where to look and go about setting it up. I do have some seed coming that needs the 75 to 83 temps and I had no idea of how I was going to accomplish it. Old type planter here just throw it in some dirt and hope for best LOL.
Another tip. Hard seeds need to be nicked and soaked to germinate. Something like a canna seed can go for years without germinating. Many tropicals are that way.
The ones I have coming I read about and printed it out too just so I would know what I had to do as they are tropical. I really screwed up the first I got cause I had no idea of how to germinate them. I just did them pretty much like regular seed and JUST DIDN'T WORK LOL ! So I went to hunting on how to do them.
I am not sure where best to post this, but will try here. I have been rooting several rose cuttings in a bubbler which I have pictured above in this post. Algae was starting to build up on the cuttings and a few days ago I changed the water and rinsed the algae off with a strong spray of water. I put them back in the water along with a bunch of cut up pieces of willow branches and some H202. Today the cuttings all have a very gooey clear substance on the ends of the cuttings where the nubs are starting to form. I will include a picture of the picture of the mature nubs here and a picture of what they look like with this new substance. I have no idea what is going on, but don't want to loose these cuttings. I don't know if the gooey stuff is a good thing or a bad thing. Can someone tell me what to do? This is a picture before.
Bill
In another post they used macuracomb brushed directly on the cutting. That is the stuff that is put on minor cuts. It stings but is a good disinfectant.
Garyt
I remember that stuff as pure torture. I didn't know it was still on the market. I will see what it does. I don't really know if this new development is a good thing or a bad thing. I have just never seen it before. I have been having some algae develop on the cuttings because there is so much light, but never this. I guess a better description is it is a jelly like substance. If macuracomb works, I wonder if h202 would work. I prefer it on my own cuts.
G'Day
I put a message about Mercurochrome on a different post but have been informed that it is no longer available in the US. Perhaps you could try the 2ml per ltr of Bentadine at that rate it shouldn't harm your cuttings and if that stuff is bacterial it would clean it up for you. It might also be worth while experimenting with Permanganate of Potash just enough to make the water very light pink. That works very well as a fungicide it is used as a foot bath to control Tinea (in people not plants) since that also worked very well it might be banned too.
