Daily Pics No. 148

PERTH, Australia

Well, No 147 whizzed by so quickly. We had some good laughs and saw some stunning photographs.

Migration has seen birds leaving certain areas and heading towards their wintering grounds.

Please feel free to post your bird pictures here. We'd love to see them. They don't have to be of National Geographic quality, it's to share with other bird lovers.

We came from here

Thanks Burn. Love your little Junco. Do they stick around for the winter?

Birding is slow here for now. All I saw today were bluebirds_

Very nice pics guys!

I agree...Beautiful start Margaret and very nice pics so far!! Thanks for the new thread!

Burn...Love the little Junco!

Frank...My yard is slow too, I have the Bluebirds but so far the Cards are missing! I see lots of them in the tree lines though!

I headed out to the brush piles yesterday and was so happy to find some of my winter friends...mostly Sparrows.

Here is a White Throated Sparrow.

Thank you Pelle. It was a piece of cake. Don't know what all the fuss is about. (I think I was about to have a heart attack).

Frank, your birds are absolutely adorable.

Thanks Iris.

This afternoon at the Osprey's nest, a Willie Wagtail was relentlessly attacking the male Osprey, trying to drive it out of its territory. Didn't matter to that little bird that the Osprey's have nested there for years. I took so many shots (I was a little bit excited), that I'll start a thread to show the drama with some sequential shots.

Rose, there was one of those "whilst you were typing" messages after I posted mine.  What utterly beautiful shots.  Would you send me a very big box of the White Crowned Sparrows - the ones that you saw eating the weed seeds.  Better make it two large boxes.

Here's another badly focused shot (I was shaking with excitement) from this afternoon.  The Willie Wagtail landed on the Osprey several times during the onslaught.

LOL, That's a good one Margaret!

Man, I'm jealous. All my birds are gone. I still have some House Finches but by the time I get home from work there are no birds, except the Morning Doves. I got a new camera and no birds - guess I'll have to maybe walk some trails. So next spring and summer I will cherish any and all birds that visit my backyard. Hopefully, I'll get a couple different varieties after I plant my new berry bushes and butterfly bushes.

oh, you just wait methodical, when less wild food is available, they will come!

Melbourne, FL

That is so funny, Margaret, the way the Osprey is totally ignoring the Wagtail. Great pics, it will be wonderful to see the babies grow up.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Gorgeous colours on the parrot Margaret! Is that it's nesting hole?
What a great capture of the Wille Wag, the Osprey seems oblivious to it's presence, lol.
Those Geese look huge close up burn!
F-chisolm, such a forlorn looking BB too!
Rose, very nice all of them!

Well would you believe it, when it was sunny I stood amongst my species dahlias (which are taller than me) to see if I could get a better shot at the birds on the peanuts. Had only been there a few seconds and in came the Nuthatch! The Blue Tits knew I was there, but my jumper had camouflage colours!

It's pupil also looks to slant towards the front, maybe birds which need forward vision all have that.

This was the last one I got as it was about to get a peanut, you can see the eyelid coming over from the back.

We have most of the usual fall birds here too. Still lots of bluebirds, thankfully. But here is another kind of blue bird I have been trying for weeks to sneak up on. This morning I managed this shot. I guess she was thirsty.

This is the male. He was here for a drink just before the female showed up.

The male Blue Jay does look like the Blue Tit! (crossed BJ as was mentioned in last thread!)

Stafford County, VA

Usually we see the house finches following the bluebirds around. The past few days it has been this chipping sparrow.

Okay, I'll ask¬… How do you know the difference between the male and female Bluejays?

Stafford County, VA

I just guessed, based on the fact that the first one to come to get a drink was a little bit bigger and the second one waited until he left before she came for a drink.. Also, she seems to have a lot of fluffy feathers around her bottom. But I am just guessing

.But I am probably wrong.

Well that's a good thought. I've never known how to tell.

Marlton, NJ

Great pics Dave!

BTW, the sexes look the same in Blue Jays.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Male housefinch. Every time I see one of these that looks a lot more red than normal, I pick up the camera to snap off a photo. Mostly I'm wondering where the male purple finches are. I read that a way to distinguish the purple finch from the house finch is that the HF's beak curves down. I guess I am on "beak" patrol!

Thumbnail by Mrs_Ed
South Hamilton, MA

Not sure, I think the purple finches are chunkier (my word) & seem to have darker markings. Will have to look at the beaks through the field glasses.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Yes, i think there are several different traits, I've seen that they sometimes look more crested. There are a couple of sites out there that show the two side by side for comparison.

All I know is that I have two female and wondering where the males are.
