What weird weather we're having #4

Eugene, OR

I'm going to be laughing for a looooong time!!!!! Good Luck and stay away from those horns. ROTFLOL

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I'll try, that thing comes outta no where sometimes! At least if your trick or treaters have horns (antlers), they'll usually back off.

There were four of them again. They cleaned up the wormy apples I left for them and took a few more from the tree.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Well, it's good that they clean up your apples for you. Mine eat the hostas, dogwoods, maples, hydrangeas, camellias, etc., etc.,

Eugene, OR

Two of them are really skittish, they take off quick if they see us. The other two like apples too much I guess, they look to see what we're going to do, then go back to eating.

Eugene, OR

They've never touched my hosta bed or the dogwood right across from the apple tree or the hydrangea either now that I think of it. There's two bushes (I forget what) with white flowers, they like them better than apples, but the flowers are all gone now.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

The sad part about that goat, other than it charges people, is that it's eating here whole yard. I helped her plant a dogwood and weeping cherry last year and sure enough it has eaten those back to nearly nothing. It startet to chew on her barberry bush and I laughed in guessing of the outcome. Sure enough it jerked it's head back and snorted after only a bite or two off of that plant.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Well, hopefully your dear will leave them alone for you! My experience with them is that over time the same ones come back year after year and explore your yard more every year. Mine eat anything.

Eugene, OR

At least there'll be one plant left when they get home. My youngest has a small goat to calm his horses, I'll have to find out what kind of mischief they've had to deal with.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

What a cute picture of the three of them together. Bless you for taking care of them, though it sounds like a bit of a challenge. A goat that likes to hang with the dogs - very Disneyesque. If only we could hear what they were saying.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

well, if i'm there with all three of them.... odds are good that anything being said isn't Disneyesque! They are cute together. The only goats that i've ever been around have been nice, so this one was a real shock for me!

It sounds like this guy doesn't know he's a goat!! I've never seen a goat that hung out with the dogs. So is he nice to your friend? Maybe he's a guard goat.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Friends of ours had a goat once. It got along great with the dog and the cat. Loved to get inside when they had fire in the fireplace....he would stand on the edge of the hearth and lean against the fireplace until you could smell the hair start to singe!!!! No fire, it would curl up in her DH's favorite chair just like one of the dogs! He was fine with people as long as you didn't turn your back to him........

Eugene, OR

He looks grumpy. I keep getting this mental picture of rc running around the yard with the goat right behind her!!! One of my kids got chased by one in a petting zoo, it was awful.

Where are you doing your animal sitting redchic? Didn't see the forecast tonight, isn't supposed to rain for the next week? That can't be fun with the animals. But then it was supposed to rain today and didn't really. I like it when it rains at night and stays dry during the day.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I have no idea if this goat is nice to the gal that i'm watching the animals for. She just left a note saying "oh and by the way, there's a goat around here that I'm taking care of for a few months for someone. It's pretty self sufficient." However, that will be one of the first things that I ask when she gets back! I actually think it's somewhat entertaining now that I've figured out how to deal with it!!

Sally your vision is about right on with the first time I encountered this goat (keep in mind, in the past all goats that I've known have been friendly). So, when I drive up and get out I see the dogs and think.... 1,2, and what???? Is that a ....hmmm.... goat.? So then I take the picture. Then call the dogs over to greet them and the goat comes right along with them and gets right beside me as the dogs do. So, i thought to myself 'Well, it came right up to me as if it gets along with people and just as the dogs to get petted. hmmm...... must be ok.' So, I pet it just a little and it head butts my leg (not hard, cause he's only a foot away), steps back several feet, swings it's head around, and puts its' head down so that it's horns are towards me now. I didn't wait to make sure it was going to actually try it. I just took off towards the house. The dogs thought that it was a game and were right behind me, which was a good thing. I grabbed the first stick I saw and made the dogs do an about face to get it, right towards the goat. The goat got held up in their stick finding game. If the goat and I aren't close, it will keep it's distance. However, even if it wonders towards me and then realizes that I'm near, that's different. However, the stick trick with the dogs works wonderfully!

I'm house sitting up at High Praire. The dogs (and I guess the goat too) have a small shed that they go to if they want to, but they usually prefer to get muddy. They're really easy to clean off though. I'm not touching that goat! I suppose if it gets covered in pitch, I'll turn the hose on with a sprayer at the end and spray from at least 75' away.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

ZM, I definitely wish that this goat were more like the one that you knew!

Sally, so did you get all of your construction projects done? You must be very close!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Reading the goat capers makes me feel like a dumb city slicker - I know nothing about goats and such! It all seems very exotic to me.
I had a lot of trick-or-treaters last night. So many that I finally just sat on the porch with the candy. Most were little kids and all was quiet after 9 pm. I carved jack-o-lanterns for the first time in years, put candles in them and put them on the porch. The light rain had stopped in the morning and it was a nice evening.
I woke up early this morning and turned on CNN. I will be so glad when this election is over and we can go back to thinking about important things, like what vegetables to plant in the spring!
I'm not sure about starting a thread about the house renovation - since I'm an architect it can be considered "advertising" and I don't want to go there. Some of the rules are crazy.
It is pretty gray here today and a perfect day to make soup.
Red be careful with that goat. Maybe he likes you and that's how he shows it!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

She may shoot me later but would you like to see one of my favorite trick or treat visitors??? (it's Laura)

Love the costume! She looks so beautiful.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

She put a lot of time in on it...I think she did a great job...she didn't have the mask with her, maybe she will post one with the mask later.....it was a great outfit!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

That looks great!!!! Very leaf-like.

The bank said the temp was 76 a little bit ago. Yikes, I'm sweatin!!

Redchic if you follow Hawthorne east (there is a tiny jog in the street) you will be at Mt Tabor Park, which I think is the the hill you are thinking of. The view to the west looks over the city to the hills beyond. Mt Tabor if full of very old growth conifers and gets a lot of snow in the winter. It's a favorite place for walking since you can get an uphill workout if you choose to. It's beautiful and peaceful.
In the northern part of Italy there is a place called Cassera Razza where goatherds stay all summer with their goats. They sleep in little huts and cook over open fires and the bathroom facilities are nonexistant. It is in the Dolomite mountains which have snow 12 months of the year. In the winter they bring the goats to lower altitude. So if you decide you like goats a whole lot it is quite lovely with astounding views.

Eugene, OR

Goatherds in Italy, that sounds so picturesque. Like an old movie. It would surely be beautiful.

rc...got most of the heavy stuff done, we're going to replace some boards on the small back deck (we can cut off the bad part of some of the front deck boards). But it'll have to be when the weather permits. Right now I'm still putting things on the front deck and raking leaves. Arghhhhh! I love my trees, but sometimes it seems they can't possibly have that many leaves. Too bad that goat isn't the friendly variety, that would be much more fun. Just never turn your back on it.

Nice costume!!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Nice costume, You all get to much ahead of me LOL know very little of Oregon, just some of the Coos Bay area.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Portland, I'm pretty positive that the area that I'm thinking of is Mt. Tabor Park. I'm really glad that my memory is not completely out of whack. Well.... at least most of the time. Your neighborhood has a lot of personality and culture. I think that the Dolomite mountains sound absolutely beautiful! I would love to visit and hike around there sometime, but without the mean pet goat!

Sally, I'm glad that you have the majority of it done. It must be nice to stand there, admire it for a minute or two, and take it all in. It won't be long before it's done. Tonight that silly goat was sitting right in front of the container that holds the dogs food in it. After much talking it still refused to leave there. Right by me was one of those extra large, heavy duty, Rubbermaid, garbage cans. I took the lid off of that and held it in front of me while I walked up to the dogs' food. I figured that if if charged at me that it would have that garbage lid stuck on it's horns after that and it would make things easier for the next few days. That would be nice! Once I was right next to it, it stood up as if to hold it's ground and I reached into the dog food bin real quick and threw food at it. Problem solved. It was distracted long enough by that to allow me to get the dogs fed.

I completely agree with you about the leaves. And I see no sense in raking before they've all come down and it has always rained before their completly off the trees. Messy!

Tilly, You're doing great to know Coos Bay. If you we're talking about Washington, i'd be just as lost. I know the two towns that my relatives live in and that's it. Then if Sofer were to chime in about Montana, I'd probably have to dig out an atlas.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Red, if you where closer I would give you a kiss, thank you for telling me the trick with the ctrl & alt. I got my video back. firefox would not let me download it after I somehow lost it. Happy Happy.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

My DH's sister lives there.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I'm soooooo glad that worked for you Tilly! Happy to help anytime, kiss or no kiss. I was meaning to ask you how the rest of the picasa and computer stuff was going for you.

Weather today, about 60 deg. and rained this morning. Tried to rain all afternoon, but didn't. It made for a pretty nice day out, even though it was grey.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Coos Bay is a nice town. I've not been there very much, but it's generally quiet and usually pretty friendly.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Jan, your weather sounds good to me. I just checked out Sally and I's 10 day forecast. the average high temp. over the 10 days is 54.5 and the % of rain ranges from 40-80%. Not a single day is supposed to be dry. Hmmm....we need it. And, that's really not cold. But, 76 sure sounds good. It Also sounds as if the "weird weather thread" fits you as well!

WoW, do not want to mess with her, she'll turn me into a frog. LOL
Really great costume.

Red have not had time to play with it as yet been a real tough week, as always for me. LOL
But so glad to have flash player back, I mistakenly erased it, and my firefox would not let me down load it. All is well now.

Is everyone ready for the contest? starts in AM. then the headache of voting.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

That's a really fun costume!

Tilly, i'm glad that you got your flash player back. The rest will be there when you have a chance to get at it. Hopefully this week goes a little better for you.

You have got to check out this flower!!! Is this not the smallest fully grown dahlia flower that you've seen? It was growing in with the rest of the standard sized flowers.

gnome flowers!!LOL I get Lingernot in about 6 weeks I think. He'll probably need long johns by then.

Hello Sassy.

As usual I got the rain later. Had a chance to pick up and empty 4 more barrels worth. Our compost heap is starting to get muddy, they've been at it with the tractor lately, so it's cleaned up for winter. Left lots of room for pruning refuse and leaves. It was pretty warm today (for November), easier to rake.

Yes, one of these days I'll get everything done and be able to enjoy it more. Have to go see our friend in assisted living tomorrow, he's out of his indigestion pills. And DH has a doctor's appt., so we'll probably spend most of the day in town. Then I have an orchid meeting later. Busy day again.
